Exposed Metal

What do you do to create a bare metal look in this game like for use on the Mig-3's nose? I made an attempt but it came out looking very matte. Is there a way to make it more reflective?

As far as I discovered there is no "straight" way to make bare metall surface in BoS like, for example, in RoF where you can set exact shade of black in alpha channel and in game skin looks metallic.

So, the only way is try and fail and try again. You can open the skin you like ( Bionic's MiG, for example) to check what designer's tricks he used. The "visible" part of the skin and the alpha channel both are important to cheat imperfectnes of BoS visual engine.

As Samson stated the engine is not capable of showing 'true' bare metal.

There are some great tutorial posts about custom Alpha Channels.

I think the closest you would get would be to use a metallic silver paint and messing with the reflectiveness of the skin in the Alpha.

How you go about that probably depends on what program you are using.

Perhaps try searching for youtube videos for specific programs?

"Metal finish in photoshop" - for example.

I have not had a go at it myself, but a bare metal P-40 might be sweet.

As other's said the reflection shader is very limited and does not model shiny bare metal well. You can try a mix of Alpha channel tweaking as well as diffuse texture techniqus to make it seem like bare metal (although it physically isn't).

For the diffuse textureing technique you can check out this guide: http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Knowledge_Base&op=show&kid=484

For the alpha channel you can look up my thread (usefull for photoshop users too): http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/15420-custom-alpha-channel-tutorial-gimp-advanced-skinners/

For shiny bare metal ~ 60 white value seems suitable.
