How does IL2: BoS work without a joystick (aka with a mouse)

Hello, as I do not (currently) have a joystick, much less a TrackIR or medals, I was wondering people's experiences with mouses? Is it usable? Or am I better off trying to get a joystick? Thanks in advance.

If I can't, and worse comes to worse, am I able to become a rear gunner for Pe-2s, Ju 88s, Stukas etc. and use a mouse to aim and fire the Rear gun, or does that also require a joystick?

No idea how mouse work as I didn't try it out yet. I suppose it would be quite OK for bombers as you don't need to perform high aerobatics figures. But for fighters it might be a handicap. I recommend getting a stick. There are some good entry level ones in price range around 50 euros. Get one with magnetic sensors. I highly recommend VKB Cobra. Have it for one year and I'm very satisfied with what I got for the money

I have my eye on a Thrustmaster T16000M, which costs $57 AUD from EB games (right now) which is (more or less) €38.11 euros. I think I will try the game first as a bomber turret/gunner, then as bomber pilot (have my eye on the premium BoS which includes all the 8 aircraft + the La-5 and the (ableit underperforming FW 190 A-3) in the He 111 H-6 or the Pe-2, perhaps the IL-2 AM-38 or Ju 87 D-3 then the fighters, such as the La-5, and BF 109 G-2 as they seem to perform very well.

I might get a joystick however, just depends on whether or not my PC can handle it. For bomber turrets/gunners, do you use a mouse or a joystick?

For turret gunners  mouse is the best option .It is also set as default in controls.
