Bearfoot Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 Love the 3D view on the start screen! Is there a key or guide to all the parts we can see is such great detail? E.g., the little tear drop shaped capsule hanging under the wing of a Bf-109 etc.?
[APAF]VR_Spartan85 Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 You mean having a sort of Mechanic view of the aircraft and interactive areas, ie; cowling open with engine exposed, gun covers off for ammo belts, or even an x-ray view of the whole thing? I think that would be cool. Nice to show off a bit of the 3d artist work.
69th_chuter Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 Yeah, that would be neat. I'm not sure I would use it but it would still be great. That "little tear drop shaped capsule hanging under the wing" is, if I'm understanding your question, is the aileron mass balance weight. These are used to increase the aileron's oscillation frequency. In other words, they prevent flutter. They can also be used (internally) on fixed flying surfaces, the A320 has a very lightweight carbon fiber horizontal stabilizer that uses two weight blocks bolted inside each stab tip which keeps the stab tips from bouncing up and down like a diving board.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 There is a way to do that, sort of. Go to the Il-2 folder on your PC, find the bin folder and open viewer.exe. Choose a model of aircraft on the top left then clock the play button to get the light how you want it. Use the mouse (both buttons and mouse wheel) and the zoom in/out button to look around and inside the aircraft. Just a heads-up, as expected most of the aircraft internals are simplified since they are rarely if ever exposed.

The 3D models here look good and detailed, like the in-game models, but not as good and detailed as the start-up screen. I guess the latter are different?

Thanks! I *think* that is what I am talking about. I cannot get a screenshot of the start-up screen I to confirm. But what you say makes sense in terms of function, and when I search for images of "Bf-109 aileron balance weight", this image shows up and that's pretty much what I mean: http://109lair.hobbyvista.com/walkaround/610937/610937.24.jpg A key to all those delicious little details --- even just the external ones would be great (like: here is the oil radiator grating; there is the pitot tube; this bulge over here is for the cannon drum, this is where the dilithium crystals go, etc.)
