I am...love this series. (A couple of bad ones) Always pushing things forward mistakes will be made.

When it is in a sale yes....I think announcing DLC before a game is released like this (especially with such a major race like Chaos) is pretty greedy of them so they wont get full price from me.

I agree Emil...what changed my mind a bit was when they decided to extend that to the first week of sales also. Ill let you know what I think this evening after I have a go with it.

Not sure if you read the story. They received over 50,000 dislikes on a YouTube video. Made the change after that lol. We call that getting "bodied"

Ha ha ha yep they got an ass kicking. I don't mine paying more for something like IL2 but it just looked a very crafty, dishonest and exploitative thing to do....some of the other races should have been the DLC, there are ones that I've never heard of so must have appeared much later on in Warhammers development but not Chaos but of course they did it with Chaos because everyone will want to play with that race.

I had loads of the lead figures and enjoyed Warhammer when it first came out....thats well over 30 years ago now lol but for sure I will buy this game when I can get it cheap :)

No, won't touch this with a large barge pole... lol!

I have Rome 2 and Napoleon though :)

I got into TW with Shogun, I got them all after that but I won't touch this one with a pole, not even a 3 meters long one. Not only that I don't like warhammer but what they did with Rome 2....

Also I should say that since I discover Darth Vader mods for Empire, I don't play CA vanilla games anymore.

I stop playing the Total War series because of this title.

i still got Rome, Attila and the awesome Shogun 2 or Napoleon to play with.

I have enjoyed the series since the original Shogun, IMHO the best game, but with the odd feeling that it was one of those franchises that managed to get worse as it went on with every new game - except perhaps Medieval 2.

Gave up after Rome 2, doubt very much that I will be back.

Medieval 2 was certainly a must have.

The fantasy stuff was too much for my senses, what made me love these series was the historical side, Rome 2 was a mess and the only reason why I got Attila is someone gave it to me for free with a DLC.

I have an idea...list your top 3 Total war games in order...not including Warhammer TW.

Which I must say I am enjoying very much.  This game is optimized very well compared to recent releases.  As someone who is not very familiar with Warhammer I do like the story behind the races and so far it is running like a dream.  Also on my sons PC he has a 780Ti running @ 1920x1080 Ultra settings and unit size looking great.  Battle MAPS are HUGE and the scenery is awesome.

1.Medieval 2 TW

2.Shogun 2 TW

3.Shogun 1 TW

1. Napoleon

2. Medieval 2

3. Shogun 2 (the last very good TW title imo)

For me best was Shogun 2 followed by Empire.

But anyway, I got myself today Warhammer and to be honest its quite good. Sure, its fantasy but I was actually a Warhammer player with those funny miniatures. So cant complain at all. And in terms of gameplay improvements, definitely something was changed with ai in campaign. Less predictable and more fun moves.

Really think this Warhammer was a good idea.

Nice to see some positive reviews. I will pick it up when it goes on sale. Hopefully they learn from the DLC debacle next time :)

CA is one thing. But if you want to know really symbol of greed than Games Workshop exceeds anyone by far. They actually killed their own universe pursuing the income. The base for this total war is Warhammer universe which now was turned into some primitive Age of Sigmar with miniatures closely resembling Warhammer 40 000 Space Marines. Why ? Because Space Marines were best selling part of this universe. Regardless of complains and expectations they killed something great, just like they killed twice armies I was collecting.

Believe me, if DLCs would depend on Games Workshop decisions, you would have to pay for every single unit in British Pounds.

@ and about the game, I've spent few hours now playing Dwarfs. Very pleasant campaign, a bit easy and what I've discovered is that dwarfs are not giving me as much joy, they are too static. Lots of shooting and smashing though. Personally I cant wait for Bretonnia with mighty Green Knight and Lady of the Lake.

And ai in battles is vastly improved as well.

Chief I agree, one question.  Did you try Shogun 2?  I think it was really well done and as another poster said with mods some of the other titles have some legs as well now too.  Just curious as I believe Shogun 2 was the last good game.  I could never get Empire TW to run well enough to play and just cant go back to it with all the other things I play these days.  On a side note...did anyone ever play the game TAKEDA?  It was a samurai era battle game...like total war with no city management just battles.  It was for its time very well done.

I will squirt ketchup on my screen before I give them any money for a blood pack!!!

Original Rome and medieval II - awesome. The franchise now? Dead to me, like all those captive prisoners as my psychotic general charged through the lands of my enemies.

Original Medieval was in many was shallow and so far from any historical accounts. Rome was great though, as you say. Though later games could bring something new and refreshing, such was Shogun 2 which I consider peak of the series and Empire which tried to address the colonial times, XVIIIth century revolutions, various forms of governing and extreme changes in battlefield tactics. And they did it pretty well.

On the Warhammer. After few days and some hours spent in game I can add a bit more.

Game certainly gained on diversity, each faction is unique, has its own tech tree and special rules. As mentioned Ai seems to be vastly improved and campaign is harder than before, even on normal level it may be a challenge to average player.

What is new and I like a lot is :

- The more rpg style elements and overall deeper development and customization for generals, we can now build various skills of the general, add him better mounts and weapons, etc.,

- Good optimization and stable performance at release,

-  Renaming units,

- Battle system, along with underground battles (though it has flaws, of which below I can talk),

- Special abilities of the heros as well as magic skills,

- Not all parts of the map can be captured, some of them can only be destroyed as not every faction can set its cities everywhere,

- We can rename units.

