zl2bmh Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 Hello All. I only have 10 buttons available to me to map. I have the Logitech extreme 3D pro joystick. One button has been mapped for the trigger but this still leaves 10. In order of importance so as to not waste these buttons, can someone please pass onto me how they have their buttons mapped. I would be very grateful for any help you can give me. Regards, zl2bmh
Aap Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 It depends on your own preferences and what other equipment you might have. For example do you have TrackIR or need the hat switch for views (or are you using mouse to look around). In general, map those functions on joystick that you need to use quickly or easily during flight, so you don't have to look for the button on your keyboard. Secondly, use those functions that you need often, so again you don't need to use keyboard for it. So for example bombs and rockets (if you are using Russian planes), map (mission briefing) and other buttons that you find that you use frequently during flight.
Dakpilot Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 The importance of keeping the aircraft trimmed correctly in all aspects of flight is often overlooked although not totally historical (some aircraft did have electric trim tho) I find having all three types of trim mapped to hatswitch (forward/back) very convenient and probably more 'representative' ergonomically with a real cockpit than a button on the keyboard The most used/critical situation controls need to be on joystick, less combat important ones can be left on keyboard, it is very much personal choice and depends on what type of aircraft/style you play Cheers Dakpilot
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 I had one many years ago, without TrackIR. I'll suggest this assuming you have TIR - if you don't, the only difference is Button 2 for "center view", the hat for looking around, top right for elevator/stabiliser up, left for down, and the nearest buttons on the base for rudder trim left/right. To the point: Map the trigger as all guns, leave button 2 empty for TeamSpeak if you fly MP (or use it to open the briefing/map). On the top of the stick, the bottom right button for bombs, bottom left for rockets. Top left/right for zoom in/out. Hat up/down for elevator/stabiliser trim, left/right for aileron trim. On the base, map the closest two to you as RPM increase/decrease, second closest as oil radiator open/close, third as outlet/inlet cowl/water radiator open/close, last two as mixture increase/decrease. If you don't fly aircraft with aileron trim (LaGG-3/La-5/Pe-2/He-111/Ju-88, I think), use the hat left/right for rudder trim. Leave gear, flaps and all the regular non-combat stuff to the keyboard. Change around as you wish, hope it helps
zl2bmh Posted June 1, 2016 Author Posted June 1, 2016 Great, really helpful and I appreciate it, so thank you all. Now, if you don't mind, how do you map the stick itself. It has keyboard numbers to fly but I want to get rid of them and use the stick for elevators, ailerons and rudder, but am not sure how to go about it. I expect you delete what's there now but then what, the same for the rudder, getting it from idle to top speed, using the throttle button. Sorry to ask something that's so easy for everyone but unfortunately my parents never bought me a meccano set when I was young Thanks again everyone. zl2bmh
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 I think the stick is set up by default, no? If not, under controls, find Main Controls and you should see the according fields for roll/pitch/yaw. Double click on the squares and map it accordingly. When you're done, put some time into setting up joystick curves to your taste, it helps too.
