E69_geramos109 Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 (edited) What about German fuel ? What was Luftwaffe situation in regard to fuel ? Maybe the fact that germany was dependent from rumany to the fuel suply has something to do. But there were no problems with standar quality fuel. No, its the same mindset trap Japanese fell into. Quality vs Quantity. Germans had Tigers and Panthers, Japanese had Yamato, Long Lance torpedoes and whatever you name. Belief that higher quality, more advanced designs can equal odds proved to be wrong in that war. And Germany could take a different way, trying to produce more simple designs. It's no overstatement that in many designs Germany produced technical marvels that were so over-complicated that their servicing and mass production proved great problem. Ok. They did not have iron, fuel, trained people, resources in general to make a large army but you are more clever than Speer. German doctrine in war was so diferent and was not prepared for a long war. Quite the oposite. At the begining they were not better in tecnologic in a lot of parts but the tactic made the difference. After 43 they were outnumbered in all the fronts and to have chance in some counter attack was the main hope for the german army. On that situation to have equal or inferior material was not the best idea. Tanks like panther and tiger were designed to combat on long distances against the T34 there they stopped a lot of attacks. At the end the lack of suply and air superiority were the main problem for the german tanks but they worked quite well against other tanks. "If we forget politics" then we are still left with large numbers of slave labor. Nothing particularly heroic in that multiple conquered nations were exploited ... Ok. German army were shit. No heroes. They hold only by luck and slaves. Gulags were a happy estance for prisioners on 5 star hotels. German soilders were all evil and nazis. Too many tarantino movies and history channel for you i think And at the same time they failed with basics. I think you mean Romania, and yes, it was. But there were no problems with standar quality fuel. That's not what I've read, lacks of fuel prevented units from training missions and whatever was available was strictly limited to combat use. Ok. They did not have iron, fuel, trained people, resources in general to make a large army but you are more clever than Speer Wait a second. So you mean they had resources to produce more sophisticated designs and field them but would not be able to produce less advanced designs ? Logic just cries. Well, judging by strategic errors in production, some things could have been done better to say delicately. Ok. German army were shit. No heroes. They hold only by luck You behave like a little kid that believes in heroes and their legend. I'm telling you that not everything was so great, German soldiers were not Übermensch and suffered same problems as other nations or even greater due to situation they put themselves into. Well, judging by strategic errors in production, some things could have been done better to say delicately. You need different kind of resources to do that. If you have few material is better to do a shit tank with that ot trying to make the best as posible to take profit of the lack of material? To mantain a large motoriced army also takes more logistical problems and more fuel to mantain it runing in combat. Americans had to stop his advance due to logistical problems because they extend too much the suply lines so is sad that you can not understand my logic. Go ask Speer. For sure you would be a better armament minister than him. You behave like a little kid that believes in heroes and their legend. You refuse to accept any of this and stick to wishful thinking. Again you are taking my words and making your own interpretation trying to unvalidate my argumentation with that. There Were heroic situations in all armys and of core there were war crimes in all armys as well but German army, some generals, some units, some pilots call the way you want had a enormous merit to hold the entire world and to make some counter ofensives near the success. They gave some lessons and establiced a lot of war estrategy even valid nowadays so yes they had merit doing that as the americans had metit making an unestopable estrategical bomber doctrine. I dont have to twist your words, you yourself are quite unclear and make comments which fail at some logic levels (see above). Kurfurst Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Spitfire XIV was hardly a small scale production fighter with over 1100 built. For comparison: 40-80 Ta-152s were ever built and a total of ~700 of the previously mentioned BF-109 A/S variants were built. Spitfire XIV was without a doubt the best mass produced piston engined fighter of the war. More like cc 300 of them by the end of 1944, equipping 5 or 6 Squadrons, depending on the date. Thats about 70 planes in operational status or the maximum number of aircraft flying. (without immediate reserves) "Mass produced"...
-WILD-AlbinoHA5E Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 (edited) The Victoria Cross is awarded for ... most conspicuous bravery, or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy. Medal of Honor The President may award, and present in the name of Congress, a medal of honor of appropriate design, with ribbons and appurtenances, to a person who while a member of the Army (naval service; Navy and Marine Corps) (Air Force) (Coast Guard), distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. I bet even some German Soldiers fullfilled these Criteria. The cause doesn't matter, if in any particular Situation a Man goes "beyond the call of duty" to save his comrades, that makes him a Hero. 3./JG15_Kampf Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 I read a story about spitfires. The English sent 27 spitfire to the autralia to fight in the Pacific. At the end of two weeks they had lost 17 of the 27 spitfire. Does anyone know this story?