- The 1 vs 1 combat system has been removed in this game and the game returned to the older system of battle where it was unit versus unit instead of warrior versus warrior.

However game also lost a lot :

- there are no longer naval battles,

- sieges are limited to minimum and only take place when major city like capital is besieged, otherwise the battle is taken far outside of the city. At the same time those what are left, are very unbalanced with towers having ridiculous range and firepower, leaving only one possibility for the attacker - to rush as quickly as possible and forget about any tactics. Also, those sieges now bring us only to the very small part of the city and city walls, which compared to defense of castles in Shogun 2 or streets in Rome/Attila is very very disappointing,

- there is no control over the taxes anymore, you can only choose to have them or not,

- no family tree to manage your family, heirs and trade your daughters for better lands :)

- battles are faster then before, leaving less for tactics and more for pure unit stats,

- No seasons and no weather changes,

- Autoresolve is broken at the moment, it can't calculate beasts and magic correctly, so the predicted outcome of the battle is totally wrong.

- Economy is quite bad, not only lacks balance but sometimes makes no sense. The settlements provide way reduced income now compared to older titles and this in combination with the fact that garrison units now cost upkeep completely destroys the economy of the game,

- We have no mercenaries, which was extremely disappointing to me due to fact that I was almost a decade ago collecting a mercenary army called in Warhammer universe Dogs of War and hoped to see them here,

- Units have no formations,

- Heros are too strong, they can take fire from 3 units of archers/crossbowmen or whatever you name it and keep walking. Its not w a common practice in my battles that I can easier break them and make him retreat then kill. And once running, he is hard to kill as well, even for heavy cavalry units. Some like Manfred von Carstein are also extremely powerful heroes and can kill dozens of soldiers before falling,

- Sieges last quite long, even smaller places can stand 8 turns without food and up to 13 before surrendering. That is way too long, as any decent Ai will manage to build 2-3 armies in that time and break the siege easily,

- As in all total wars Ai cheats, ai can spawn as many armies as it wants (Vampires or Orks travel with 2-3 armies of highly trained units), ai can have full armies of 20 units despite having only a single city ... same old stuff.

So to be fair, game has gained a lot and lost a lot. It has gained some stuff that I would like to keep, but some should be dropped. And same for things lost, I want CA to return sieges in their normal form, I want naval battles back, I want my units to fave different formations, etc.

I would recommend it for Warhammer fans certainly, while others should wait until it becomes cheaper. CA has great sales with this one and will try to squeeze every penny from every fan around the world.

Shogun 2 was very beautiful, in an orientalist way. I appreciate beautiful oriental things myself, so this was entirely agreeable.

Of course the graphics had improved from Shogun 1 (don't they always) but I preferred the abstracted areas of the strategic map. Given how poor the series is in strategic terms, the more abstract the better.

The tactical battles were also better in Shogun 1: it was possible to manoeuvre an enemy into retreat if you had a high ranking general: in Shogun 2 everything is a 5 minute fight to the death appropriate for 14 year olds with attention deficit disorder.

I am looking with interest at this, as a more traditional wargame that may nevertheless capture the reality of the period battles:  interested to see if  anyone likes it.

Since they changed the Free 'DLC' aspect and after watching a few reviews I decided to buy it.

I played one of the very early games so I'm no TW expect but the battles are over in a few minutes WTF!?

This was not in the campaign, rather the Battle section, I chose Ultra for the number of units so the battle would be huge. It feels that the units more too fast, the whole thing turns in to chaos straight away and it's over before you can blink.

Am I missing something here? I was at least hoping there would be a bit of prodding and probing around the edges of formations with ranged units before just diving in balls out...instead it seems like the AI just charges straight in and it's all over

No Emil the time of Battles is my major complaint.  Seems its being addressed via mod right away from the TW fourm.  I will say the latere battles do tend to run quite a bit longer with better units and high ranking generals.

Ye, thats one of the bigger flaws. But there are very good mods that slow down units to their proper speed and make battles last a lot longer.

Chief your post got me thinking. A total war in a mad max post apocalyptic setting I think could be interesting. The formations of troops and vehicles could be cool.

I was told to get a mod by radius or something so hopefully that will work but the battles are supposed to be the high-light it's hard to imagine how they can get such a basic thing wrong and turn it into a panicked click fest. Also the limit of 40 units or 20 without the large units clicked) is way too small imho....you need more than this. You can have extra AI armies so this cannot be an engine limitation, if I have 200k or 300k of points what is the point of that if I can only have 40 units

I think even without mods the first issue would not be an issue in MP but I feel the unit limitation of 40 is really crap and needs addressing but I'm 1 hour in so I could easily be wrong or not understanding it all properly.

Emil, the 40 unit cap per army was introduced to TW games long ago, Rome 2 if I recall correct, but Attila have it for sure. Before it was worst..when you can only have 20 units per army.

Naaah, in custom battles maybe but in campaign you could get lots more. I remember those creepy Medieval II situations with Mongols spawning at the border of the map and attacking my cities with 5-6 armies at the same time. It actually caused crashes of my pc. Same in Empire. It's now that a player can have bigger armies as well.

And believe me Emil, its just that units in this game are small. 90 men per unit is like nothing, compared to Empire or Rome II. I could easily field army from one border to the other in other games.

SYN_Haashashin

Yeah you can have 5 or 6 armies attacking and showing up, but it will be 40 units (not the size) per side at any given time on the screen. 80 units total. About size, well...Darth Vader Mod is impressive with Empire, unit with 300 men....huge, smokie battles...now I want to play it
