LLv34_Flanker Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 S! AS can not post this on the official screenshot thread I do post here. Yes, I play War Thunder and more specifically Ground Forces in Realistic Battles. Planes are a nice addition to fly around and die in when you lost your tank, have even shot down a few planes and bombed tanks. But here goes the pic, quite cold feel in that one I think
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 That looks very, very frosty. Nice shot, Flanker. WT does have some very nice visuals
LLv24_Zami Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Looks nice! I`ve never tried War Thunder but now I got curious. Might give a shot for a tanks.
LLv34_Flanker Posted October 6, 2016 Author Posted October 6, 2016 (edited) S! Thanks for the comments. I won't go into comparison between WT and others. All of them have their good and not so good features. I play WT for the tanks as I am missing the controllers still Here a few more from last night.. Edited October 6, 2016 by LLv34_Flanker
kestrel79 Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I don't mind WT either, I enjoy playing tanks as well. But yeah in sim mode is where it's most fun, but I do play RB tanks if I don't have the proper vehicle purchased for the sim scenario that is running. Anyone who plays feel free to add me, should be Kestrel79. Would be nice to play with some fellow simmers. Usually play weeknights late after 10pm US Central time.
Dutchvdm Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 It looks very nice. I see that they even have modeled cockpits . Every Youtube WT player uses the 3rd person view. Why?..... Grt M
LLv34_Flanker Posted October 6, 2016 Author Posted October 6, 2016 S! They use 3rd person because you see more that way and easier to aim with mouse control. Or that is how I see it. I run the game maxed out except GRASS is off. Nobody uses it so why hamper your vision with it...I know it is gamey but..
Finkeren Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 If only they'd make real historical scenarios with accurate plane sets, I might actually enjoy it. 2
SCG_Space_Ghost Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I get the impression that I'm the only person who doesn't think WT looks that great. 3
1CGS LukeFF Posted October 7, 2016 1CGS Posted October 7, 2016 I get the impression that I'm the only person who doesn't think WT looks that great. You aren't the only one. 1
Dakpilot Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 How big are WT maps in comparison to BoS/BoM/BoK ? Cheers Dakpilot
Finkeren Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 I get the impression that I'm the only person who doesn't think WT looks that great. The landscapes and some of the lighting effects in WT are beautifully rendered. The plane models are so-so (some are better than others) and the cockpits are horrendous. It does look good for an arcade game with relatively low system requirements though. How big are WT maps in comparison to BoS/BoM/BoK ? Cheers Dakpilot Tiny, but very detailed. They are big enough for tank action. Ridiculously small for air combat.
LLv24_Zami Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 I tried few tank battles first in arcade and then in realistic matches in couple of nights. Graphics are good imo and it's pretty easy to jump aboard and start shooting. So I can see why it's so popular. Not bad experience at all, I probably will play tanks there in future at least occasionally. Tanks can be quite fun. No need to compare to BoS, they are in different league.
coconut Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 I think the terrain looks great. The static clouds texture in the skybox, on the other hand, are really amateurish. I don't remember those looking so bad a few years back, I wonder what they did there to mess them up. The quality of rendering in BOS shows great techniques, but there's always a couple details that really stick out IMHO. Terrain shimmering, texture details, object and tree rendering distances, aliasing effects in volumetric clouds, grass distance... Of course, I see all those things because I spend all my gaming time there. I'd probably start noticing issues in WT too if I spent as much time there.
Guest deleted@30725 Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 While war thunder is a fun little game, what kills it is the stock plane syndrome after a few levels where unlocking your planes performance becomes a nightmare and a real disadvantage to others who have their parts unlocked. The pits in war thunder look rubbish imo compared to il2 or dcs and still no bomber pits after all this time. Lets not forget about the players, that snow shot with the swearing chat is a pretty normal thing to have to read so I would always turn it off. The tanks were fun. I always had all the graphics up even grass for the fun of the skill. They used to have a proper sim mode, but they deleted it from quick play options which worked great for tanks. However, the earnings for your tank soon run dry the higher levels. Last time I checked I had two tanks unlocked and unable to reliably keep making money to buy new ones. I think it was the last tiger variants so I gave up on it since I was aiming for the leopard. I spent my money going to tank fest instead that year. There are a lot of varied maps in war thunder. The newer desert one was pretty awesome for tanking on. The graphics are pretty good and the tank damage model is interesting. They've certainly got a lot of stuff in their game. Whether you'll live long enough to use much of it is another matter.
Picchio Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 The terrain's shading looks a bit exaggerated. Unless someone's been digging holes all over it. I like those tree shadows though. And BoS/M's landscapes would really benefit from those... I've been bitching about this over and over with no results yet, but who knows, DX11 might come with a few surprises...
Finkeren Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 Well they did say, that DX11 would make better shadows posible. Whether that just means less jagged shadows in cockpit or entirely new shadows or ??? remains to be seen.
