=WH=PangolinWranglin Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 (edited) Maybe it's just me or maybe I don't know how to fly but 110s are just mystifyingly hard to fight for me. I can barely outspeed them and I can barely out maneuver the things. Is this how they really were because by all accounts I read of them they were poor performers at most jobs they did. (aside from night fighting and ground attack)If anyone has tips they would be much appreciated. I just re-did my personal Yak1 skin and I don't want the paint scratched. ShamrockOneFive Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 I can't say I really have trouble with 110s. In a Yak-1 you are faster, turn better, climb better, and are generally more agile and have more options. If they are behind you then a hard turn and a high overhead yo-yo is probably a good move that they really can't follow terribly well. A sustained turn and you'll have them in a couple of rotations. But look out for that firepower :D 1
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 When they work in teams, Bf-110's become pretty dangerous. Above anything, they are good at flat turns, so if that's what you're trying to pull on them you won't have much of an edge. Their firepower also means that they only need one good firing window to shoot you down. Then there is the other side of the coin: the Bf-110 is utterly useless at climbing and rolling. Think long term when fighting a Bf-110 - trying to pull Gs to line up the perfect shot won't do you good because they can play along and while you get closer there will be a jolly gunner firing at you. Instead, play on those weaknesses it has. For example, assume a flat chase where Bf-110 is behind you and close to killing you. If you just pitch the nose up, it will probably stay with you and shoot you down. If you enter a turn to either side, it will probably keep up albeit struggling with the initial roll, and then get a shot at you. But there is a way out. If you start a chandelle (climbing turn) to either side, they will initially keep up with you, but if you abruptly reverse the chandelle's direction halfway through, the Bf-110 will not be able to keep up with the manoeuvre. In this situation, you will be going one way, gaining altitude. The Bf-110 will be going the other way, nose pitched up, trying to reverse its direction and losing speed quickly because it's a big ol' brick. At this point you have an altitude and probably speed advantage as well. From here on the outcomes are many. If energy allows, you can continue the climbing spiral and make sure the Bf-110 is left far below you before you attack; you can also level out and evaluate the situation; or you can turn that into a classic rope-a-dope and bring your nose down on the Bf-110 while it is still slow. Whatever happens, from this point onwards you will have the initiative and options to dictate the engagement. For what it's worth you can also happily cruise home while the Bf-110 is left in the dust, done that a few times. If there are more than one, the same principles of exploiting their weaknesses apply, only then you have to make sure that your move doesn't put you in the firing line of another enemy. I used to practice gunnery by setting up a quick mission, one La-5 vs. 4 or 6 Bf-110s, can't recall now. Invariably after the merge I would gain altitude and start working on the targets from the highest to lowest one. If I was disciplined enough they would never land a shot, whereas when I went for the kill against one Bf-110 hanging out lower the ones flying above it would get a pop at me. 1
JG13_opcode Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 You roll significantly faster than he does. If you're at the same speed and/or altitude: Start a banking turn. As soon as you see his wings more or less parallel to yours, reverse your bank. Repeat.
Finkeren Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 Lucas nailed it. Stay on top of the fight, and you'll have no trouble with the 110s. Also keep in mind, that despite being a multi-crew, twin-engined aircraft, the Bf 110 is a fighter and was designed as such, meaning its design emphasised speed and maneuverability. No it was never as good as the single-engined fighters it faced, but it certainly wasn't useless either.
[CPT]milopugdog Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 It's not really something to be fearful of in the first place, but the worst thing you can do is underestimate it. Especially since you've got freaks like me who main the thing and know what to do in fights. 2

=WH=PangolinWranglin Posted September 29, 2016 Author Posted September 29, 2016 Thanks for the tips they helped a lot. I think I was just overestimating my Yak's ability to turn. For your help here is a cool looking shot I got of my victory. 2

For your help here is a cool looking shot I got of my victory. Bf110E-2 - produced from october 1940. Yak-1 VK-105PF - produced from late summer 1942. Fair play, hehe. Lets see, when we will have Bf110G-2
