Shatter12 Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Hello! As I am probably getting this game tomorrow (IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad, premium pack with the 10 aircraft), what should I expect from it? I have no Pedals, TrackIR or Joystick (although I may be getting the Joystick soon) and a baddish computer (Toshiba Satelitte from ~2010/2011, 4GB DDR3 1066 MHZ, ATI Radeon HD 5000, i5 @ 2.23 GHZ, unsure of type at the moment), so what should I expect both from gameplay with a mouse, and a baddish computer, and should I just stick with IL-2/Pe-2/Ju 87s for the moment, and not even that, perhaps a rear gunner for someone! Thanks in advance
Flying_Colander Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Welcome, mate. It's a great sim and to get the best out of it you'll want a joystick for starters. Once you're hooked, you'll want to save your pennies for an improved box. Good news is $1500 buys a lot of computer these days. Go for 64bit when you make the jump. Check Gumtree and Ebay for deals on pedals, Track IR and joysticks. Also, SimHQ has a lively Swap Meet section for members. Never had a bad experience trading there. Cheers, Flying Colander
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Without a stick you might have trouble in the take-off run, although with mouse control that should work just fine. Try out the Il-2 for starters, it's very stable in the air and on the ground so taking-off, flying, shooting and landing won't be a big deal with your set up. Expect a very natural feeling of flight, and take some time to just look around and let the scenery sink in. Even at low settings this simulator looks very good, so enjoy the view! Combat also feels real and intense.

Cheers, Flying Colander I've had a bit of a findle around on aupcpartpicker (as most shop buys are more expensive and a bit worse, but better then Gaming laptops) that takes DirectX 9 into mind (as I also do currently play WT, and probably won't stop playing both IL-2: BoS/BoM and WT), so a good CPU (i7 6700), a good GPU (deciding between a 380X, 390 or 480, as somehow 480s cost $450 AUD from Mwave Australia, which is over (at least) $100 USD more then America currently does for the 8GB one, and 16GB DDRRS-2133MHZ of RAM. I probably won't go for a TrackIR nor pedals, but try and get a T16000M, or if I have enough money to blow on it, a X-55/-56. My Toshiba Satelitte luckily runs 64bit Windows 10 without to much hassle, so I think the performance will be usable at least (I know ground/take offs reduce FPS to almost half your usual FPS as the rendering takes a lot more). I think I will probably start off with playing the Ju 87 D-3, Pe-2 or IL-2 (even though I close FW 190s, they are currently underperforming and I have no joystick for fighter gameplay), or even as a rear gunner for someone. I guess it comes down to if my FPS is playable (I'll turn all visual options down to their lowest settings/off for FPS), and how hard it is with a mouse (I'm happy to play in a cockpit with a mouse, but I'm sceptical if it is playable with a joystick). Without a stick you might have trouble in the take-off run, although with mouse control that should work just fine. Combat also feels real and intense. Yea, what I'm currently looking for is a slow (not slow as in 300kmh or less, just not crazy fast), stable and good to fly plane. I guess along with the IL-2, Pe-2 and Ju 87 D-3, the He 111 H-6 is also a valid option if I take the time to side climb? Also, what is the recommended fuel load? In WT, there isn't a gauge on how much you want, but how long you want to fly for (I.e. No gallons or litres of fuel, but minutes of fuel). Does it change from plane to plane, but would 30-50% be enough? Edited July 1, 2016 by Shatter12
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 The He-111H-6 is very, very slow, but it's very pleasant to fly at the same time. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. In terms of fuel, it depends on what aircraft you're flying and what you'll be doing really. For example, the He-111 has a maximum range of 2300km, so there is no point in loading 100% fuel for a 300km round-trip bombing run. At the same time, the Pe-2 has a maximum range of about 1100km, but if you're going to spend most of the time at low altitude and at high power settings to keep a good speed for a 400km round-trip then you might want to go heavy. In fighters for example I always take a full tank because not only a long mission will drain most of it, but a fuel leak from enemy fire can also get in the way and then you need every last drop. In short, it depends! Play around and you'll find what you're most comfortable with

I guess it also depends on the settings and altitude. I think I will put 50% on the Wings of Liberty server.
seafireliv Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 For the love of Heaven, if nothing else get a joystick! You can`t fly a sim without one and even if you could, you`d lose a whole lot of the `experience`. 1
=EXPEND=Capt_Yorkshire Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Joystick and trackir are a must to get the most out of it, and don't be put off by how difficult it seems at first, also watch a lot of tutorials on youtube. Trackir is expensive so maybe look at a website called ED tracker my friends use it and highly rate it , it costs about £30 . i'm a pretty average pilot but i can show you the basics through teamspeak send me a message if your stuck
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Joystick and trackir are a must to get the most out of it, Not true, I have been flying here in BoS/BoM for months without trackir with simple setup of joystick in right hand and mouse in left to look around. And it worked more than fine. Sure its not as good as track ir, but he will have no issues flying with mouse in his left hand.
DukeMcFishy Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 (edited) I have to say that a T16000M is very good value for money. I own a X52 HOTAS, but I replaced the joystick of the X52 with the T16000M to go along with the throttle of the X52. X52 joystick is very disappointing and compared to the T16000M it is night and day. A great stick for the price you pay for it, so I would highly advice you to get one if you don't have to money for a high end HOTAS. Whatever you do don't get the X52 due to the very mediocre joystick (throttle is fine though). The price might be tempting, but it's better to save a bit more to get a better one. I have X52 Pro, throttle is good but joystick is not. I have been waiting for those VKB Gladiators to come out but there`s still nothing on their website. I think I`ll have to order something else, I`m tired to that X52 stick. It sucks. 1