Moochy_Gandalf Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 (edited) You are aware that Red Tails is probably the worst thing in the history of War Movies ever. It's a horrible Movie, worse than the Star Wars Prequels. And the Me-262, well, 4x30mm Cannons Up there as a contender as worst war film in history we also have to consider the truly awful "Fury." The Panzergrenadier attack at the end is just the most ridiculous piece of fiction every committed to film. Just a horrendous mess. PS: Redtails is the worst! JG13_opcode Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Much lower? British Mustangs used 25lb boost. The USAAF flew over 330,000 fighter sorties in 1944. Several fatal crashes is insignificant, tho not for the pilots involved in the crashes. I doubt they were cruising at 25 lb. The low cruise power is what caused dirty combustion.
Asgar Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 (edited) Not entirely true, as in 1945 8th air force would run their brand new P-51H's at +40lbs clocking 785 km/h and their P-47J superbolt prototype flew to Berlin and back on a recon mission flying at 850 km/h and german me262s tried to intecept it but the superbolt went into a shallow dive and dove back to england and the jets couldnt catch it nice story bro. in 1947 Adolf flapped his wings and flew to the US Edited November 14, 2016 by 6./ZG26_Asgar
tomo-pauk Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Nobody was cruising on +25 psi, nor the P-51H went with more than +30 psi. Especially not in Europe, where war ended before P-51H was in service units. (X)P-47J (= prototype) never left the USA.

At the end of two weeks they had lost 17 of the 27 spitfire. Does anyone know this story? It was RAAF No. 1 Fighter Wing equipped with tropicalised Spitfire's MK Vc powered by high altitude Merlin 46 (for their luck), they were commanded by Clive Caldwell, definitely overconfident guy. This unit was a mix of fresh pilots and veterans, they actually had a good record from Africa and did fine fighting Luftwaffe so I'd not joke about that. However Caldwell was overconfident and he tried to use tactics that couldnt fit the kind of enemy he was up against, though its not that they used exactly the same tactics as against 109s in Africa ... More like after 7 months of combat (though not extremely intensive, Darwin air battles were most intensive in May and June but still not comparably to Eastern Front daily activity) they lost over 30 Spitfires and 22 pilots (if we take A. Cooper account which some consider conservative) against Japanese Navy losses of 3 Zeros lost with their pilots, 1 Zero ditching (pilot survived) and 11 G4M Betties (some shot down, some made it back but crash landed on Timor). On one occasion there was an Army raid (Oscars escorting Ki-49s and Ki-48s) where Japanese lost single Oscar, three Ki-49s and two Ki-48s (both however made it back to Timor, albeit they crash landed) but price for those was quite big, 4 Spitfires. So yeah, overall Spitfires did not do well against Japanese over Darwin. You can find details in Anthony Cooper "Darwin Spitfires. The Real Battle for Australia" which however carries some mistakes, thus would be good to combine it with other readings. 1
NZTyphoon Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 (edited) Later it all becomes quite chaotic with Long and Short tipped Spits, thousands of Merlin Variants, 18lbs and 25lbs of boost... Actually, by 1944 there were just two Merlin variants being fitted to Spitfires: the Merlin 66 was the main production variant (L.F. MK VIIIs and IXs), with the Merlin 70 coming a distant second (P.R. Mk XI, H.F. Mk VIII and IX). Wingtips = standard, clipped and extended, in order of production numbers, noting that the wingtips could be, and often were, changed at an MU or Squadron level. Edited November 15, 2016 by NZTyphoon

Max_Damage Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 (edited) I dont think 25 lbs spifire was very proliferate. It was literally non existent during 1944. With +18 lbs it is quite far from a top performer really. 