seafireliv Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 (edited) Maybe it`s the extra instructions that pop up now that are confusing me further, but when I`m flying the I16 at about 90% power, I see the `Boost` notification appear. This is bad when not in combat apparently and the new notification tells me to reduce power, so I do. However, I still keep getting the Boost and told to reduce power until i`m down to about 30% power which means my I16 ends up crawling along. Even my AI wingmen keep overtaking me and getting anywhere takes ages. Am I supposed to just continually push the throttle up and down to avoid boosting too long and to actually move at a reasonable speed or is there some kind of way to prevent the `Boost` while in normal flight? I think you have to reduce the RPM as well 1
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 Reduce RPM by 100 rotations I think, or by 5-10%. The main thing in the I-16 is to watch the temperatures though, so don't worry about it.
Jade_Monkey Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 I dont know if it was the latest patch but my engine died really fast the other day. Before, you could max out everything except RPM (90%) and you were in continuous mode. Now I'm not sure.
seafireliv Posted May 21, 2016 Author Posted May 21, 2016 The RPM! Of course! Thanks for the advice, guys.
VBF-12_Snake9 Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 93 pp is the number you want to set. You gain nothing by boosting the rpm. You gain about 25 kph by using the boost, wep button. Always leave rpm at 93.

BlitzPig_EL Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 This may sound like a very silly question about the I 16, but how can you possibly set the RPM when you cannot see the instruments? I have Track IR and still cannot find a way to see any of the I 16s panel.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 I set the default view all the way back (hold Home then press F10, I think). That way you can see most of it, but of course most instruments still need you to duck a little.
BlitzPig_EL Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 I'll have to play with the head position I guess.
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Bind new snap view to the instrument panel. Btw i fly 100 % throttle and 93% prop pitch - in that configuration engine is in continous mode.
curiousGamblerr Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 There's this one camera/head move button, "Custom View" or something, that was bound by default to look at the instrument panel. It works even when Track IR is activated. It basically ducks and and looks directly at the instruments, filling the screen with the panel. On most planes it's not very useful, but I keep it bound basically just for the I-16 at this point because it lets me snap to the instruments and back almost instantly.

A bit of a pain to set up, but it works.
BlitzPig_EL Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Interesting, I mapped the "Custom" head position thing to the hat where I have my other views mapped, works a treat!
Jade_Monkey Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 Is there any difference between the boosted mode (RPM and Manifold max) and the Boost button (LShift+B)?? I noticed that the La5 also has the boost button. Does any other plane have it?

Before, you could max out everything except RPM (90%) and you were in continuous mode. Now I'm not sure. Maybe check your engine cowl shutters (may need externals for this). They have their own control (different from water/oil radiators), like the La which you can set to an axis, and it's easy to forget. As for the instruments, for me the default Pilot Head "Snap Position modifier: custom" seems to give me a great view of the instruments in every aircraft.

I ended up changing the mapping for all planes to the same keys. I don't know why they would have different keys by default. No big deal, thanks for the help.

Yea, I`ve discovered that on the 1-16 and LA5 you really need to open those radiator cowlings right away (I think they`re the oil and engine coolers) specifically designed for them, while keeping your rpms \ prop pitch down until combat. P-40 is a fussy beggar too, a bit like a pretty woman that`ll freak out if you don`t treat her perfect! Unlike IL2 1946 on it`s Realism mode, these aircraft are seriously fussy and will die on you if you don`t watch the heat and revs. I`m still practising and slowly improving. BOS\BOM is definitely more realistic in engine management than the former game. Edited June 6, 2016 by seafireliv