LLv34_Flanker Posted October 8, 2016 Author Posted October 8, 2016 S! In WT there is NO terrain shimmering whatsoever, draw distance is longer and with everything maxed out, except grass off for sighting reasons, the FPS is rock solid NEVER dipping below 60fps Vsync'd. Not even when the screen is full of action like AAA, artillery barrages etc. Have to give them credit on the game engine being very light. One can argue about the cockpits but I like the pilot being there. WT is fun for me because the tanks, not the flying part except bombing someone For the more simulator feel I go for IL-2 and DCS series. As I said before all the games have their good and not so good features, but they still offer fun nonetheless.
Dakpilot Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 A lot about WT graphics are impressive, give credit where credit is due, but create that with similar FM and Maps of the same size of BoS, then I will be impressed ... otherwise it is all apples and kiwi fruit Cheers Dakpilot
LLv24_Zami Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 Btw, has anyone tried World of Tanks? If so, how would you compare the tank part of it to the War Thunder tanks? Planes in these games don't interest me, that's why I own BoS
Feathered_IV Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 If only they'd make real historical scenarios with accurate plane sets, I might actually enjoy it. Me too. War Thunder's current style of gameplay is a distillation of everything I dislike in flight sims.
Finkeren Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 Btw, has anyone tried World of Tanks? If so, how would you compare the tank part of it to the War Thunder tanks? Planes in these games don't interest me, that's why I own BoS WoT being tank-centric makes the tank action more enjoyable IMHO, but really any criticism you could have against WT applies to WoT too. It's pretty much a heavily imbalanced "Counter Strike with tanks" and just like WT you eventually reach that point, where the grinding becomes unbearable, unless you're willing to cough up real life money.
Lusekofte Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 My problem is the 3rd person view in battles, I hate to use it and I know my opponents do. That is why I only flown it a couple of times. I waist my time on DCS and BOS rather than WT. But the pits are good and models too. Just do not like the way it plays out. But then again I dont in BOS either
LLv34_Flanker Posted October 15, 2016 Author Posted October 15, 2016 S! Have had some fun in this little rascal, the I-153 Chaika Shot down a few planes with it and rockets have made short work of SPAA.
LLv34_Flanker Posted October 16, 2016 Author Posted October 16, 2016 S! Some more. Just for the fun and all, do not take it seriously Another plane I find somehow cute
Feathered_IV Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Man, if they just sold some old style il-2 singleplayer gameplay I'd be all over it.
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 They have campaign for Pacific - American and Japanese. They have great cutscenes which use a compilation of original footage, some of which I havent seen before. But the actual missions were rather simple and Ai is very unpleasent in form of damge models. They simply take hundreds of hits before going down which kills all combat experience. Here you can take a look: https://youtu.be/UnBBTNAwjME?t=1m15s Wt can look great and most importantly, for this look there is little price in terms of performance. FPS there is very good even on older rigs. But yes, some of the effects are overdone though this can be tuned with SweetFx.
LLv34_Flanker Posted October 17, 2016 Author Posted October 17, 2016 S! Have to say I am having fun with WT regardless it being arcadey or whatever. It runs silky smooth maxed out and getting into action is fast. I play tanks in RB and if have enough spawn points just grab a plane to fly around..and die in :D Can't wait to get the Typhoon Mk.Ib into action! The planes do not fly on rails and noticed a small thing when taking off in that BB-1. When took gear and take-off flaps in the plane sunk a bit as lift decreased. So can't do that too soon after lifting off Anyways. The game is fun and I take it as that. And suits my playing now as I am still missing flight controllers
LLv34_Flanker Posted October 18, 2016 Author Posted October 18, 2016 S! Took the Ju87B-2 for a spin over Stalingrad.
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 Nice shots, although AA and cloud flickering is a major pain in WT. Btw there is a button to take screenshots with hidden interface in WT controll options.
Trooper117 Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 I still go back to WT from time to time... play on tanks and aircraft. It's not difficult, you generally get into action pretty quick. The graphics are pretty damn good... If we had them for the old IL2 we would have been over the moon that's for sure. I only go on the simulator battles, which it has to be said are far better than the other modes, although nothing like we have in BoS. Still it is what it is, it has it's faults, and it can be frustrating at times, but it is pretty good FUN!
LLv34_Flanker Posted October 19, 2016 Author Posted October 19, 2016 S! As Trooper said. I am there for the fun as well. And the game itself runs silky smooth even the screen is choked with action. I play RB in tanks and fly planes if enough SP left. Good to have options, for both casual and more simulation oriented stuff.

Guest deleted@30725 Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 Ok game, ruined by f2p and unlocks.
JG4_Sputnik Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 I don't like the game. But if you have VR I recommend downloading it - you can spend hours just sitting in the different planes and feel the cockpit.
II./JG77_Manu* Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 Arcadey? No way, Sir!! A weird paintjob doesn't make a game arcadey. While very unlikely, it's well (physically) possible that this could be done IRL as well. By that picture you really can't tell anything about grade of arcade/simulation