510-530 kmh at deck depending on if it is F, LF or HF. It climbs and turns but has below average speed. But same can be said about the bf109 as well. Most of them were G6'1943 (no mw50) and later G14. Are G14 usually found with or without mw50? As a typical early and late 1944 bf109. Wounded Pride is what fuels most Hate and Violence. In the End, had Germany and Japan won, or the way it finally went, Millions of People would have died and did die. We could have a historic Discussion, but it's the Internet, and Godwins Law applies. "especially if you are allied with Italians and other Proud People", well, that's quite insulting to be honest. And mind you, nobody insulted you before (or your nation). First and foremost, show some respect to the thousands that died, then,at least, learn a little about history (of other nations, that is) before saying something like that. That same statement has the same meaning of "... well, we were on the verge of winning, but let's blame the others if we (Hitler, mind you...) failed..."; that's the mentality of a loser; I heard it many times in and around the other side of the Alps. Oh... and we could say that and almost all the major defeats suffered by the Regia Marina in the Med were direct results of german enigma machines being decrypted by the Brits (whom we respected always a lot, even when enemies, even before and after the war), from Matapan to convoy intercepted out of nowhere by subs and Beauforts. We could say something more stinky and cite some great examples of german army acts and feats during the war which are appalling even today, and perhaps will always remain in the future of mankind. But let's stay civilized. Anyway, back to the argument. I am sorry if I moved on a hornets' nest, but my opinion was only that the Spitfire, later versions, were a superior "instrument of war" compared to the Me. 262 (by itself a wonderful plane and a revolution in every engineering fields). At the same time, the T-34 and Shermans were superior "instrument of wars" compared to Tigers and Panthers, considering the circumstances, considering the logistical requirements, the numbers used and produces, reliability (we have to stress this), improvements, ease of use for former army personnel, ease of use in the field for mechanics, used and tested technology, etc etc.. It's the same theory that if maybe the germans concentrated on building a much larger numbers of improved Pz IVs and Stugs, probably they would have had better success later on. Building a cool Panther that shredded its gears just after some kms is a strategic disaster. They would have lost anyway, but they could have at least prolonged the war. It's the "total package" that creates a good "war tool", not the best characteristics (speed or whatever) that we can see in Wikipedia. There is more than that. 2
II./JG77_Manu* Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 -snip- Agree with everything apart from the 262. 262 was just a generation up compared to anything else in WW2. Proper organized (bigger) squadrons of 262, flying tactical correct for such an aircraft, and not having to fear getting shot down while starting or landing would have been more or less unbeatable by everything the allies had, no matter if Spitfire, La7, or a big bomber. Would have been like 109 against biplanes...it would already have made a huge difference, if the 262 would have been used properly from the beginning, and not as bomber or such nonsense. Fully agree on the tanks though. Maus is the best example.

But because i'm so kind, and like to help to show the way to blind people, i will post you the 957 airframes numbers of all MK14 variants, so you can directly start working on it: i'm very impatient to see your conclusions SPOILER ALERT: some MK14 have been downed by those little slow, not able to turn "Würgers" Don't you want to see the MK12 stats, those are really hilarous MT847 FRXIV KEA G65 (Interim) prod proto for intro of thicker skin at tailplane root 4-4-44 6MU 24-2-45 AAEE 15-12-45 29MU 18-2-46 226OCU 14-11-50 33MU 2-8-51 to 6960M 28-5-52 extant Cosford MT848 FRXIV EA G65 prod proto to intro Vokes wet type Aeroply filter 22-8-44 9MU 7-3-45 215MU 17-5-45 Samsturdy 2-7-45 India 28-7-45 6RIAF crashed force-landed nr Ranchi CE 12-9-46 MT849 FRXIV KEA G65 33MU 13-2-45 222MU 29-4-45 Empire Dynasty 16-5-45 India 7-6-45 28S Stalled on landing and u/c collapsed Kuala Lumpur 17-12-46 SOC 30-1-47 MT850 FRXIV KEA G65 33MU 21-2-45 84GSU 30-7-45 453S 6-9-45 CC 29-1-46 SOC 12-6-46 MT851 FRXIV KEA G65 33MU 21-2-45 215MU 18-5-45 Samsturdy 2-7-45 India 28-7-45 SOC 29-11-45 MT852 FRXIV KEA G65 33MU 29-3-45 84GSU 12-4-45 268S 19-4-45 16S 1-11-45 Flew into tree descending out of low cloud Celle pilot killed 15-2-46 SOC 35WSU 28-2-46 MT853 FRXIV G65 used by Super as prod proto 31-10-44 RAF 27-2-45 63S 26S to RNethAF as instructional airframe MT854 FRXIV KEA G65 33MU 24-2-45 76MU 4-10-45 Clan MacBrayne 28-11-45 returned to 76MU for re-erection 28-11-45 34MU 26-5-47 sold rtp 1979 MT855 FRXIV EA G65 6MU 1-3-45 613S 3-5-47 FAAC 30-7-47 recat sold scrap Eyre Smelting 30-12-48 MT856 FRXIV KEA G65 33MU 5-3-45 215MU 18-5-45 Samsturdy 2-7-45 India 28-7-45 20S SOC 25-7-46 MT857 FRXIV CHA G65 39MU 27-2-45 76MU 8-10-45 Clan MacBrayne 29-11-45 returned to 76MU for re-erection 29-11-45 nea 28-3-51 sold Cindal Aluminium 30-8-51 MT858 FRXIV KEA G65 (Interim) Norton 25-2-45 used by Super as prod proto 8-1-46 Hullavington 28-1-47 to Pendine rocket firing trials.
