Cybermat47 Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 I've been playing as the IJN and USN in IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 with the Dark Blue World mod (I also have HSFX, but for some reason Pacific scenarios crash for me with that install) in anticipation of BoMw. I played a single mission, where you play as a D3A1 pilot attacking Battleship Row. Hiromachi gave me information on how D3A1 pilots carried out their attacks (I was confused by the lack of floor window), so I applied that information here with pleasing results. As shallow a dive as I can do under the circumstances towards the target, USS Arizona, to keep it in view. Not even a second later, USS California is hit with a torpedo from a B5N2. Returning to HIJMS Zuikaku. I missed the USS Arizona, instead hitting the stern of the repair ship USS Vestal and sinking her. I then destroyed a Catalina by strafing it. I then booted up the Battle of Midway mission for the Dauntless, and found that it had a floor window Beginning to dive on a flattop. Not quite close enough to be confident of a hit yet... Barely a hit on the stern, but with a 1000Ib bomb, I think I did some damage! Two other SBDs got hits, and the flattop soon began to list. She was either destroyed or crippled. 1
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 I want to hit a maneuvering destroyer, that is pretty much hardest possible target to score on. USS Sims usually comes to my mind in such discussions. 2
Finkeren Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 I want to hit a maneuvering destroyer, that is pretty much hardest possible target to score on. USS Sims usually comes to my mind in such discussions. Well, from BoS we have experience hitting moving cars in dive bombing. I'd say that's a harder target.
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 I'm not sure about that. It's smaller for sure, but its not responding with everything there is on board. And then you have those big boys: 1
Feathered_IV Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Cybermat, you may wish to change your settings to OpenGL and set landscape to Perfect, so that you can get better water and textures to what you've got there. 2
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Yeah, switch to OpenGL and you will get this 2
Feathered_IV Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Ha, yep. Simpson Harbour. Well spotted! 1
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Sure thing Emil ! I got one for ya, It's an early Tamiya Quick Building Kit - you only need glue and tape ! Put it together and off you go 2
-=PHX=-SuperEtendard Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Gotta love these 1:1 scale models
VBF-12_Stele Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 I miss the Pacific gaming so much; I can't wait for BoMw. There is an AcesOverPacific (good replacement now that Zekes v Wildcat and Spits v 109 are gone) server in Hyperlobby these days; gets a few people at a time.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 One ticket to the hype train please
curiousGamblerr Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 (edited) One ticket to the hype train please choo choo I'm sure I'll reinstall 1946 and do some carrier landings at some point in the next two years while we wait. I'm on the verge already but we've got a while so I'm saving that for when I really can't take the wait anymore Edited September 25, 2016 by 19.GIAP//curiousGamblerr
gn728 Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 It's kinda awesome that old '46 is still hanging in. I think it shows how well they struck a balance of game features. Currently running WAW with all 20 parts installed - (plus TGA and The Jet Age)...
6./ZG26_Emil Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Sure thing Emil ! I got one for ya, It's an early Tamiya Quick Building Kit - you only need glue and tape ! Put it together and off you go He he :D 777 will do carrier landings better than anyone else has ever done. I'm not too interested in the Pacific but I am dieing to see the ground handling on the deck of a carrier 1
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 These things come better online and in a group. Watching a group of six people take off, ace it over the target then have every single one of them crash into the deck on the way back will be hilarious. 'Steady... steaaaady... nearly there, aaaand... Oooooooh, f-'

216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 - CO-OP Multiplayer Game Mode (ROF-like to start) Does the Rise of Flight coop mode allow for human vs. AI? If so, we're set!
6./ZG26_Emil Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Does the Rise of Flight coop mode allow for human vs. AI? If so, we're set! I think that is their definition of coop like arma. For the il2 people coop means something different...where you could fill slots for a pvp battle
Cybermat47 Posted September 26, 2016 Author Posted September 26, 2016 Here's an excellent documentary about the Pacific air war, from Pearl Harbour to Midway.
hames123 Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Wait in that screenshot a few posts ago, is that a huge para-drop on Rabaul?
Feathered_IV Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Wait in that screenshot a few posts ago, is that a huge para-drop on Rabaul? Yes, looking east from the harbour near the NDL wharf, across Mango Avenue and the sports ground with Namanula Road curving away beyond. Don't get me started on Rabaul.
