I could use some ideas for ground units in PWCG.

The units available right now are:

Troop Concentration = a mix of stationary infantry units.

Assault/Defense =  infantry units engaged in combat

Artillery Battery

Barges (stationary)

Vehicle convoy

Train

AAA units

How to liven up the ground without killing performance?  One thing I could do is stage small, random battles.  The other is to make the assault/defense scenarios larger.  More ground convoys and trains?  Something completely different?

No promises or timelines, but as most of you know, if somebody floats a good idea I get it in eventually.

I have read in several books of bottle necks at bridges where both sides had armour and vehicles banked up and amassed around the bridge waiting their turn to cross. That would make a very juicy target indeed for dive bombing and straffing.

yes or troops waiting at railroad stations?

train yards, ect, ect.

or historical key battle sites, i.e. Mamayev, grain mill, docks.

Dont have to be huge troop mass either. just a small concentration as representation.

Perhaps buildings that fire machine gunsm to simulate strongholds like Pavlov's House?

Have you checked coconut's solution for controlling what is spawned in game? http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/21865-proximity-vs-check-zone/?p=347379

I already do something similar.  Units are only on the map based on proximity to some type of air activity.  The problem is how many things can a system take at once?  If I create a battle, can I put 100 tanks on the ground?

Infantry.  Buildings that fire to simulate strong points.  All good ideas, but do they exist?  I looked through the units available in the ME and did not see anything like this.
