216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 23, 2017 Posted September 23, 2017 Navigator/bombardier. During mast-top attacks and torpedo runs (at least in Soviet MTAP) the glasshouse hero was the one doing the aiming and calling the drop on both the A-20 and DB-3. Such was this positions importance that when the US sent A-20Gs and other models without the nose position the anti-shipping units would send them to the rear to get a glass cockpit made in lieu of the guns. In game, use that position to get a clear view of your target when going in low. 1
Royal_Flight Posted September 23, 2017 Posted September 23, 2017 You're the first person I've ever met who has used the words "perfect sense" to describe the imperial system The illogicality of it makes me feel comfortable. Haha
BlitzPig_EL Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 The trouble with kilometers is that they are simply too small. Gee,I just drove eleventy billion km... Which is a short trip here. 1
BlitzPig_EL Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 Reflector gunsight was typical for USAAF A-20B, it was standard US type N-3 gunsight with gunsight head produced by Douglas, just like on pictures in DD 172. Gunsight in P40 B. Took this photo last month at Thunder over Michigan airshow... 3
ShamrockOneFive Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 The trouble with kilometers is that they are simply too small. Gee,I just drove eleventy billion km... Which is a short trip here. On a recent trip I drove 450 kilometers or 280 miles. Not that big of a difference. Since most of that trip was while traveling at 100km/h... the time it took was impossibly easy to figure out. Gunsight in P40 B. Took this photo last month at Thunder over Michigan airshow... Great photo! I didn't realize they just had the reflector there in the glass for the early P-40. I guess to make things easier they reverted to a more typical arrangement later on? It looks fairly clean. Been meaning to make it to Thunder Over Michigan.
Farky Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 I wonder if we can get A-20B with four "fifties" in nose. It wasn't in use in USSR, so probably not. Also A-20B with torpedo would be nice, but we don't get this weapon either I'm afraid. If I remember well, there will be no torpedoes in BoK.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 The technology for aerial dropped torpedoes isn't done just yet but if I got it right it will be added retroactively once it's done for the PTO.
Lusekofte Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 (edited) I would say that the JU87 is the best dive bomber ever made if you are looking at accurate bomb delivery A derail again. But again I read a lot of things about the PE 2, Most was delivered without dive brakes and very few crew´s was trained for it. I know one squadron trained and performed divebomb regulary by initiative from its commander , but mostly it was used as a level bomber. Again I know I am in a minefield of own ignorance , but I think the JU 87 was the best dive bomber together with the Dauntless because of its crew and number of missions. Both could do 90 degree dives and both had the ability to keep a controlled speed in such a dive, both types had very good trained crew, this is why I think we cannot really make a compare between PE 2 and JU 87. For me the A20 will hopefully be modelled in such a way that it take over my favorism and focus on the PE 2. I am really looking forward to it like I did on the HS 129. It is really a dream comming true for me Edited September 24, 2017 by 216th_LuseKofte 1
Jade_Monkey Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Can´t wait to see these guys with their torpedo-cart: Note the ship kill marks: Although we will probably have to wait a bit, future looks bright for ship hunters! Remember, in Kuban the ships hunt you! Those guns on ships are incredibly deadly.
Alexmarine Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Remember, in Kuban the ships hunt you! Those guns on ships are incredibly deadly. They can put a good amount of flak in the air indeed. Especially when they are close together.
Gambit21 Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 (edited) but they said no torpedos for kuban.....at this juncture. Edit - meaning upon release. PTO torpedoes assuming all goes to plan will likely bring Kuban torpedoes down the road. Edited September 25, 2017 by Gambit21
Lusekofte Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Those guns on ships are incredibly deadly. The russian naval airforce suffered terrible losses attacking shipping in North of Norway, so I guess it is historical. We might hesitate attacking ships alone. I do not know the range of dropping torpedoes, but you have to drop them very far away if you gonna avoid flak when turning away
Yogiflight Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Germans did quite often combined attacks of He111s attacking with torpedoes, while at the same time Ju88s attacked in dive bombing, so the AA fire was spread. I would like to see this.
=WH=PangolinWranglin Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I know of Russians skip bombing, but how often did Germans/Axis as a whole do it?
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Germans did quite often combined attacks of He111s attacking with torpedoes, while at the same time Ju88s attacked in dive bombing, so the AA fire was spread. I would like to see this. In the legendary P-39 Arctic Hunters campaign for the old Il-2 there was a mission where you had to intercept He-111s and Ju-88 flying in from different directions towards a convoy. It ended up with the two formations decimated by 37mm and .50 fire, but how fun it was to chase the big guys down low and pluck them off the sky!
