Shatter12 Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 Ok, I have a hard time choosing between an i5 6600K and an i7 6700 (Not the K version, and yes; with a Z series MoBo). What I have chosen for everything else is: GPU: GTX 1060 (Either ASUS or MSI), RAM: 16GB DDR4-2133MHZ (Either Kingston FURY or FURY or G. Skill) Storage: 1TB HDD (Undecided manufacturer though), 128/250GB SSD (Maybe no SSD at all, and like previous; no decided manufacturer), Case: Deepcool TESSERACT BF ATX Mid Tower Case MoBo: Either a H110M or a Z170M depending on whether or not I get a K series i5 or i7. PSU: Anywhere between 500-550W PSU, as 600W+ starts to get a bit expensive for me. OS: Windows 10, 64-bit Monitor: Asus VP228H 21.5" 60Hz Monitor Basically, the system itself would be able to play BoS, WT or DCS once I indeed get the system build, just that the i7 6700 vs. i5 6600K seems a bit to close for me. Doesn't Dx9, or IL-2: BoS/BoM in general benefit from a higher GHZ, no matter the CPU? And does BoS/BoM use hyperthreading? Keep in mind, I will do light, if any video editing, photo shop editing. I will be playing mostly WT and IL-2: BoS, perhaps with a little bit of DCS: World as well Thanks
Remontti Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 From my experience I can say that my new i7 6700k (at 4GHz) is considerably faster than my old i5 2500k (at 4,5GHz) in BoS/BoM. So it's just not about the clock speed. I don't know what kind of difference there is with 6600k vs 6700k.

1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 Go for 6700 K it's costs 10% more than without K but you can easly OC it. I have it and it's about 35% faster on stock clocks than my old i5 2500k at 4,7Ghz.

A K would be to expensive for me, being $50 more expensive, something which I don't really want to use as the PC is already close to being "over-budget". Edited September 1, 2016 by Shatter12
Demon_ Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 (edited) You can easily overclock the i5 6600K to 4.2-4.3Ghz. And don't forget you need a cpu cooler. At least, a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. BOS, DCS don't take benefit of the hyper-threading technology. Edited September 1, 2016 by Demon_

Does that also take into account the CPU, RAM and HDD/SSD (talking about the last link there). So what is the max that an i5 6600K can be OC'd to anyway?
Demon_ Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 (edited) I see; although was the 450Ws for a fully maxed out 1060, or a standard 1060? Probably standard video card and cpu stock speed. Check the spec of the video card. At least, get a (Tier 3) Corsair CX 500-550w. Seasonic are the best. Does that also take into account the CPU, RAM and HDD/SSD (talking about the last link there). The SSD need 5w, the ram need only 6w. CPU at stock speed. A light overclock cpu (4.2-4.3GhZ) need only 10-15 more watts. "All these recommendations are made by the staff of RealHardTech X and based on the best of our knowledge. We recommend, as an alternative source of useful information, that you use the following tool to estimate the approximate whole consumption of your computer." So what is the max that an i5 6600K can be OC'd to anyway? Don't know, 5Ghz or less with an excellent ($$$) cpu cooler, and a guy with very good knowledge. Edited September 1, 2016 by Demon_
Jade_Monkey Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 From someone who has had a few i7, and i5, I would say that in general the i5 is much better bang for the buck especially if you plan to overclock it. Not really sure how different they are for BOS though, probably not much since currently we have DX9 and the game mostly uses a single thread. The upcoming DX11 might change things a bit.
Demon_ Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 (edited) The difference between the i7 6700K and i5 6600K are the hyper-threading (for photo editing, ...) and 2MB more cache memory on the cpu. They are both overclock able at + - the same limit. http://ark.intel.com/products/88195/Intel-Core-i7-6700K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_20-GHz http://ark.intel.com/products/88191/Intel-Core-i5-6600K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz Edited September 2, 2016 by Demon_
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 But OP said its 6600k vs 6700 (without k) so choice is very simple - go with 6600K since its easier to OC and it does as good as i7 in most of the games (since barely any of the games on market utilizes multicore cpus not to mention more threads coming with HT). Here is some recent look:
