What to expect from this game

Norton actually has very good live support for these kind of issues, at least it did when i used Norton a couple of years ago...

Does Norton show up in your system tray? (Lower right corner of your screen). Right click on Norton and does it say in the drop down menu something like disable Norton anti virus or something? If so click on it. It will probably ask you how many minutes/hours you want to disable it. Choose an hour or so and then try again to download the installer. Once you're done installing the game activate Norton again with the same steps as above. I hope this helps.

It says I can turn on Silent Mode, unsure of what that does. I will post here later and tell you if it works :).

EDIT: I'm going to try disabling my firewall, and then my auto-protect, then both, then if not, I'm pretty much screwed until I get a new computer :(.

Well, if you have some Warthunder "mouse aim" experience will don't have problem to "fly-by-mouse" in BoS.

try and is easy - although for me, used to joystick, awkward.  :)

You can try the Campaign in NORMAL mode in this way.

But if you want fly online in MP, get a joystick ASAP and learn to fly correctly.

Just don't buy - even for 29,99$ or less -  a joystick that use potentiometers in X, Y axis.

Don't you have a friend or family member that is a bit of a computer geek? Maybe try to lure that person out of his man cave to help you out.  :)

Does using the unlock button once you buy the "gold"/premium bundle automatically unlock everything in campaign or multiplayer or both?

OK I hope that works then.

I managed to get it working. Now to deal with the sub-200kb/s DL speed =/

That is great news! 200kb/s ouch... I'm glad that I live in Europe.  ;)

That's good news. What's the difference between a stock/unupgraded aircraft and a full unlocked/upgraded aircraft for bombers, attackers and fighters?

I was getting 300kb/s+ earlier, no idea why it decreased to below 200kb/s. Nothing else using the internet I'm using AFAIK.

Ok... It decreased from ~600kb/s to ~170kb/s to 0.03kb/s... How do I fix this so it's at a stable and good kb/s?

EDIT: It's jumping from ~150kb/s to 14kb/s to 0.03kb/s...

Extra (larger) bombs, different caliber guns/canons, rear gunner unlock, extra armored glass etc. etc.

I don't know mate. I have the Steam version of the game, so it downloads directly from the Steam servers for me.

Not true, I have been flying here in BoS/BoM for months without trackir with simple setup of joystick in right hand and mouse in left to look around. And it worked more than fine. Sure its not as good as track ir, but he will have no issues flying with mouse in his left hand.

Agree! I tried TiR, didn't like it, sent it back. I use mouse to look around like Hiro. No problem.

Oh, so you can unlock more guns/better guns, better bombs, more armour, etc.

Do you unlock performance upgrades as well? That's what I hate most in games, were you can get an utter PoS when you first unlock it.

EDIT: I wonder if I can download the game from Steam, or of I habe to buy it again to download it from there since steams is miles faster.

So mouse + joystick combo works effectively? I'm mediocre at multi tasking, and reckon it will be interesting taking on that. Joystick in my left hand, and mouse/view in m right hand would seem comfortable. I had a joystick few years ago, but I think I lost it :(.

Well better is subjective. A larger caliber gun is also heavier, so you suffer a bit in performance for instance.

No, no performance upgrades, so that's good.

Well... if you bought the game from this site then you're stuck with the launcher you're downloading now.

It went past 1MB/S and stayed there for a few minutes xD. 342Mb downloaded... and back to sub-par (and this is an Australia talking here) internet... ~130kb/s...

Again.

So basically everything done to your plane, even adding a slightly better cannon (e.g. Bf 109 F-2 replacing the 15mm with the 20mm) affects performance, and is the difference in performance massive or small, or does it depend on the upgrade? I.e. bomb load 4x 250kg weigh more then 8x 100kg (as an example), and horribly decrease performance vs. adding an extra gun or 2 that decrease performance ever so slightly.

Hah well there are people playing this game that are way more knowledgeable than me (understatement) but I can tell you that today I upgraded to deluxe edition and this morning I for the first time flew out with larger bombs on the IL-2 than I'm usually used to and it ended in disaster right after take off. I stalled due to underestimating the extra weight (doh!).

About the guns is obviously less noticeable, but because I'm very much in a learning stage I can't tell you exactly how much. Still exploring the limits of the aircrafts.

Thanks for helping so far :). I will test the limits of aircraft (with a joystick if I get one) if I can actually take off, and not crash 'n' burn.

The unlocks here are not the kind of performance upgrades you may have experienced in other games. These are modifications that have specific purposes and the biggest case in point of them is that despite having access to the unlocks, there are plenty of times where I go with the stock version with no modifications.

The IL-2, model 1942 comes with an optional rear turret or larger bomb/rocket combinations but these options all weigh more and come with penalties to performance. The Bf109F-4 and G-2 both come with optional MG151/20 underwing gun pods. These add considerably to the weight of fire from the aircraft but they have drag and weight penalties that affect your top speed, climb, roll rate, and turn rate.

So nearly all of them come with a trade-off and virtually none are objectively better across the board. There's no super engine boost unlock :)

Now you see if you were here in your sister Commonwealth country of Canada here you would be downloading at a minimum of 4mb/sec.

I can barely take off sometimes with a joystick I can't imagine not having one.

Aussie internet is a roller coaster. Sometimes very slow, other times usable.

We have just terrible Internet. I guess I could wait for NBN, but their putting it in all the rural places first.

Essentially. Unlocks are for different loadouts (cannons, bombs, rockets) but also for things like extra armor plates, or even remove the armor for greater visibility.

Depending on your objective you should have a different loadout.

Most additional items will add weight at the cost of speed or maneuverability.

Some aircraft also have unlocks that lighten them for improved performance (like the P-40, where you can remove two of the machine guns, leaving four, or some Bf-109s where you can remove the armoured headrest) :)

I've now dowbloaded the game so I will test it later if my computer can handle it. I did about a 5 minute campaign mission, and it worked alright, but I need a joystick.

And when you remove the headrest, I'm guessing your pilot is more easily killed?

Which version of norton? My 360 does not interfere with any of the BOS/BOM downloads. I can check settings when I get home in the am tomorrow. I probably put the .exe in an exceptions folder early on.

I fixed it up, and 360. I disabled it for 15 minutes to allow me to download the launcher. It was fine once it came back on and I was downloading the actual game client.

Oh, and this game runs pretty awfully on my rig, and without a joystick. I need a new computer and a joystick ASAP.

It's probably my CPU bottlenecking it as this game is very CPU intensive with the physics + DirectX 9.

Perhaps I should also get more RAM as well, or if needs be, an entirely new rig.

A decent Quad core (i5 or maybe something from AMD, though I dont know how those perform) and 8 GB RAM should be enough, I'm running similar setup and only thing that needs upgrade is GPU since GTX 660 cant handle well most of the titles this days. In case of GPU you could try with AMD RX 480 which is quite affordable and has fine performance, just wait for custom constructions as there are issues with reference models.

I could also wait for the GTX 1060 that is supposed to come out on the 7th of July. I'm going to run 16GB of RAM as I do pull other tasks, such as chrome, Spotify, sometimes listening to TS, some other stuff as well. The I7 6700 is also an excellent card that isn't that much more expensive then the i5 6600(K), and seems much, much better.

Frequently yes, but there are also things like canopy modifications and radio mast modifications (RPK-10) which sometimes are preference/use based.

Everything is historical. These are all either factory or field modifications that were actually used although a few of them are on the rarer side.

The bottom line is that you can have no unlocks and do quite well in all modes and in many cases you may decide that you don't need any of them and its better off to go with the default setup. Depending on the aircraft in question, there are times where I need absolutely no unlocks to accomplish my mission and that is the preferable configuration. Sometimes I may end up taking quite a few different options - its highly situational and dependent on what your mission objective is.

Yes, generally speaking modifications dont improve aircraft performance or like in war thunder serve to fix the "stock" machine, but rather improve one area at the cost of other - like 109 gunpods, you gain firepower at the expense of flight performance and characteristics. And as said above, they all are historical and backed up by sources.

Well, if you can afford top Intels then sure, go for them. Though for general use AMD seems to be as good, only loosing when its competing against top models (which come with top price), but that is somewhat changing with Dx12. I've seen FX 9590 getting close to skylake i7 6700k in Dx 12 environment, and AMD comes at much lower prices on average.

Also, will see how 1060 performs :)

The T16000 is a great starter joystick (it's what I have now)  I too am looking to upgrade to the Gladiator and noticed that it is currently now on sale via Amazon!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G6GT49O/ref=s9_simh_gw_g63_i1_r?ie=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=&pf_rd_r=NRQK4KC22V9FXG3FF14G&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=6aad23bd-3035-4a40-b691-0eefb1a18396&pf_rd_i=desktop

The T16000 is about half the cost though so I would suggest put your money into the box upgrades before you start throwing mega money at the input gear. (after you buy a T16000 or similar!)

When considering head tracking, realize the advantage isn't just being able to look around, it's the six-degrees of motion that allows you to lean and look around obstructions like the canopy frames. And besides TrackIR there are a number of free do-it-yourself solutions such as Opentrack and Facetracknoir.

Yes....too add to what Sharpe says. If you are a ground pounder it is very helpful to find small targets by just leaning. Also I have spotted many an enemy on my tail thanks to track having 6dof

just make your own head-tracking device (i use Freetrack myself) using an inexpensive PS3 camera a couple of dollars and some free time :D

im pretty sure i posted a tutorial on these forums on how to make it.... now only if i could find it

Wow, really? Although I think I might go with Intel for now, maybe as DirectX 11 is right around the corner for BoS/BoM.

I use my joystick (T-16000M) with left hand and mouse in my right, and I like it. I'm right-handed for everything in life except flying so it's a very natural setup.

I have head movements mapped to the hat switch on top of the stick so I have basically all the functionality of head tracking except for when I need to type on the keyboard :)

Ah, thanks again. It's good to know that you don't need to buy $200 AUD+ TrackIR, and can use a mouse.

Or alternatively, free tracking software, or even a camera from a PS3, or something else!

Edtracker when combined with facetracknoIR seems to be a very cheap alternative that also provides 6DOF

Not tried it myself though

I use Delanclip http://www.delanengineering.com/ with Opentrack https://github.com/opentrack/opentrack/releases.

Not very expensive and works great!

I'll take a look at those later.

Also, why don't I have the golden BoS underneath my profile picture? Or is that only visible to other people?
