What chairs do you use with pedals?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm curious about getting pedals. I got the saitek combat pedals last year but I didnt enjoy them and ended up returning them.

One of the issues was that with an office chair with wheels it's very difficult to use pedals because you end up moving the chair and the pedal and you lose a lot of the accuracy that you would expect to gain with pedals.

I've seen some homemade "pilot" chairs with the stick in the middle but I'd think that's just a handful of people.

Do you use a regular (non-wheeled) chair?

Thanks,

I use wheeled one but the problem you described happens from time to time (also depends on what direction wheels are turned to).

I am pretty sure I saw an office chair with wheels removable, still looking for it...

I'm on carpet, and the wheels dig in enough for the chair not to move, as long as it stays in the groove. Need the pedals on a fairly light spring setting though.

Perhaps you just need a few rubber chocks for your wheels?

I've built my own game-chair with a car seat on a wooden frame.

I'm using a regular office chair with rolls on a wooden floor. I'm using two about 1 mm thick soft rubber mats which i fold over a few times until they are around 2-3 cm thick and then jam them under two of the rolls. The chair doesn't move anymore.

Probably not the most elegant solution, but it's cheap and works and uses no space and it's easy to set up.

Sounds like the rubber chocks are the best solution for me.

I feel like there are no good office chairs without wheels.

Thanks for the answers!

I'm using a car seat too. You could also remove the wheel from the office chair. But it certainly would be harder to roll it out of the way.

Ok here is another solution,VKB Pedals are made for use with a officechair on wheels in mind. They don't move like usual pedals back and forth, but more like Helicopter pedals up and down.

LOL, Piri!

not be able to roll it away is desired in this case...

As to the up & down pedals I am realy NOT sure I would like it

I know this might sound a bit odd,

But i use two adjustable climbing straps mounted with D-clips to attach myself to my bench so i don't fly backwards the first time i use the pedals!

Just clip myself in and away i go!!

I would really like to see the pic :)

The office chairs I wrote about had wheels which could be detached, leaving a stable base...

I know, but sometimes you may have to move it to somewhere else, like when you need to get under the desk or something.^^

BTW I saw another solution somewhere. He had a wooden plate and made cut outs for two of the wheels.

I'm using a camping chair like this one :

But I intend to switch to a car seat somewhere in the future, because after a few hours flying, this one hurts my back a little.

I got a furniture maker to make me a very solid almost straight backed wooden chair with arms and a detachable board across the arm rests to place the HOTAS. Puts it at just the right height, nothing slips or slides, and it makes me sit up straight, so good for the dodgy back!

Fortunately that is cheap do here, but worth every penny if you waste as much of your life as I do in front of a screen. ;)

I use a plain old wooden dining chair. With a cushion for my tush!

I have my pedals strapped to a board, which is strapped to a rubber mat. Chair sits on rubber mat. I can kick those pedals to Pluto and back, and there is no sliding!

For wheeled chairs, the solution is very similar, except: (a) use a plywood board instead of a rubber mat; (b) cut holes in board for wheels of chairs to lock into

I use a comfortable office chair with wheels.... I sliced open a few old tennis balls (about halfway) and put them over the wheels to keep it from sliding too much. The chair can still be moved but there is enough resistance to keep it stable. Also has the benefit of not scratching my hardwood floors.

Good idea, I have a similar chair and am on a concrete floor, may have to give that a try.

Here's my flight chair, an "ergonomics over appearance" approach. Note the FPO/beer bottle holder :)

I had a more comfortable armchair type of solution, but I couldn't get used to the sidestick configuration so I had to ditch that one.

More than a chair but I use and recommend the Obutto 'Revolution' gaming cockpit. My MFG crosswind pedals are screwed to the angled plate. They just fit for width, but work fine. The (car) seat is comfortable and adjustable forward and back. It has a holder for joystick and throttle.

I'm on carpet... Mounted the crosswinds to a piece of wood which leans up at a slight angle on the wall. I have an Aeron chair with the carpet wheels and I don't have any issues with it moving, and I've got the tension pretty tight on the pedals.

I have a dreamflyer set up - really cool bit of engineering - in storage currently but with vr goggles and a large fan where the monitor used to go - will be even more fun

Picked mine up off Craigslist locally years ago for $500 and was instantly impressed with the engineering and added simulation experience

Just got the Crosswind pedals and now the office chair rolls around like mad. Didn't have the problem with CH pedals but that's because of the huge difference in design. Have taken to using a dining-room chair but it's rather low. I quite like the idea of a car seat; I'll have to go out one night with a jemmy and a few spanners!

Cheers.

Jemmy and Spanner sound like cool guys.

Wait, what?

I have a "car seat" style office chair, it's got wheels but it won't roll easily on carpet. So it figures a good solution for some is just put your chair on a thick carpet with a good grip style pad under it. I put a similar pad under the pedals to grip them to the carpet, it's a rubber shelf liner.

I have an Office chair with VESA mounted Saitek X56 HOTAS (one each side of chair) .

There are several options for a normal office chair.

Castor glides to replace the castors - am actually getting some of these tomorrow so will post before and after pics in my sim pit thread

http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/inabox-office-chair-glides-5-pack-owglidesp5

Braked Castor replacements -  haven't tried but imagine would be too fiddly and wouldn't want to mark the floor. - if you're on carpet or a chair mat, these could be good.

https://www.bunnings.com.au/ambassador-50mm-hooded-socket-furniture-castor-with-brake-2-pack_p3941229

Castor Cups for all manner of floor surfaces - I tried these but I think the Castor glides will be easier because the chair falls off the cups if you move it too quickly.

All cheap and effective!
