SAG Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 (edited) EDIT: I dont mean as in silencing or changing other peoples posts, i mean as in being able to Completely shut down a thread or maybe just delete completely off topic posts or personal attacks. EndEdit. It is not alien to any of us forum dwellers that a long going discussion about something can get heated sometimes, specially in such a community where most people have at least some nice degree of knowledge about whatever theyre talking/posting about. But very often, it is very sad to see a very good discussion going on and enventually tailspin into a series of personal attacks, or derail into some other topic completely foreign to the OP, this happens often and often gets locked up or simply just dies because the original conversation is no longer going on and people cannot enjoy a good discussion anymore. You all probably know by now what i want to use as an example, (every) 190 threads, there are some just discussing how to fly the actual plane and asking for help with getting more proficient with it and you guys know what that always comes down to and the Original Poster doesnt get the aswers he was looking for, or look on some other discussions where people want to talk about how AI could be improved and people just derail the conversation by saying stuff like "go play MP then" or something similar. now, i'm not trying to start a flame thread of my own here, im just trying to maybe offer a feature for the forum users to keep things in track. ive never been in a heated discussion on these forums but im often frustrated by threads that are of great interest to me but go bad because of X or Y SUB-discussion/fight going on; so i stop following or reading the thread, I dont know if this would be an easy implementation, but i think it would keep interested people on the right threads and keep discussions true to their original intent. i know I'd be a happier forum reader! SAG Posted September 18, 2016 Author Posted September 18, 2016 Thats not going to end well Why do you think that? I'm not trying to sound rude or anything. Do you think its a bad idea?
SvAF/F16_Goblin Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 I think the concern is that the OP will moderate inputs not in line with own ideas and then we might have a delete festival rendering everything unreadable Understand your idea but I must disagree with it.
6./ZG26_McKvack Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 The idea sounds nice. I can support the idea of being able to close the thread but not deleting comments because in the end people will still abuse it. Its just going to happen. I moderated a forum before and did live support as well and to reduce our workload during busy hours the site admins added this feature but it turned out just like I mentioned above. The best thing is to add some more volunteering moderators that are active on the forum. Current moderators are great but a few more wont hurt. They cant clean up every thread all the time.

I guess youre right, internet can be a very wild place. too bad there arent enough Moderators, but still SOME degree of control could be implemented? maybe ideas coming from someone with a bit more experience on the subject than I
Extreme_One Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 Just use the Ignore function. Then you don't need to read the rubbish that clutters up your threads.
coconut Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 Maybe have a "report off-topic post" button? Combined with a branching topology of threads, instead of linear. Probably not feasible unless the forum software supports here. Or we could all have our fw190 discussions on Reddit. It has its flows, but off-topic dueling would have a good chance to end up at -1.
seafireliv Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 Bad idea. Let the official Mods do it.
J2_Trupobaw Posted September 18, 2016 Posted September 18, 2016 (edited) Bad idea - some people start threads for trolling purpose even without this kind of power . Just report your own thread to moderator, ask to close it for you, and let him judge if other people deserve to have fun with the subject without your approval. I have seen quite a few frivolous / malicious threads on RoF forum salvaged by community, only for OT to ask for them to be closed. Edited September 18, 2016 by Trupobaw
