I like making model aircraft, been nuts about aircraft since I can remember, I used to make plastic kits and balsa flying models, and I also did some 3d modelling and created a mod for a sim.

Posted (edited)

I have made a few static models, but that's not really my thing, but I've been heavily involved with remote control models since my childhood.

I fly powered fixed wings, sailplanes, 3D aerobats, some helis and professionally fly multirotor VTOL systems used for various  R&D ventures.

Good thread. We need more contributors.

Has anyone built the 1/24 Airfix FW190A?

It's on sale in model zone right now, wondering if it's worth it.

Posted

Hi Danjama,I made the FW190 many years ago,if memory serves,i had some fit issues with the engine and the cowlings,I have an unbuilt one in the stash and if i ever get round to building the thing,I think i will either opt for engine on display or closed in,apart from that,i remember it being a pretty smart kit,if its a good price,i would go for it!

Posted

I have done model kits since i was kid, probably 100+, but lost most of them when my parents divorced. I still make them every now and then but a lot slower pace, say 1 model per 2 years. I have 4 109's (1:24/1:32), 2 King Tigers, couple of BMW's under work at the moment.

Posted

I used to build a lot of modelkits when I was younger. Lots of 1/72-scale WWII-birds, but during the later parts of my "career" I mostly built dioramas with groundvehicles in 1/35, where the landscape was made using plaster and paper-mache, and then painted and furnished with grass (same stuff that most people that do large-scale model-train sets use) and scratch-built trees/bushes made out of steel wire and strips of plastic.

Been planning to take things back up, but currently don't have the space for it. A 1/35-scale diorama easily becomes quite large...

Lets see some piccys! Will start the ball rolling.

This is the ancient Revell 1/32nd scale Me109F after a fair bit of work, included adding detail and lengthening the fuselage,The figure is the Ultracast Werner Molders figure.

This is the Squadron Albatros,a 1/32nd roden kit that came with lots of goodies, including the Boelke figure.

Please note how I have tried to join in with the spirit of this new forum by including both WW1 and WW2 subjects, therefore removing any hint of bias  ;)

Damn, carts! Those are EXCELLENT!

Loove that Alby!  May have to get me one.

Been many years since I did any scale modeling.

Last thing I built was the USS Constitution, had taken me many many hours. Was up to rigging the whole thing when a typical Queensland wind storm blew through, a gust coming in through the window, blowing the blinds and knocking the ship to the floor, smashing it beyond the point that I had the sanity to recover from. Was heartbroken.  I still have it and the pieces, occasionally think of trying to restore it, but the amount of work needed is beyond me atm.

When I was very little, my cousin had a heap of 1/72 stuff hanging from his bedroom seiling, dozens of them. That got me into it. Done aircraft, tanks and some cars. The more I get back into flight simming the more I want to get me a new kit, thinking a BF109 perhaps, never made one and only really just started to fly them in game.

Any one know of a good IL2 kit? They are rare as hen's teeth down under.

I enjoyed this one about five years ago. I think the original manufacturer went under or was bought out. Under the new name this was was released in 2011. I'm 99.44% sure this is the same kit. Even the part numbers are the same. I remember building the kit and wondering how they came up with th numbeing system for their parts. I specifically remember the throttle handle being #86. Sadly, I liked the original box cover art.

All the parts went together quite well, though I did have a time figuring out their wing assembly. Not much flash at all so trimming and sanding were minimal. Instructions were complete enough that you didn't get lost. It was my first model after a 30sumpthin long sabatical. Not a bad first kit. It's 1:48th scale BTW.

Looks good. Site also has a M3 variant, but shame both sold out. Might be able to source that Airfix one with a bit of google fu however.

Cheers

Really good stuff there! I love the paintjob on that 109! Airbrush I take it?

I'm into small-scale armor modelling instead of aircraft. For some reason tanks and other ground vehicles are better for my hamfisted abilities in weathering. Even in 1/72 scale. :D

Just some of them ... my stash of yet unbuilt models is quite full. Just gotta find time and energy to do some modelling which was lacking of late (the usual "year's end is near so we can all go crazy" type of insanity at work).

Me too.. my first basla plane was a flying wing that too a .050 engine.. I think it was called the blue devil or something like that.. My next one was a Fokker D-7. I always had a thing for Mustangs.. and my mother was the first person to tell me about The Airmen.. before they were known  as Tuskegee Airmen.. At that time though there were not many books about them out..  I also used to watch BSS religiously..

Well if you like balsa stuff have you checked these 2 sites, absolutely stacked with free downloadable plans for free flight and RC models, some of the scale stuff looks really good, you have to register with Hippocketaeronautics.com

Fantastic work here. Put's mine to shame. I've been working on a 1:24 scale Mustang for about 2 years. Wife bought me a 1:24 scale Hurricane for Christmas too. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of aftermarket kits or decals for the Hurricane though.

I love these threads. I don't model myself but always enjoy looking at others' work.

Who was that guy at Ubi who did those amazing builds? Name's on the tip of my tongue. He was working on a DAF Hurricane and a PT boat last I remember.

Buglord - nice models, love the subjects you've chosen. How many decals on that F15?

That was JG52  I seem to remember,he did a superlative Tiger Tank  and a stunning P-47,Cracking bloke as well.

Hi all. I'm new to the forum but do have a passion for all things WWI and WWII. I build 1/48th scale WWI aircraft and some 1/32, 1/35 and 1/48 scale WWII aircraft, resin and plastic. Mt interests have shifted greatly over the past years to WWI through WWI armor and other softskins, especially Axis and Russian.  I do build some Allied stuff but there is just so much more variety and unusual subjects for the sides that weren't quite so standardized.

I also like computer gaming a lot and really miss the era of WWII based shooters like the original Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Brothers in Arms, etc. series. While the flash and awesome factor of the modern combat games are impressive, there's something more up close and personal in the WWII era stuff. I hold the same thoughts toward flight sims. Give me a stick and a propeller, gun sights, and  seat of the pants flying skill over busy displays, computer controls, and weapons that do all the fighting by computer. I have a few jet sims and they just don't do it for me. Sure they wreak massive destruction but there's a huge difference between dropping some bombs with a P-47 and seeing the smoke plumes through the cockpit and feeling the concussion than screaming across the sky so fast that the plane is long gone before its payoad dtonates.

I've looked in vain for that thread myself. Anyone remember it?

As for nice builds, whenever I get the urge, I have a look at what this chap built (which quickly tells me to go have a life in stead):

Superb work on the dio and especially the B/W pic.  Makes me very grateful for the Afrika maps in Il-2:1946 as well as the tropicalised versions of bf 109s in HSFX.

Cheers - I wish I had the time to build a diorama. Once I get around to it I'll be building some more PPI Jeeps and adding something like an AB 41 or 43 armoured car.

Was in the process of converting an A-3 to an A-4/R1.

Incidentally that particular 109 served at Stalingrad if I am not mistaken
