Legendary strategy series from Paradox, the Hearts of Iron is getting it`s latest part tomorrow when the HoI IV is released. I have played all previous games with pleasure, particularly HoI1 and HoI2. Third game was not so good IMO but this new one seems to get the series to the right track again.

Release was postponed few times to get team some time to polish everything, they did not wan`t to release the game unsatisfactory. I have been following the development from the beginning and I am impressed. I`m sure it will be an awesome game and tomorrow is the D-Day

Zami I may check this one out...I have never played this series.  Could you point me too a good game to start with in this genre?  Something cheap to start with. lol.

My only grand strategy experience so far is with CK II and EU IV but nontheless I got it - but I´ve never played any HoI title before.

Tried it out yesterday for a while and it seems a bit overwheliming in the beginning but I think I´ll get the grip of it.

Sooner or later :D

Overall it´s looking very promising and I think one can have many hours of fun with it.

lol.

After a few hours in HoI IV, I would say that the best game to start grand strategy gaming is HoI IV.

You can get earlier HoI's very cheap now but from learning pov this is the best and easiest. Don't know much abou other Paradox games than HoI, I have been concentrating in WW2.

There are not very much of these games around, HoI IV is your best bet. Look for the cheapest offer, I'd say you can get it something like 40$.

There are some games made by Matrix but those are solely concentrated on warfare, very complex and not so user friendly.

There's a lot of stuff to learn for me too even though I've played earlier HoI's. Game has changed quite a bit and overall for better IMO. Very good first release and knowing Paradox patches will improve it further.

Have had fun with it for 10 hours now. I think this will be my favourite game with BoS of course :)

My guess is you are talking about things like Gary Grigsby's War in the East :)

Great game but requires an enormous amount of time to get into. Ideal for people who have been playing hex based wargames for years - in my case since about 1970!

Yes, that was the one I was meaning.

I played a lot Matrix game called War in the East if I recall the name correctly. Hex based strategy, great game. But since then these bever Matrix games haven't had much attention from me. Just don't have time to play everything and the learning those would need it a lot.

I did remember the name wrong, it was War in Russia.

I remember that one as well - War in the East is the newer version, (2010) same idea, looks modern, much more detailed!!!

But we have to make choices - so many games, so little time!

I know what you are talking about Chief, because I have just opposite feelings about CK an Universalis.

I get sucked in HoI and the rest of the Paradox games don't do it for me. I have tried them briefly earlier.

I think it's the WW2, it's so much closer and more familiar than those others.

All great games though.

I do like HOI 4, it is my first HOI game aswell.

But I still like CK2 the most

I was playing with Austria yesterday trying to avert the Anschluss but seems like Germany didn´t like my decission very much - got steamrolled afterwards

Also unfortunately I had no allies and I wasn´t able to join any factions as I tried before.

But it´s possible that I´ve missed something as this is my first HoI title and I´m only a few hours in.

Would be really interesting though if you could change the course of things with such a small country like Austria.

Never played HoI series but I used to be a big fan of Europa Universalis and CK2. I don't play those anymore, but still have them installed on steam.

HoI is based on historical events and takes into account the reactions of most nations around the world to various events happening. It's of course not perfect, just by watching few gameplays I've already noticed that you can do multiple things that simply could not happen in reality, but its still a very fine strategy.

Point here is that Austria at given time was pretty much alone. Months later Czechoslovakia was sold to buy some time for France and Great Britain. I assume if Austria earlier would not join III Reich but decide to defend its independence, it would face Hitlers wrath all alone. And thats what happens in game.

In older HoI which I've been playing for many many months, to join certain faction you had to gain some relations with faction representatives. It was generally presented as a triangle with one corner representing Axis, one corner representing Comintern and last one Allies. In order to get closer to one of the corners you had to choose proper government at the time of elections, build proper relations with countries, etc. etc. I'm not sure what exactly was Austrian government at that time, but I dont think that after wwI it would have easy time with France or Great Britain. And Soviet Union in such case is useless ally.

BTW. Poland stronk

I tried Spain post civil war with Franco, and decided to accept the offer to join the Axis as my plan was to retake Gibraltar. All went as planned until the USA joined the fray and I suddenly saw my map turning different colours in different parts, yeah I got smashed as I had low manpower from the civil war (plus being my first walk through). Interesting to watch as the Allies tried to come up through Southern Vichy France, however they got pushed back and now stalemate exists across the Pyrenees, with the British freshly re-entrenched in Gibraltar.

Great game :).
