Mastermariner Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 Totally missed this one, its...interesting... Master
novicebutdeadly Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 Apparently the ending is incorrect in regards to them never having lost a bomber to enemy action.
Feathered_IV Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 It's not that bad considering the usually awful quality of aviation movies. By comparison the Red Tails movie by George Lucas is so unbelievably terrible it defies description. 1
Uufflakke Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 (edited) Apparently the ending is incorrect in regards to them never having lost a bomber to enemy action. That is an old myth. According new studies 27 bombers got shot down while escorted by the Tuskegee airmen. http://www.tuskegee.edu/sites/www/uploads/files/About%20US/Airmen/Nine_Myths_About_the_Tuskegee_Airmen.pdf Thanks Mastermariner for posting the video. I see it is the full movie in HD. I will bookmark it and watch the movie on a rainy day. I've read so many bad comments about the Red Tails movie it didn't motivate me to see it anyway. AwesomeSprawvy Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 I loved this movie. It came out when I was just getting into WWII aviation and I watched it quite a few times. Red Tails, on the other hand, was a terrible movie. The aerial scenes were pretty, but that's about it.
352nd_Wheels Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 I enjoyed it when it came out on HBO all those years ago. Still a good movie. Wheels
Trident_109 Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 It's not that bad considering the usually awful quality of aviation movies. By comparison the Red Tails movie by George Lucas is so unbelievably terrible it defies description. I remember Cuba Gooding Jr. looking quite embarrassed about the quality of the movie Red Tails while doing the promo tour. It was if his he was secretly apologizing to all who'd see it.
Feathered_IV Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 I can believe it. I actually found that if I turned the sound off I could make my way through the second half of the film. No other film I've ever seen has been both so poor and so predictable as to allow me to do that.
Bearcat Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 Yeah Retails was terrible... I was so disappointed..... The only thing good was seeing all the action.... but the script was horrible.. and some of the action was so cliche..... When I saw the German antagonist ... with his scar ... and a Monacle... I was done. I still watch it for the action scenes if it is on but..... The HBO film was actually based on a real pilot. Bob Williams
Lusekofte Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 There is so few good aviation movies, so in that perspective it is good. But as a movie it is real bad. I simply had enough of this Hollywood perspective . I cannot bring myself to see another one. It has been worse latest years
Gump Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 That is an old myth. I've read so many bad comments about the Red Tails movie it didn't motivate me to see it anyway. thx for that article - much appreciated. . i saw the red tails movie - a few decent arial combat/action scenes. . however, the main plot seem to perpetuate and exaggerate all of the myths that are debunked in this article. for that reason, it is a shame. oppression based on color alone is not a good thing, but puffing up the 'oppressed' beyond fact and truth, to the effect of creating superman, is also disgusting. regarding 'oppression', it is also an interesting investigation to consider the facts in light of the times, instead of viewing the past with modern eye-glasses. such things get ignored in modern stories. . bud anderson talks about jimmy doolittle's famous statement, as he appropriated 8th AAFcommand from a bomber-centric command and removed the 'sign over the door that read "our job is to bring the bombers home safely", that the US fighters' role is "to kill germans". until then, the fighters were ordered to stay close to the bombers, and any wwii student knows about the high percentage of bombers lost with this strategy. when doolittle instructed them to hunt and pursue the enemy (not stick so close to the bomber formations), and instigated "big week" to destroy the luftwaffe, the german threat was diminished and more bombers survived. . in effect, the 332d TA flew in a scenario that was contrary to the strategy that effectively won the air war. as bud anderson says, "we won the war because we killed all of germany's good fighter pilots" when doolittle's strategy was implemented. by the time the 332d TA escorted the bombers, the luftwaffe had been severely beaten and was mostly composed of very inexperienced pilots, with much fewer airplanes. . but, somehow, the movie conveys an image that these guys were better than the white fighter pilots (see myths). what a shame.
Feathered_IV Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 I would have liked to have written a screenplay for the Red Tails movie. Making it from the viewpoint of a new pilot who joins the unit mid-way through it's career.
