Dakpilot Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 For those who were thinking about doing the free upgrade you have two days left... Thereafter you will have to pay, First big 'anniversary' service pack to be deployed on Aug 2 many do not want to which is fine, but if you were intending to you may kick yourself next week when faced with $100 + option Cheers Dakpilot
TP_Silk Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 (edited) If you want to use the tool to create a USB installation media you will need an 8GB USB stick. It won't take all of that, but it is more than 4GB. I personally recommend this method as you can perform a clean install after you've done the upgrade. Upgrades are always messy and prone to future failures in my experience. https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 Edited July 27, 2016 by Silk
SYN_Mike77 Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Yeah, I'm still on the fence. Windows 7 has been pretty good but I've had to turn off the auto updater and even when I try to manually update it just spins and spins and eats up computing power. Should I pull the trigger? I'm worried that an update to a computer built for 7 won't really work that well. If you want to use the tool to create a USB installation media you will need an 8GB USB stick. It won't take all of that, but it is more than 4GB. I personally recommend this method as you can perform a clean install after you've done the upgrade. Upgrades are always messy and prone to future failures in my experience. So right now I can download it to an 8 gig stick and then upgrade at my timing?
TP_Silk Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 (edited) Mike - the general rule of thumb is that if it will run Win7 then it will likely run Win10. The only grey area is if you have an older Win7 PC that may have some hardware for which it is difficult to find current drivers, but Win10 does fairly well usually at sorting that kind of thing out. Also in answer to your question, the free upgrade offer runs out in a couple of days, so not really unless you wanted to download the ISO to get ready then pay for a license key later. Easiest way of thinking of it is that it is the actual upgrade rights that will cease to be on the free offer on 29th Edited July 27, 2016 by Silk 1
Sokol1 Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 (edited) When Win10 was released I did a try using a Virtual HD, work well, but find interface a little cumbersome/restrictive relative to Win7 and don't see any real advantage, so forget. Recently, with MS insistent reminder and as my Win7/64 install last more than 2 years, so a new install will be welcome, I decided do the Win10 upgrade. And all work well, Arma3, DCS, BoS, CloD... don't need do nothing to run. In Arma3 the FPS became better. Only in CloD the joy and pedal assume inverted ID, but this was because days before I have changed the pedal priority in Games Controllers to test something in Arma3 and forget. Solve this was just matter of unplug the pedal and in Win10 "Printer and Devices" remove the pedal, restart Windows and pedal assume the old ID (secondary device). If latter I get boring, just format and install Win7 again, but for now I am satisfied. Edited July 27, 2016 by Sokol1
Brano Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 I go now for few beers'n'shots to gain courage and then I will most probably pull the trigger. Does the installation require my complete presence or I can get some microsleep here and there? :D
Geleitzug Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Does the upgrade to Windows 10 show any significant improvement regarding the performance of BoS ? As I'm still afraid of doing that upgrade since I'm running soft-/ and hardware that might not be 100% Windows 10 compatible, I would really appreciate to know whether it would be really worth it in terms of gaming performance...
dburne Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 (edited) I took advantage of the free upgrade last Dec, and have been well pleased with Win 10. Have not had any issues with my games, performance was at least as good if not maybe a little better than in Win 8.1. Couple of suggestions would mention. 1: Check for latest Win 10 drivers for all your hardware devices, make sure they are available for all your devices. Go ahead and download them and have available to install after the upgrade. 2: Run the Win 10 compatibility checker, it will analyze the programs you have installed and advise if any are incompatible with Win 10. Lastly, if you have imaging software image your complete system and save to an external drive to have if needed. Alternative, the Windows 10 Upgrade does also save your existing Windows install and moves it to a Windows.Old file. You can give Win 10 a test run and have the option to roll back to your previous version if necessary, as long as you don't delete that windows.old file. If your coming from Windows 7, well it is quite a change and will take some getting used to. Once you get fairly acclimated to it, it is pretty good. Coming from Win 8 or 8.1, it will look more familiar to you . Still has the metro apps, but the start menu resembles more the traditional start menu than it did in Win 8. I will say, after 6 months of regular use, I would not want to go back to any previous versions. Does the upgrade to Windows 10 show any significant improvement regarding the performance of BoS ? It would be a very subtle improvement, maybe not even noticeable. You would probably notice more in desktop performance, boot time, etc... Edited July 27, 2016 by dburne
Spinnetti Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 I did the free upgrade some time ago, and now its asking for activation.... maybe not free after all?
Lusekofte Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 I am facing a expensive upgrade, witch means I need to beg Microsoft to reuse my windows (I hate to do that), or buying a new PC , so I am fine with Win7 until then. I will be buying win 10 for the new one, even you still got the chance getting 7 . Mostly because I think DX 12 is the way to go, it seems like that version can really exploit multicore the best. At some point I think I will invest in VR , so I am position myself for just that
kestrel79 Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Gonna stick with W7 for now. My motherboard is over 5 years old and has no driver support for W10 at all, so if I would upgrade I think a lot of PC drivers wouldn't work and I don't want to risk it. I'll just buy the disk of W10 when I build my new PC down the road...but for now sticking with W7
SYN_Mike77 Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 I bit the bullet and upgraded to Windows 10. For the first couple of days everything was fine. Then today, I was flying online in the DED expert server when I received a WHEA uncorrectable error. Since then I cannot get my computer to get to the Windows start screen. When I hit power I get the motherboard splash screen and then a black screen, sometimes with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. What may be most concerning is that the hard drive accessing light does not light up or blink as it usually did on start up. Any ideas? Has Windows 10 killed my computer?

Has Windows 10 killed your computer? Unlikely. You could be having a disk issue or any plethora of other hardware issues - the timing is merely convenient. Using something like BlueScreenView will help you derive a more accurate determination of the issue but the Windows 10 sky isn't falling. Edited August 5, 2016 by Space_Ghost
SYN_Mike77 Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 How can I run a diagnostic if I can't get into windows in safe mode or any mode. All I get is a black screen. If I hit delete I can get to the bios page but I can not navigate that page. The mouse nor any keyboard cursors work.

Many, many options - with that said, if your keyboard isn't working you could have a board fault too. WHEA is a generic Windows detected hardware fault error and it isn't going to tell you much if you can't find a way to read the dump.
