Jason_Williams Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 A friend of mine who happens to be part of the Sturmovik community gave me an amazing opportunity today to fly a Level D simulator at his work. It might have been the best time I've ever had with my pants on. Thank you AOD for this opportunity. I've only ever flown PC simulators and never a full-motion Level D sim or a real plane for that matter. The sim was an awesome piece of machinery and technology. AOD filmed me try to fly it and land it with my phone. I survived all the take-offs and landings, but some were ugly. The experience gave me a whole new level of appreciation for real pilots and when you add the motion it really feels like you are in the sky. Even though my brain new it was a simulation you really try not to crash. Something I rarely care about in my PC flying. My PC sim flying experience did help me get past the new sensations of motion and vibrations which at first were quite distracting and gave me butterflies and slight disorientation. I quickly looked at my instruments and focused on the numbers it was telling me and I relaxed. Although not in the video we did a stall at 20k Ft. Now that was scary, but I pulled out ok. We also practiced some traffic avoidance, I dodged a 737. Anyways, the talented people and professionals that make up the Sturmovik community never cease to amaze me. Thanks again AOD for the opportunity! https://youtu.be/8uQbb5Ts96M Jason 29
Neil Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Hey Jason, congratulations! what a wonderful experience! Being a real pilot, I would love to try one of those full motion level D sims to see how much it feels "real"
Guest deleted@50488 Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Jason, I know those too :-) Now just think your IL2's FDM is much much better than the ones on those ! If we could just port it to a LevelD .....
LLv34_Flanker Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 S! Must have been a very nice experience
Lusekofte Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Smart move , always grab the opportunity if it rises. Just sitting in that simulator must have been a good experience . Good job
I/JG27_Rollo Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Nice video. Thanks for sharing! Oh, and ... Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope!
Feathered_IV Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Nice! Looks like great fun. There's a company in the shopping area below my apartment that does that too. They've got a full simulator for airline pilots to keep their hours on. $260 for 30 minutes last time I checked though, so its not something I'll be doing anytime soon unfortunately.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Cool stuff sounds a lot of fun. When I was doing my PPL at Atwater I got to have a go in the B52 simulator at Castle AFB. it took two of us just to get it off the ground lol 1
Nil Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 AOD filmed me try to fly it and land it with my phone Not bad to land it with your phone No seriously sounds like a great time!

Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Glideslope! Ya ain't that the truth. I had made a few landings and that one was the only one with it bitching at me about glideslope. I was just going to ignore it until it raised the volume which I didn't expect so I tried to shut it up. Jason Cool stuff sounds a lot of fun. I/JG27_Rollo Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 (edited) Ya ain't that the truth. I had made a few landings and that one was the only one with it bitching at me about glideslope. I was just going to ignore it until it raised the volume which I didn't expect so I tried to shut it up. Jason Guess it's like in some cars which will get very loud about not having the seatbelt fastened. Apart from being off-center, the landing itself looked quite good though. Being halfway through my flying lessons I can say that getting the flare height right when not being used to a particular aircraft is one of the trickier aspects of landing. So well done. JimTM Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Fantastic experience Jason. Now, you need to go to some place like Air Combat USA and report back on the real thing.

Ya I've been meaning to do that if they are still around. i haven't kept up. But I don't want to go with someone who isn't into sims. Jason
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 NIce! Considering a D Sim Instructor position for a second career in about five years.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Very nice, Jason I've been fortunate enough to have given a go at a few of these through the years. The difference in visuals and overall fidelity is fun to observe. The first was an F-5E simulator back in 2003, then an A-29 sim in 2008, and the Su-30MKI sim in 2009. The first was close to CFS 1, the second more like the very first Il-2, and the last something like Lock On, for the lack of better analogies. Ah, but they were all so much fun!
6./ZG26_Gielow Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 (edited) Welcome to the club, Jason! !! Great flying But I think the flight standard/safety officer will have some stuff to work on it Last week CAE São Paulo, A32F training: The Holy Grail, maybe next year: The only thing I don't think it's real enough on those simulators is ground handling. That's why I really appreciate Devs working hard on BoS taxi mechanics. Anyway, I feel more attached to the ground right now on BoS than on those full motion multimillion dollars simulators.
