MiloMorai Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 Actually, only one of the three tiny islands which comprised the Volcano's was suitable for airfields. As the name implies, the group is of volcanic origin and each island is covered with sulphuric ash. The composition of the Volcano's is such that two of them are named North Sulphur Island and South Sulphur Island. The one in the middle is simply Sulphur Island—Iwo Jima in Japanese. http://www.506thfightergroup.org/mustangsofiwo.asp 1
Dakpilot Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 (edited) Great article, thanks for posting Gives some nice insight into what 1500 mile operations required Can only imagine what it must have required in a single engine aircraft, having done a number of 8-11 hour 'missions' myself but this in multi engine and multi crew piston aircraft which is an altogether different proposition with more sophisticated Nav equipment Recommended read ** Check the links at bottom of page more more info Cheers Dakpilot Edited October 10, 2016 by Dakpilot
