No aircarft icon on map.

When my friend tries to bring up his map whether it be his mini-map or his tactical map there are no icons representing his own aircraft but there are icons representing other players. This makes it very difficult for him to pinpoint his actual location on the map.  Is this a bug or is he missing an option somewhere?  I don't have this issue so it's hard for me to help him out.  Basically he's missing the little black silhouette icon for his own aircraft on all map modes.  I've attached an image of his minimap.

So. It turns out my friend and I didn't know about the instruments button. "i" turns on and off the instruments and, of course, removes the silhouette from the map.  That's the answer.
