What we need is some third party/comunity map makers but I have know idea how to get started on that

Posted

Keep playing IL2 1946 if you still enjoy it. Other than that, I have no idea what you are talking about. Did the old way not involve shooting things down or blowing things up?

I have 34 games just on STEAM alone. Games are not in short supply here.

All the games I have involve blowing things up more or less except for Dirt Rally

I just total a beautiful Rally car once in awhile.

I guess it all comes down to choice and what you want to buy.

That looks sooooo budget compared to what  we have in this sim

But recreated in the DN engine? And maybe with a pair of opposing carriers?

OH MY!!

This forum is getting as bad as the World of Tanks forum.

It was written in the way that anyone can buy what ever they like

and want there is a lot of choices out there.

Anyone know what the consensus is from the Russian perspective on what the next campaign they would like?

Here you go, Penguin:

To get a better picture, here are some poll results from the Russian-speaking forums:

Question: "Which theatre of operations are you waiting for the most?"

Results:

  • Western Europe - 74
  • Eastern Europe - 526
  • Mediterranean - 99
  • South-East Asia - 20
  • Pacific - 141
Combining these votes with this poll, we have:
  • European Theatre: Eastern Front (Barbarossa, Finland, Poland etc) - 748
  • European Theatre: Western Front (BoB, Battle of Normandy etc) - 281
  • Mediterranean and Middle East Theatre (East/North African, Italy etc) - 573
  • Pacific Asian Theatre (Pacific ocean, Burma, Japan etc) - 407
(...)

On a side-note, here are the results of a more detailed poll conducted there. Same question as above. Results (top 5 bolded):
  • Kuban - 56
  • Kursk - 47
  • Leningrad - 17
  • Crimea - 41
  • Other Eastern Front option - 5
  • Battle of Britain - 4
  • El-Alamein - 2
  • Tunisia - 11
  • Sicily - 4
  • Mainland Italy - 0
  • Other Western Front - 4
  • Guadalcanal - 7
  • Burma - 2
  • New Guinea - 4
  • Midway - 13
  • Other Pacific/South-East Asia option - 1
  • Spain - 9
  • Winter War - 3
  • Khalkhin-Gol - 1
  • I don't know what I want, and I don't want what I know - 1

Kuban - 56

It is not surprising for the Kuban Bridgehead the bloodiest air battles took place there.

It is a good choice.

For the East it's popular because it's iconic, above all. Kuban was when the Soviet air forces not only reached parity with the Luftwaffe, but actually started to beat it back. The pilots and generals in Kuban would hold conferences to discuss tactics and methods, then implemented them right away. It was a time for innovation and payback.

For the West, besides the iconic bit for those who take an interest in the Great Patriotic War, it brings a lot of variety in terms of terrain, aircraft and missions. It would be the first scenario to have an actual sea by it, beautiful mountain ranges and ports, meaning larger vessels would be there, and also the Axis would get their shipping as well. The aircraft would be a healthy mix of Soviet and foreign types on the Soviet side, while the Axis would get both completely new classes of aircraft like the Hs-129 (a perfect match to the Il-2) and possibly aircraft from other Axis nations.

I remember playing a mission for Forgotten Battles that had an AI Hs-129 with the huge cannon slung underneath and I knew I wanted to fly that thing. I loved TD's one in 1946 but I can't go back to those graphics anymore. Listen up Devs!

Historically speaking, the developers have always presented their products in a backwards chronological order.  Rise of Flight began with the Americans in 1918 and over the years works backwards to 1916 content.  Battle of Stalingrad was followed a year later the Battle of Moscow which took place a year earlier

If they continue with the trend, it looks like Barbarossa will be the next expansion.

Wow, won't that be fun...

Sit on the airfield and get cut to pieces before you know what happened.

Another Axis shooting gallery will not go over well in the west methinks.

If we must stay with the VVS vs. the Luftwaffe, then I'm all for the Kuban, and the inclusion of more western aircraft types.

Interesting theater, but without a proper SP campaign mode I will not bite.

They have an advanced mission creator in the game, why not sling this together with an advanced campaign generator? I really don't need scripted missions if this is too much, just give us something even IL2 1946 had.

A couple nights ago a buddy and I raided the main Axis airfield(made easier by the little diagram of them you get now on the map) .  We came in mowing grass, found 5 JG guys in their 109's on the runway, slammed them with cannon and rockets and made tracks.  My kind of shooting gallery.  Almost as good as when we get to spend an hour blowing up players in tanks.

I won't be signing up for another Eastern Front DLC. Whilst I appreciate the historical significance, as an MP game (I'm not going to even go there with the SP Campaign), its not as appealing to me as I'd prefer to fly USAAF/RAF aircraft instead. Eventually IL2 will head to the WTO or MTO or PTO - hopefully not too far away. I'm just hoping by the time they do get there, the MP server list isn't a ghost town (any more than it is now) with the majority of servers being in Russia or Europe somewhere.

it's people like you that are at fault when there wont be a MTO expansion. It's a small genre. almost no one plays it anymore and we should buy every single installment, as long as the quality keeps being that great, to support the Devs in the making of more expansions. :P

Not sure if its a joke, but in any case, customers always choose products according to their preference, not future of some product or company. It is developers failure not to recognize the needs of the market, so to blame customers that they decide not to buy something they do not see as interesting or appealing is a wrong approach. Though to give a credit, so far 1CGS/777 made good choices and that we are where we are proves that. I am sure they will make another wise choice soon  ;)

They really could try their chance, even if as a parallel project, with an offer for aerobatic aircraft and some sort of "Red Bull Air Race" set of sceneries.....

