RedEagle Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 I want to get back into IL-2, the last one I played being Cliffs of Dover a few years back. Should I just wait for the Battle of Kuban to be released? Or should I pick up Moscow or Stalingrad? $50 each is pretty steep, so I rather just spend $70 once and get the spitfire. Also can someone explain to me how multiplayer works? If I do buy Battle of Kuban, does that mean I will only be able to fly with those who have Kuban, or can I fly with people with other versions of the game? Does one version/theatre have a bigger player base? Cheers.
LLv34_Temuri Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 For support, I recommend buying them all You can fly with the planes that are included in the version you buy. No restrictions on which version/servers/maps/people you can fly with. But, if mission maker hasn't placed the planes you "own" to the mission, you can't fly.
Neil Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 (edited) Hi RedEagle and WELCOME! You will find answer here: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/25425-bos-vs-bom-vs-bok-beginner/ For the multi: good news: all players have access to all maps, but they will have access to planes regarding what they own. so you will be with all players. BOK is not released yet. you have to choose between BOS and/or BOM and eventually the collector planes. If you can , buy them all to support the great team. They really worth the money spent! TheNotoriousFNG Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 To echo what Nil was saying, I would certainly suggest picking up all of the titles - it's worth it, many hours of entertainment. If you're wondering which to jump in with, that's up to personal preference on which aircraft appeals to you the most. I don't regret my purchase whatsoever, so I'd definitely say dive on in and welcome to the club!
Gambit21 Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 Pick them all up, worth it for all the planes and maps. That said if you had to choose just one right now I'd go with Moscow...but get them all.
Cpt_Cool Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 Seeing how you are saying $50 is steep (I know what you mean and all these "just buy everything" replies sort of miss that point) I would suggest to go for BoS. The aircraft in that set are all competitive (unlike some really fun, but outdated planes in BoM), and if you enjoy it as much as the rest of us do, you can better gauge weather you want to save up and shell out for everything, or buy just the spit later as a collector plane, especially since waiting for the full BoK release, or even just the Spit on early access might take a while. 1
simplyjames Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 I recommend picking up BoS then waiting on a sale for the others (premium planes included.)
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 Your choice: BOK - buy now, fly later BOS or BOM - buy now, fly now All are worth it. 1
Mesha44 Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 The best bet is to pick whichever of Bos or BoM has the most interesting plane set for you. Start with that and buy whatever you think is interesting. For now the Yak-1b and Ju-52 are pre orders and at discounted prices.
ShamrockOneFive Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Jumping in is a bit daunting but I'd suggest maybe adding on as you go and picking up what interests you the most. If you want to fly right now... I'd echo what some of the other guys have said and pick up Stalingrad. Or wait for a sale and then pick up Stalingrad. This gives you the best way to get accustomed to the game and in rolling with the basics. From there you can get Kuban when you're ready. As there is a lot of crossover between Kuban and Stalingrad you'll get a fuller multiplayer experience. That said... Moscow is pretty great and there are some planes there (I'm thinking the Ju88A-4 and the MiG-3) that will make appearances in Kuban too. Kind of depends on what you want and when you want it. $50ish is not too bad entertainment value if you end up flying for hundreds of hours like most of us do. Buying everything all at once is an expensive proposition but you can add on slowly and plan your purchases so it doesn't cost too much.

Thanks for the honest answer, I think I'll get Stalingrad. I will admit when I made this post I misread the release date of BOK (thought it was coming out this December, not just entering early access).
TP_Silk Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 (edited) Be prepared for the game to be a wonderful money-sink. Once it gets its hooks into you you'll find your self wanting...... a better PC ... a better graphics card ... a better joystick ... pedals - must have pedals instead of twisty grip ... more planes. Go on, just one more! Pretty please? ... another expansion ... goddamit, now I need a better PC again Edited October 7, 2016 by Silk
Guest deleted@30725 Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 (edited) First things first. Turn off your local radio station. It probably plays stuff like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdttqKok4gw Browse il2sturmovik.com to decide what planes you might like while relaxing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FohIvmqsazU Go to youtube to find some cool videos of the game: https://youtu.be/vEHSEaHwPTM https://youtu.be/gBa31SdxMrk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq66zJ9k82A Now, during your purchase decision you might need a little inspiration to press that pay button. Play this and watch your money gracefully flow from your bank account. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-Dh3ftkRAs Purchase complete, while waiting for the download to complete listen to this as your imagination flows for what fights lay ahead and what epic stories may unfold within the virtual land. Getting up and pretending to be a plane infront of the pc is probably not advisable however epic you now feel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASj81daun5Q Now, in the game you can take in the beauty of the artistry and the feel of the planes as you tear through the sky with the engine blaring in your ears, the immersion taking you into a time in ww2. Your virtual pilot senses may even tingle with a little excitement as you start to engage wondering what the outcome will be with only your skill and patience to help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KeLOgPsxkA Now, brimming with confidence you load an online match. Bullets fly from every direction, every plane seems to be on your tail. Virtual life is over in a flash: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eD0XEH3qVCk But there is hope, you will get better and you will find it easier with a little practice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QapfKSeiQrA Whatever you decide. Good luck and have fun with it. Edited October 7, 2016 by deleted@30725
