Lymark Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 (edited) So, it was just another ordinary Ju88 fight, climbing out of 3k under climb mode. All of a sudden, a 'engine damaged' on my 2nd engine popped up, and it went out roughly 20sec later. Not long after, it happened to my last engine as well. I was under climb mode for only a little over 5mins, cowl shutter was at 80%, temp was at 100c-ish with over 400 liter of juice each. No white nor black trails. I have been flying in such setting for a while now, so I have no idea what went wrong... Edited September 12, 2016 by Lymark
6./ZG26_McKvack Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 did you try turning it off and on again? 1
Asgar Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 what was the oil temp? if it was winter and you had cowl shutters at 80% the oil temperature might have dropped below minimum 1
216th_Jordan Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 sometimes you're riding at the edge of climb mode and enter emergency mode unnoticed.
Lymark Posted September 12, 2016 Author Posted September 12, 2016 what was the oil temp? if it was winter and you had cowl shutters at 80% the oil temperature might have dropped below minimum You're correct, I simulated the same situation, and the temp dropped all the way down to 45C and the engine stopped. However I'm unable to restart it tho, is it a goner?
Asgar Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 well, if the oil temperature drops your engine isn't getting lubricated correctly and that usually leads to the pistons seizing
Pharoah Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 fuel starvation! lol yes the JU88 engines are quite fickle...hell all the Luftwaffe engines required a bit of TLC, but once you got them purring....they'll keep purring. I usually forget which a/c have oil radiators, etc etc and end up just opening everything. Keep in mind though, when flying in winter/snow, you will need to monitor your temps (and not open the rads too much) or your engine freezes! lol. You get little snow flake warnings - I didn't realise what that was for until they died. DOH!!
GridiroN Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 (edited) the JU88 starts with it's cowls shut, so I imagine you probably overheated. Either that or your over-RPM'd/ATA'ed for too long. The Jumo is a lot more particular about it's RPM and ATA settings than the M105. Edited September 13, 2016 by GridiroN
Asgar Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 yes he probably overheated, especially since he states in his first post that he was climbing with cowl shutters at 80% ...