Just imagine a Pitt's, and Extra, a Sbach, a Sukhoi, a Yak, and so on... ready for some really nice aerobatic exhibitions, and designed with the unique quality of 1C / 777 flight dynamics model ?

Reno Air Races too...

I believe it would attract a huge bunch of simmers....

Come on now, the idea is good, but it's perhaps one that can come later. There is still a pretty big hole left behind by FSX in the civilian flight simulator market, even if there is still X-Plane, people who are looking for good feeling of flight would definitely come over to this engine.

The major issue though is fitting such an expansion in, and also the fact that it would perform badly within customers who are here for a wartime simulation.

As a compromise, we already have the Soviet Air Force aerobatic team ride (the I-16s of the Red Five), and the airfield where the Soviet Union's prime air show happened (Tushino, in the western outskirts of Moscow). It would be cool if somebody recreated them and signed an Il-2 team for VFAT :)

In my opinion the Developers approach to the small CFS community when they started this was terrible. The already established community was not heard and basically was lost on the first Alpha stage of this sim.

Now, we all know how this community have been, very confrontational and paranoid, so I do not exactly blame them. But I think we see what we are getting in terms of customers. It will be like COD, hoping to gain more than you loose. Because those who fly to day might not fly next month.

I think one way to get numbers is making this sim compatible with Vive or OR, This will bring people witch stay put on WT and visitors from DCS.

And the community (meaning us) need to advertise the game more.

Whatever the next scenario will be, I hope the devs will announce it soon. These endless "what should be next" discussions are getting tiresome.

I predict that there will be a new "what is the next theater" thread within 2 hours of their announcement of the next theater.

I believe that the group that likes air races like that are a very small minority in a already very small niche genre and a sim like that would make them lose more customers than attract them.

Same is kind of true for relatively unknown theatres. People who are interested in exclusive battles (Khalkhin-Gol or whatever) are/were already here. That won't attract new customers.

I think, in its current condition, making the next release one with the possibility to attract more western players by having a bunch of US/British planes would be a smarter idea.

But why is there such a hurry to change the theatre when there is a tremendous amount of other features (outside of the pure and simple geography and type of aircraft) that could really improve what we have right now? I don't think that proposing just a change of theatre (even with the successful inclusion of all those features that were listed on a DD a while back - features, I would say, that are hardly meaningful for the game/simulation itself) would really make things better, nor renew any interest.

I guess because some people dont care as much for the eastern front and have a cultural proximity to other theaters in Europe, or even the Pacific.

Take a look at the various forums of flight sims over the years and see what kind of questions are asked most of the time. I think you will quickly find that people ask mostly about new aircraft and maps. Features are nice but they cant be foundation of any game, what you need is a solid set of aircraft and appealing to customers map (aka proper theater). I mean, DCS has tons of features and yet there are few servers (2-3 in fact running ww2 setup), what people ask mostly for ? Give us Normandy, give us Spitfire, give us P-47, give us Me-262.

I don't know. I guess I just hope there could be a better compromise between longevity and development time.

Better yet, just race using armed aircraft and watch the show as everyone fights to be in the back of the pack ; )

I can`t speak for everyone, but for me, I feel a closer afinity to the Russian war than the Pacific war because, as a Brit, Britain and Russia were directly attacked and bombed heavily. For us we really were at a crunch moment of survival.

While I have flown the pacific a lot (landing on a carrier is fun, but hard), it just wasn`t the same.

So to sum up, I always feel I understand a little bit more what it must have been like for the Russians who were defending and fighting for survival.

i also think it makes a lot of sense to expand on the planes we already have. even with new section of the Easter Front we can keep using the planes we already have

Posted

That's makes sense as an "also" part of the plan, and I don't think anyone would argue that.

They need to move into other theaters to keep the $$$ coming in and expand the player base however.

The flipside, is that to go to the Pacific you need a passion for that in order to do it well so that it's just

not a shell of what it could be...like it was last time. With so many hours, months, years invested...you have

to be interested in what you're doing or it's just a slog and results can suffer.

As a 3D aircraft modeler, I know this all too well.

I think Kuban is the best way they can balance out the East/West bases for now, mostly because the Americans and Brits can relate to the aircraft while the post-Soviet countries relate to the battle. Going elsewhere right now would probably alienate the player base at home, which is a disastrous move. With Kuban they can add all the major types which are missing and fill up the popular imagination. The Kuban battles for the fighter enthusiast there are like the Pacific for the Americans - it was where their air forces put up their fiercest resistance and came out victorious. Opinions are only opinions, of course :)

Ye, I've been watching closely the discussions on ru forums and its sort of one-sided. Only something from the eastern theater of operations will satisfy those guys, which to be honest is a bit disappointing considering last two games already took place in Soviet Union. I've even seen that arguments of sort like: "what about the western community" were negated.