That being said I just ordered this: https://flightsimcontrols.com/store/available/defender-cobra-m5-joystick-revb/ Should be a pretty decent stick for it`s price.
Dakpilot Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 You can have a surprising amount of fun flying as a gunner online or off, in IL-2, Pe-2 and Stuka and He-111 (and Ju-88) Operating the Tanks also does not require a Joystick..there is actually plenty to do until you get one Cheers Dakpilot

I have Cobra since year and no problem whatsoever. Perfect balance in price vs quality. And that heavy base just sticks the stick to the table like it was cemented. Can be used also as side weapon to crush skulls :D

He did not mention the skull crushing part though, that can be handy
Brano Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 And it looks as real thing (Su-27) not like a toy. It makes you feel the true "Slav force" :D 1
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Yeah, Cobra is a great joystick. I have it and the only thing that I'm going to replace it with will be Gladiator Pro with an idea to get extension for it, so a jump into a whole new level. So far Cobra felt nice and smooth. to be fair however, I would like to point out that at least for me twist is somewhat too light. I often happen to find myself with a rudder deflected when I did not intent to actually do so, which forces me to set a small dead zone around the center of it since I cant change spring or whatever is there that keeps the twist centered. Twist could be better. But other than that it is so far one of the best sticks, if not best, in this price range.

I needed a replacement joystick now and that is very reasonable price, 84€ with taxes and delivery to Finland. I just hope delivery won`t take very long time. Edited July 1, 2016 by Zami
Shatter12 Posted July 1, 2016 Author Posted July 1, 2016 Thanks for your help everyone . Once I can, I will buy a joystick ASAP, such as the the T16000M, and probably not the TrackIR. For looking around, I can probably look into the settings and bind it to the mouse (the looking I mean). In the mean time, do you pilot inside the cockpit or outside with the mouse? The WoL server looks like fun; do servers come default in multiplayer? Thanks in advance .

=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Well, there is outer view. Once you bail out you got plenty of time to look around For looking around, I can probably look into the settings and bind it to the mouse It should work automatically, nothing to bind, it will be working by the deafult. I would recommend if you have any secondary buttons (since I play mmos as well I have Razer Naga with 12 buttons right under my thumb) to raise and lower head, particularly raising it will help when you dive since you will have a better view for B&Z. I was flying with a mouse for almost a year, scored my first kills against Ai and real players on servers. Mouse is really not bad, you should be able to easily get used to it and get competitive.

I have a regular mouse, a scroll wheel, and a left and right click button. Without a joystick, is the mouse automatically blinded to controlling the aircraft, whereas with a joystick the mouse is automatically bound to looking around inside the cockpit, or does it have to be automatically bounded?

That was part of the benefit of a mouse; it worked much in the same way as a Track Ir, allowing you full view within your cockpit and adding to the immersion. I could not do it out side the cockpit, no way. That said, a Trackir wins since it does the same and frees up your hands and is even more immersive. Also using the mouse in the cockpit will prepare you for the day you go to TIR, if you decide to get one. Edited July 1, 2016 by seafireliv
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 I think when you open the game first time you will be asked which controls you want to use and there will be mouse aim option. With mouse only it will be used for aircraft control and looking around at the same time I think, I've used mouse aim only for testing purposes.

VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 I know a guy that flew for years in IL2 1946 using a joystick in one hand and a mouse in the other for view. He was a very good pilot who you did not want on your six. Start with a stick though, even a cheap one.

Chances of you getting a virus in the short time it takes for you to download and install the game is very minimal. You can always just make an exception in Norton for the IL2_setup_BoS.exe file once you've downloaded it, so it doesn't scan that file anymore. The launcher/installer doesn't contain a virus obviously. On how to make an exception in Norton I can't tell you exactly because my virusscanner is BitDefender and every virusscanner works a bit different. Does Norton show up in your system tray? (Lower right corner of your screen). Right click on Norton and does it say in the drop down menu something like disable Norton anti virus or something? If so click on it. It will probably ask you how many minutes/hours you want to disable it. Choose an hour or so and then try again to download the installer. Once you're done installing the game activate Norton again with the same steps as above. I hope this helps.