TWC_Ace Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 (edited) Midway with ROF/BOS engine will be "another dimension". Cant wait. Edited September 26, 2016 by blackram 1
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 That makes me wonder how actually devs will tackle the issue with scope gunsights, in old Il-2 it was handled moderately well for its time and there werent many issues when dive bombing but when it came to dogfighting ... well, mechanics was just crude and not so cool. War Thunder tried various ways across the years and none was good, the latest one seems to give a high magnification while at the same time engine doesnt really handle that well and so objects in sighs appear poorly rendered. But the biggest issue so far I encountered, that no sim somehow could place properly was a gap between top of cowling and fov from sights, I often lost targets because I saw them in front of me, then I lean towards the sight and see them again but trying to follow them they quickly vanished because of that "gap" even though they were still in front of me. Actual telescopic sights did not have a great magnification and because the sight itself places field of vision further forward than standard reflector sights (like Revi) it has somewhat greater downward deflection. Here is the example of view in sights of Ki-43-I (I dont know the range towards the target and dont know exact magnification) :
Cybermat47 Posted September 26, 2016 Author Posted September 26, 2016 Yeah, the telescopic sights are going to be... interesting I think the aldis sight in RoF is telescopic, but I'm not entirely sure.
Cybermat47 Posted September 26, 2016 Author Posted September 26, 2016 Aldis is not telescopic. Thank you for the clarification
Sokol1 Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 (edited) I think that is their definition of coop like arma. For the il2 people coop means something different...where you could fill slots for a pvp battle IL-2:46 COOP can be: PxAI, P&AIxAI, P&AIxP&AI or PvP only (difference from "doghfight" is no respawn and can have moving ground/sea AI units in non MOD'ed game). II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Clearly Fink was refering to size and maneuverabiltiy, tactics and defensive weapons aside. Hitting a ship thrown hard over will be challenging for a number of reasons.
Ace_Pilto Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Yes I know that. I also can read and comprehend English... It will come down to: do I try a long bomb and miss 90% of the time or a low drop and die 90% of the time? Smart people will go with option 1.
Skoop Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 I'm hyped for the pacific, best choice they could make. Just wish it was releasing tomorrow..... 2

It will come down to: do I try a long bomb and miss 90% of the time or a low drop and die 90% of the time? Smart people will go with option 1. Depends on an awful lot of factors and how many friends you bring with you for the assault.
Ace_Pilto Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 And how effective the bombs are when they do hit. If you have good bombs that can punch through armour it's worth taking more of a risk. I think sinking something like a carrier will give people a huge sense of team accomplishment. More so than destroying a few buildings and vehicles. There's going to be so much more to Midway than the limited planeset suggests.
Cybermat47 Posted September 27, 2016 Author Posted September 27, 2016 (edited) Do these cars have dozens of people in them who are shooting at you with everything from 5 inch cannon to .303 machine guns? The 5 inch cannons are only for surface-to-surface warfare, shooting an aircraft with them isn't going to do much good. From what I can find, the largest AA gun we'll find on a DD at Midway is a 50. cal. As Hiromachi said, a DD's greatest defensive asset is it's small size and speed, which makes it extremely difficult to hit with anything other than a torpedo launched from an undetected submarine. This is why they're so difficult to destroy. They're faster than trucks or cars, can pull very tight turns, and they have a very shallow draft, meaning that many torpedoes will simply slip right under her. Ace_Pilto Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 The 5 inch cannons are only for surface-to-surface warfare, shooting an aircraft with them isn't going to do much good. 5" guns were often installed on DP mounts (Dual Purpose, AA and SS) so they were specifically used in the AA role with the reasonable expectation of having some effect.
Cybermat47 Posted September 27, 2016 Author Posted September 27, 2016 5" guns were often installed on DP mounts (Dual Purpose, AA and SS) so they were specifically used in the AA role with the reasonable expectation of having some effect. I stand corrected, USS Aylwin (DD-355) had 5"/38. cal DP guns at the Battle of Midway 1
Ace_Pilto Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 To be fair I imagine tracking an aerial target with them while under bombardment would prove 'challenging'.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 I've heard it said that the proximity fuse won the air war in the Pacific. Flipping through the dreaded Wikipedia it seems some credited it with even more importance. Wonder if it will be modeled for allied AAA?
