AndyJWest Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 I managed to pull off a nice deadstick landing, after killing the engine at 4000m or so. I'll post a video later, but for now, if anyone finds themselves in the same position, here's how I did it. Canopy open (better view, but it increases drag), flaps 35 degrees, gear down, and positioned myself to line up on the runway, with plenty of spare height. Then it was just a matter of sideslipping (at 200 km/h+ for safety) to lose the excess height. I crossed the threshold a little fast, but managed to put it down on the runway ok. I went off the edge of the runway and then groundlooped somewhat at the end, but ended up with no more damage. It might be possible to control the rate of descent with flaps, but I was reluctant to use more, as it could have made the approach rather steep. If there had been any chance of not making the runway, I'd have put the gear back up and belly-landed - I suspect it might flip over landing wheels-down off the runway.
FuriousMeow Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Take off, fly a circuit around the field, skim the ground half way through the circuit destroying the engine and dead stick in - practice that and any landing is a breeze - literally because it should be done on the crosswind map.

Fifi Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 (edited) Nice vid! Just before entering landing area, you could have set full flaps down imo...anticipating the change of plane's flight course with full flaps Have yet to practice it, but in open fields!... Edited November 22, 2013 by Fifi
