DD_Arthur Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 I think we've all been enjoying the wonderful night flying we've been able to do this week and I've seen lots of comments about how authentic the night sky is. If you want to check out how accurate it is or if you've ever looked up at the stars and wondered what the hell it is your looking at then check this out; http://www.stellarium.org/ It's a really nice piece of planetarium freeware I've used for some years now and really simple to use. Set your location and off you go. Or even set your location as Volgograd and use the timeshift feature to take yourself back to the winter of '42/'43 and have a wonder about the sky. 1
DD_Arthur Posted November 22, 2013 Author Posted November 22, 2013 It was those pictures that made me post Furbs!
Bando Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Thanks for that link. On a side note: I live on the island of Curacao and we had a bright star on the west side of our sky. Was obvious a planet. Thanks to this program I just learned it's Venus. Funny stuff.
FlatSpinMan Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 There's a great free iphone app called "planets" that let's you see what is what in the night sky. In 3d mode you can hold your phone up in different parts of the sky and line it up with the various stars and planets. It's really interesting and so simple to use.
arjisme Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Same kind of thing with Google Sky Map (for Android phones). Just point the phone at the part of the sky you are interested in and it moves a celestial map real time to show what you are looking at, with labels.
Belphe Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 (edited) I didn't check but going back a few years, correct night sky, star positions and moon phases based on a particular date were already present in Silent Hunter 3. I would have thought that such an important feature is a MUST in any new WWII sim. I saw Orion myself last night... Edited November 22, 2013 by Belphe
