P-39 as a collector plane?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

By far one of my favorite aircraft is the p-39, sure its not the best, it has a nasty spin due to the weight being at the back, but its good under 15,000 feet and it was loved by so many Russian pilots.

"Over half of the Airacobras produced, almost 5000 planes, went to the Soviet Union... The majority of the 4,600 P-39s shipped to the Soviet Union were the highly developed Q-models."

most of the p-39s shipped between 1942 and 1944.

the Q-1 model had a 37 mm cannon, two 12 mms, and four 7 mms, the Russians often took out the four 7 mms because they say it effected the rate of roll. so the Q-10s shipped without the 7 mms.

"The Red Air Force employed the P-39 Airacobra in several roles: the most common role was to cover or protect ground forces. This entailed patrolling in a zone above a specific Red Army formation and preventing the penetration into that zone of German bombers and their accompanying fighters. A second mission for the P-39 was to escort Il-2 Shturmoviks or Pe-2 dive bombers to attack German troops and installations. In this role the P-39s were used to fend off German fighters or to suppress German AAA defenses."

the above quotes from http://acepilots.com/planes/p39_airacobra.html sound like this plane will fit right into this amazing game and i hope to see it in the next Theatre.

Sounds reasonable.  It was used just about everywhere and would have plenty of longevity in future expansions.

It could be a good candidate for a bonus plane. :)

I really liked the P-39 in IL2. Good guns and an easy aircraft to land or take off with. A little nose heavy, not a turner, but I liked it. Good survivor as long as you don`t stall. I would certainly vote for it to be in the collector group. Also it had great space for sticking pin up girl artwork on the side! One of my fave P39s had that.

It's a pretty iconic lend lease plane. I'm sure it will make it's way in sometime.

The P-39 was the first plane I tried to fly in the original demo of the original IL2 game so many years ago !

So many fun memories.... even if the graphics and the flight models where not perfect like in this game.

Thanks IL2 games series for so many hours (thousands) of flying. :friends:

I enjoyed flying it in the old IL-2 1946

In the original poll I voted for the P-39, not P-40.

I have bought everything the Devs have put out and would love to add the P-39. I just hope it's not the stock version, but the Russian mod.

I would like the P-39 it would be effective against light ground targets too.

Indeed it was. I loved taking out a convoy with that heavy Russian gun.

that heavy Russian gun.

One or two accurate rounds from that potato cannon was usually enough to destroy a fighter in the original. Was one of my favorite planes.

Not as a collector plane.
P-39 was a significant plane for some areas.
Collector planes should be those not everybody will buy. For me a shining example of collector plane is Ju 52, but definitelly not Airacobra.

P-39 and IAR-80 would make a good collector combo no?

it has a nasty spin

That and the A-20/DB-7 Havoc/Boston would make a perfect Fighter/Bomber collector set to appeal to our Western players.

P-39 is an awesome aircraft, and the Big Gun really made short work of just about anything in old 1946.  Love to see it ingame.

Haha. Those Flatspins were pretty horrible, though. Once in it, it`s time to bail and fast.  If anyone hates the P-39, it`s likely cos of that.

The 37mm, 2x.50s and 4x .30s was actually on all models through N.  The Q series introduced the two wing .50s in place of the four wing .30s.  You're right about the Russians removing all wing guns.  The N model introduced the 139 inch diameter hydraulic prop and the -85 engine (all previous models had a 125 inch prop either electric or hydraulic) and it had a noticeable negative effect on directional stability but was considered tolerable.  When the fourth blade was added (still 139 inch) on the Q-21/25 the yet additional loss of directional stability was deemed worse than the positive affects of a slightly forward move of the empty weight CG (to improve spin characteristics) and the very slight (officially ZERO) increase in climb so US aircraft began reverting back to three blade props in the field as propellers became available and on the assembly line with the Q-30.  I don't know what the Russian response was regarding the four-blade.  As far as "they say it effected the rate of roll" that would be ->Roll Inertia<-, not sustained roll and it isn't modeled*.

* I understand this is a minority opinion.  lol

Yes I realized after I posted it, and just thought no one would notice hahahaha

Maybe we could have the 37mm and .50s as unlocks? That way we get 20mm and .30s option :)

Soviet pilots created a funny song about P-39:

"Нам друзья американцы

Подарили самолёт

В попу двигатель засунут

И костыль наоборот."

"Our american friends

Gifted us an aircraft

It has engine in the a#s

And tail wheel in the wrong place".

Pretty sure English song lyrics also lose a lot of lyrical qualities when translated to Russian.... ;)

Or the D-1 (they had the 20mm).  At least one D-1 was sent to Russia, although it(they) could very likely have been refit with the 37 as the Russians seemed to prefer it.
