Sennpaiser Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 For those unfamiliar 3D sound is recreating what humans actually hear (sound distance between head, ear shape, location of sound below and above) This for example would allow you to with a pair of stereo headphones hear if a plane is above or below you (I know it's kind of hard to hear over your engine, but it would give the game some added realism) In a previous IL-2 it had EAX support so you could use a soundcard with EAX to process the 3D sound and do many effects that aren't possible on other sound engines. If you want to hear a demo of 3D sound use some stereo headphones and look up EAX (and just for fun you can look up virtual barbershop which is a cool way of recording sound to sound scarily natural)
216th_Jordan Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 This game has 3-D sound. Turn you head in the cockpit and you will hear depending on the position of your head.
Dakpilot Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 (edited) I think Senn is referring to Binaural Audio https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binaural_recording (probably need to use headphones Am sure this has been, or is planned to be used in Games cant remember where I read about it Cheers Dakpilot Edited July 4, 2016 by Dakpilot

And the game sounds pretty much in 3D to me when I fly it.
KoN_ Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 (edited) Engines too loud cant hear anyone speak on teamspeak , turn down this and that , yes i know about mixer ect ect ,but this is still an issue , if i have the in game sound down in windows , how can i hear anything else. The Engines are way too loud and need to be toned down a bit ` so we can hear people talk and hear hit sounds and effects . And when you take new aircraft re-spawn the sounds are back up on engines its weird . Some of us tonight were down to two in game on the sound volume` so that we can hear people speak . : Edited July 8, 2016 by II./JG77_Con

I have my sound on 2 when flying online otherwise I can`t hear what anyone says. Not sure what that`s got to do with the 3D thing though, it`s a differnet issue, isn`t it?
216th_Jordan Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I've just set my TS in and output to my headphones only and the rest to my hifi system. feels very immersive also.
Dakpilot Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Or you can put TS on an 'earbud' underneath headphones if you use them Cheers Dakpilot

You've been banging on about binaural audio since 1946. That's some nice trolling [Tips fedora]

For Teamspeak you can actually get a plugin that lowers the game sound when people talk, I use it and it works great. That way the sound runs 100% other times. As for DirectSound3D, that is Microsoft's fault. They got rid of that with the move to Vista, and subsequently 7, 10, etc. There is no longer direct access to the sound layer, so EAX doesn't work anymore. Soundblaster/Creative use ALChemy for older games to that use EAX by changing EAX calls into OpenAL. This title uses FMOD for it's sound API, though, which does incorporate 3D audio but not EAX. Yes i agree with you , So how come i don`t get this in Rise of Flight in a open cockpit ...???
SharpeXB Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 I'm using 7.1 headphones and the sound imaging is great. I'm floating down in my chute listening to all the aircraft whoosh by There's a significant improvement between 7.1 and 2.0 headphones.
Dakpilot Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Dolby Atmos is the new 'next big thing' ..9.1 is old hat http://www.dolby.com/us/en/technologies/cinema/dolby-atmos.html Cheers Dakpilot
Dakpilot Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I think you missed the 'concept' of Atmos, not using channels i.e. 27.2 Cheers Dakpilot "Traditional surround soundtracks confine all sounds to a small set of channels that can deliver sound to you from only a few perceived angles. They cannot put sound above you. Further, sounds exist only as part of a channel mix. If one sound is emphasized in a traditional mix, another must be diminished. In Dolby Atmos, by contrast, sound can be freed from channels. It enables artists to treat specific sounds as individual entities, called audio objects. These can be precisely placed and moved by the soundtrack creator anywhere in the cinema's three-dimensional space—they are not confined to specific channels—though the artist can continue to use channel capabilities as desired. The Dolby Atmos cinema processor then determines which of a cinema's huge array of front, back, side, and overhead speakers it will use to recreate this lifelike movement
Dakpilot Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 You asked if 9.1 is out yet I linked the tech that has replaced it I am no expert on it.....google is your friend or even your local dealer to experience Dolby Atmos I believe Binaural Audio has to be recorded in a very specific way, but this article is quite enlightening http://www.theverge.com/2015/2/12/8021733/3d-audio-3dio-binaural-immersive-vr-sound-times-square-new-york Cheers Dakpilot
SharpeXB Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Even 7.1 never really took off in home theater. The bottom line is its better to spend money on 6 better speakers than 8. Blu-ray discs, the only source for master quality audio are nearly all in 5.1 DTS There are lots of 7.1 receivers but very little actual 7.1 content.
