Horrible frametimes after clean W10 install

Hi everyone,

I need some help to troubleshoot some issues I'm getting after making a clean W10 install last week. It's the W10 anniversary edition with the latest drivers for all my components.

Since then, IL2 has been really choppy. I was monitoring CPU RAM and GPU usage and they were all very low, (20% CPU with one core in high usage, and 20% for each GPU). Framerate was mediocre (between 30 and 60, sitting on 45 most of the time).

I finally looked at the Frametimes (not the same as framerates) and I found why the game has been feeling so choppy: the frametimes are through the roof, usually around 50 but with plenty of spikes over 100, and reaching more than 500 (see pic).

I'm going to roll back to older Nvidia drivers but is there anything I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance!

Update:

Tried using single GPU and no luck

Maybe check NVidia control panel, what are the power settings used for the game. Just make sure it's not using some power-saving mode.

Thanks coconut. Unfortunately I already had the setting in maximum performance.

I'm gonna try reinstalling BOS and if that doesnt work then reinstalling older drivers.

Interestingly I checked the Steam cache and there were two missing files but that didnt fix anything.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the game worked, just in case anyone has a similar experience.

How do you do the uninstall

IIRC there is uninstall.exe somewhere in folder with other *. exe.

I was using the Steam version, so just delete local files option in steam.

It looks like the latest Nvidia drivers (372.54) are garbage, I just went back to the previous ones.

The frametimes are still relatively high (30 to 50). Anyone can share theirs just to compare?

I hope DX11 can address that.

After removing the mediator for Reshade the game is running much smoother.

i was using a different version than before.

UPDATE:

I fixed it. I'm not sure which of the options did the trick, since now that it's been fixed I'm not going to touch it, but this is what I did:

  • Disable Hyperthreading on my BIOS. I have plenty of cores to run anything.
  • Tweaked the settings in the monitor OSD. Optimized for low latency, "game mode" and removed all power saving features.

Posted this here just in case someone has the same issues in the future.

i have 30-60 and its really bad for a multiplayer game on WOL, its not relatively high its just bad

how much fps do you have in air combat close to the ground on summer maps WOL when online is high? (>70 players)

What are your specs Jade_Monkey?

GTX 1070 OC and i5 4690K @ 4.5GHz here and up around 1,000 meters I can get 100+ FPS all day long but throw in large numbers of AI planes or even attacking ground forces that number goes way down to 45-50FPS... It's so annoying!

I've literally tried everything to resolve this issue but apparently the game engine is just horribly optimized. I really wish they would work on this unless they plan on resolving it by introducing DX11. Speaking of which, has there been any further news on its implementation?

Hi jade monkey,

I followed your advice and disabled hyper threading in the BIOS. BOS and ROF is running like an Olympian.

Thanking you

haha well i dont have hyper threading on my CPU to turn it off such a shame

Are there any sims that take advantage of hyperthreading? All I do on my PC is flight sims mainly so if its best to turn it off maybe I will...

Looks that no. Very few "AAA Next Gen" - category in what no one Flight Sim fit -  use HT,  and on average the gain is ~2%. But HT can hurt more significantly the performance in some games with old engines.

Until now Hyperthreading for games is marketing for players spend more. :)
