LPMG Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 Hello fellow pilots! Ive had IL2 lying arround on my steam for a while now and finally decided to try it. I love the game so far, but the amount of help and tutorial you can get in game is not enough (for me at least). I have started with the basics (taxi and take off) and I can hold myself in the air for longer than 5 minutes but here is where I got 2 problems. 1) In order to learn how to aim at air targets, I would need a type of "short mission" where my single objective is to shoot down a few bombers/attackers. I know that there are certain missions already in game, but Id love to fly a plane of my choice and not "attack stukas with a LaGG3...." Is there a way of creating that type of mission in game? 2) I know that the pros at this game fly without markers, but it would help me as a beginner to turn them on. I know this feature is in game and I enabled it in the custom options. They still dont seem to show up however. Any suggestions or ideas why this could be the case? I appreciate any help and hope to see you on the multiplayer server sometime in the future! (I still need to learn A LOT) Greetings LPMG
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 Click "Quick Mission", choose an icon with multiple planes heading towards each other. On the left-hand box, pick your plane of choice. On the right-hand box, pick 4 Ju-52. These are the easiest to shoot down since they are slow and don't have much defensive fire to disturb you. About the icons, I'm not sure. Try pressing H (show/hide interface) or I and see if they show up. Welcome!
LPMG Posted May 25, 2016 Author Posted May 25, 2016 Thank you for the quick response! I guess flying against the "Tante" is the easiest you can get. I will try both things and report back. Thanks for the help!
Dumbo Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 Salute, LPMG! Hey, you're not alone. I'm brand new to this sim, also, and having the same problems that you are. I do plan on spending some time on Requiem's training site to start getting familiar with everything. Like you, I'm starting out with all of the icons visible along with the automatic engine stuff just to get a feel for flying these birds. I know it takes practice, practice, practice. Aiming is tough, and flying without getting into a spin is tough, too! I'm hoping that others jump into this thread to point us both (and others) into more useful directions. I have a question: is there a recommended STARTER PLANE?
Dakpilot Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 For general flight learning the IL-2 is a very good place to start, easy to manage and with forgiving flight/landing/taxi characteristics Cheers Dakpilot
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 In terms of engine management, taxiing, landing and being forgiving in the air, the Yak-1 is probably your best choice. The engine only has nominal power so it's nearly impossible to ruin it, taxiing and taking-off are simple due to the tail wheel lock, landing is very easy and forgiving (hard to ground loop, very stable at low speeds, flaps only have full up and down settings), and it doesn't have any particularly nasty stall capabilities unlike other fighters.
Dumbo Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 Thanks for the replies. I will definitely start out with the Yak-1 and the IL-2 then...a nice way to ease into WWII fighter tactics and ground pounding (I love ground pounding from my LO:MAC days and my beloved Warthog).

JimTM Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 (edited) All you need to know in video : https://www.youtube.com/user/RequiemBoS Welcome! Requiem also has some great Rise of Flight videos on Air Combat Maneuvering and Air Combat Tactics. The concepts also apply to WWII combat. Edited June 2, 2016 by JimTM
Dumbo Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Got Requiem's site bookmarked. Started watching last night.
