Game version 2.001 discussion: Battle of Moscow

Takes time. Resets controls/configurations. Doesn't offer anything I care about. So why bother?

I just wanted to play a couple of minutes, now. I don't want to download a patch, then have no time to play any more. Updating should be a background task, not a mandatory thing popping up when you're launching. Anyway, time's up, gotta do other stuff.

And that's why lord gaben created Steam

If it's hard is because you want it to be hard.

anyone else having trouble with downloading?

I had 4 failed patches so i decided to reinstall the game. now when i start the launcher it downloads for 2-3 minutes starting at maximum speed for a couple seconds and than continuously reducing until it's down to 0 B/s

i don't know what causes this, but everything else on my end works. Chrome, other games, Steam, everything works

Update is installed & working fine for me. I noticed a Microsoft C++ Redistributale installation window popped up while downloading but my version was already higher so it didnt do anything. Maybe there's some conflict with that for those with problems after updating?

I selected the Repair option...game launches just fine.

Does this update reset input mappings?

No. We always inform about such changes.

Tech chat now has instructions in it. For instance it tells you to adjust your mixture, and gives you instructions for landing.

Interesting idea, I like it. However:

  • During engine startup, it told me to adjust settings when I had my mixture at 50%. It kept doing the same at 98% (I have to adjust the deadzone on my throttle quadrant, can't get to 100% at the moment). What mixture am I supposed to use. By the way "adjust mixture" isn't giving me the information I need. Does it mean up or down?
  • During approach in my Pe2, it told me to extend my flaps fully. I know people who can land the Pe2 that way, but that's not the method Han recommended, IIRC

I also noticed other changes: I was running out of runway after landing my Pe2, and at the end it ran off to the side after I lost control of the direction. I wasn't going fast, but it was enough for the left landing gear to break. It makes things a bit more challenging, which I like.

There is also this problem with icons on MP mission maps: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/22506-patch-introduced-new-problem-icons-not-showing/?do=findComment&comment=358242

My axis and button/key remapping was fine, no resetting.

I updated with zero issues.,

The colors look a bit more vibrant in game, any changes in that area?

Maybe it was my f.lux setting.

Yeah, I was just going to mention it. 4x time acceleration is now available in campaign. Nice!

52. Maximum time acceleration multiplier increased;

yay

On another note - I experienced a bug where my trackir stopped responding once I've flown out of the game area. The game plays a short animation and returns you to cockpit and then bam, no response. I didn't have to restart the game though, just restart the mission and it was fixed, strange. This was right over moscow.

I kind of like them,  sometimes you forget about something (gear etc).

However, it's obvious that they don't change depending on the plane.

Your example is a good one. Another ones is telling you to use left/right brake on soviet planes...

Congratulations team! I'm downloading now!

EDIT: Hrmm... three CTD so far. Once loading the mission and twice at the end of a mission. Ouch.

Update installation went smoothly and pretty quickly (did get a popup and had to do a repair on one of the MS components, but it seemed to proceed OK). Loaded up a quick mission with the Ju-88, and everything started up just fine.  All settings seemed to have been retained, so that's good.  FPS seemed a bit lower than it should have been, but still close to 60 so certainly acceptable.  Noticed that the old "bubble of blur" effect still seems to be here.  So, back "on the shelf" for a while - maybe one of these days this will be fixed or someone will develop a work-around, or maybe my eyes will just get worse to the point where I don't notice it.  Meanwhile, back to RoF I guess.

Any update is welcome, thank you... I was sad to see though that the leveling up system in the SP campaign remains the same... looking forward to the next update.

I am also disappointed that the Pilot Level is still there.

This in my opinion is the biggest non sim like bastardry that is a real enjoyment killer.

PLEASE MAKE PILOT LEVEL SELECTABLE - from a level 12 Pilot.

After completing the BoM campaign and having previously completed BoS part 2, I am giving the BOS part 1 another go.

I lost all interest in it previously after reaching PL10 and getting sick of the frustration of attempting bombers. I am just about to give up on it again and go back to PWCG.

Devs, is there any chance this horrible inclusion will ever be selectable or resettable? Please make it one or the other then 100% of players can enjoy the campaign.

LOL!

Yeah it seems canned right now, maybe they will adjust it to per plane lol.

Does it also tell you to climb at 260 mph?

Hmmm, P40 is a tricky bird as I keep breaking the engine, it was around 45% throttle is needed for continuous mode. Anyone doing well with this on expert?

Seems like the 190 is better. Zooms very well, snap stall at the expected speed but keeps a tight turn prior to that.

No idea what that is, screenshot to show it?

There is no %, don't use that. The values are in the briefing for the plane. It's 2600 rpm and 37MP. Keep to that in the cockpit and you can run forever.

The worst thing the first Il-2 series did was their faux engine management that was garbage. Just set it to a % and forget it. That's not how it works.

I've tried to break my landing gear by abusing my gear as badly as possible on rough terrain, haven't succeeded yet.

Yet.

I think tips are a great idea, can be very helpful to new pilots. There are some glitches like the one you mentioned but overall I like the idea.

It was mentioned in the patch notes that you can turn it off: 2. Piloting tips added (they can be switched off in user interface settings);

Beautiful forests on the Moscow map! Also, the trees hopping about as they're redrawn seems much reduced, perhaps eliminated. Great progress.

Install went without a glitch. The Moscow campaign seems richer in terms of action. Beautiful forests. Good Job well done. Congratulations to all the team.

Nevertheless I see two graphical issues that pop into the eye. One is recent and one is valid for both campaigns.

1) When a plane is flying against a medium to dark grey sky it is outlined in a luminous contour that is not realistic at all.

2) The positional lights on wing tips are much too bright and have too large halos when the plane is seen from far that means when the plane is small. When the plane is large then proportions are ok, but it seems that the lights size and halos are not scaled down when the plane is smaller in size.

One improvement I see would be to parametrize the radius from the view point on the ground where there is moving tall grass displayed. This zone is pretty small and so there is a too brutal change between the grassy zone and the textured flat land surface which reduces immersion. More powerful systems could handle large patches of terrain simulated with moving grass.

Just a small add on comment.

Now comes the phase where there will be some bug corrections additions and improvements.

But the big, very big question is:  WHAT COMES NEXT ?

What are the coming projects. A Pacific campaign, a Mediterranean one, any guess ?

I understand your natural love for campaigns on russian motherland, and some would like a Kuban campaign (btw a major army clash of WWII with a lot of tanks)  but it is again on land.  Some battle at sea with warships would be a really nice and complementary evolution to your campaigns library.

It is technical restrictions. At the moment we can't make it differently.

We haven't made a final decision yet.

Flew 5 or 6 missions in campaign after the patch and things have improved once again. Two of those were scenario missions, good work on those too. Had fun flying, thanks guys  :joy:

Me too! I flew two of the scenario missions from each side last night and was very pleasantly surprised at the improvements and how (relatively) easy they were to complete at PL 12. The draw distance seemed improved, the frame rate and general smoothness of play was better, the terrain generally was more real, the intensity of the air war was improved and more varied. General immersion was vastly improved. I didn't like the added flying advise "climb at 260 kph" etc., at first, but it grew on me and I felt it was improving my handling of specific aircraft. I have a big enough monitor that means these messages pop up just out of view so they don't interfere with my peripheral vision. The activity on the airfields has improved with more static aircraft and vehicles, fuel bowsers etc, although I would still like to see more ground crew in action. All in all, a big thumbs up to 1C/777.
