Hi, this is my first post i think. Why, why, why must we have to earn skins and other unlocks? Before all you guys get upset, just listen. Im 52 years old. As like alot of you, flight simmed for 20 years.  I enjoy this sim. I do however also enjoy CloD. Im no noob and do love full real. I paid for them, just give em.

Thanks,

a old gammer who doesnt hve time for earning accolades i already paid for.

"Compromise between different design philosophies and pandering to different playerbases" is, I think, a polite explanation to that.

Notice that if you own all 10 planes for a theatre, you can unlock all plane mods (but not skins) via website.

You can download user-made skins representing renditions of most official skins if you'd like.

Otherwise, Trupobaw is correct - it's a design choice. In the end you didn't pay for unrestricted access to the skins, but for access to the campaign mechanism that allows you to unlock them.

I could unlock bos weapons on site , but not BOM myself

I treated the unlocking part as mandatory familiarisation - by the time I got unlocks I wanted, I knew the plane and its capabilities in game pretty well. Probably works better for WW1 dinosaur like myself than veterans of many WW2 sims :).

I'm enjoying it so far as well for the same reasons, particularly the Battle of Moscow aircraft. Thanks to that I took up the I-16 with the ShKAS and by all means I'm loving it. The nose guns run dry pretty quick, but the wing ones last ages. Last time I tore down a Ju-88 and mortally damaged two Bf-109F-4s and still didn't run out of ammo. The combat only ended when I accidentally went in for a third and after shooting it up my propeller chewed off his tail and forced me to end the mission there and then.

Nah, nobody's gonna flame you on that, Gunshy.  I believe most aren't crazy about the unlocking scheme (for weapons OR for skins).  Plenty of evidence for that if you browse these forums a little.

However, beyond what the guys above already mentioned, I'll add that you only have to get through 1 campaign mission to earn your first skin (sometimes 2 skins if you did well enough).  That 1st skin is always a winter white skin, so at least then you've got a decent skin for any mission whether online or offline.  If you can find 20 minutes to spare, 1 mission won't cost you more than that.

Getting through missions is easy if you haven't flown the campaign any/much and are still at lower 'pilot levels.'  I went ahead & 'earned' all my skins on BOS, and that process pushed me up to level 9.  Now I'm at level 10, and since I don't fly that much, survival is a real chore at this level, let alone mission success!  So, I won't be earning many skins on the sequel (BOM) unless/until they change the way they're earned.  BUT, I won't be at all surprised if that happens.  I'm confident we'll see positive changes of some nature in this area, as we already have in so many others.  So sit tight for now at least & we'll see.  (And you can always download & use excellent custom community-made skins in the meantime.)

They're keeping things under wraps right now, but we know two things:

1. Players will be given an option to reset level in one way or another

2. Levels will be substituted with ranks

Supposedly other improvements to the campaign are coming shortly, so I'm very curious to see what they come up with.

I do hate the unlock too, I remember the mess it create when it happen. Once I download then what do I do? Where should I put it? I am sorry I am ignorant on the subject

Thank you

I think the premium version has them all unlocked, but you need to apply the unlocks in a separate step. Basically, there is somewhere where you need to switch them off.

I personally really enjoy the unlocks, so I've not tried it myself though.

dB, once you've downloaded a skin you like, go to your Il-2 folder and click on 'data', then 'graphics', then 'skins'. There you will have a folder for each aircraft. Pick the one your skin belongs to, and just drop the .dds skin file into the folder.

I have exactly the same philosophy. The progress of earning the unlocks gets me familiar enough with the planes, especially ones that I probably won't fly a lot. By the time I unlock everything I know the plane well. I don't mind unlocking things as part of the campaign progress in fact it's rather fun to accomplish it.

I've been having more fun with BoM standard than BoS premium on the campaign because of that, there is a nice feeling to getting the goodies. Putting it in historical context, the good pilots were the ones getting the more lethal stuff and the newest aircraft so earning it through experience isn't so bad after all :)

I didn't bother with the default game skins. Most of them are in no way related to the given theather. the user made skins are a perfect solution. The only drawback is that other won't see them in mp unless they have them to. Liked the old system better that way.

Cmon Lucas I don't understand the rational with that. Even if I try very hard. Campaign can be fun for some but it doesn't make it more fun because you earn a skin

Well, don't you get happy when you get new things? A new shirt, a new pair of leather shoes, a brand new screwdriver? I can get happy from getting a cool new skin as well, and particularly from having aircraft be better armed pr equipped when I bring it back in one piece for new missions. Still working my way to the RPK-10 on the Pe-2, I'll need that for overcast missions.

Yes I do get happy if I bought new shoe as long as they come with the laces. :) If the campaign wasn't so dry maybe I'll enjoy it more. In the same time I feel that there was a labour of love into this.

On the subject of skin, if i download some here in the forum are they visible only to me on the servers?

No. Newer gear has always been issued to the squadrons on the more "high intensity areas of combat", technologically spoken.

There, quality mattered more because the opponent had some new gear thrown into combat. E.g. the channel front.

You could be the best Ju-88 killer in the RAF in Scotland, but still you would have to wait for a Spitfire until 1942/43 and still use your Hurricane until then.

You might as well been the best Il-2 killer, but you would have to do with a 109 E, or F and never see the new 109 G-somewhat,

unless the jocks on the channel front got their hands on it before. ;)

My 2 cents: I'm quite happy with dropping that unlock system. I have enough stuff around to be done, so flying every frakkin' crate in this game

in the career mode to unlock any silly weapon and/or skin is simply out of the question.

Surely this has been implemented to give the satisfaction of "achievement" to some, but to me,

who's been playing that genre since the late 80s, it felt like being forced in line with today's console head kids.

I like to get to know the planes by "battling" against my buddies and then sharing the experience with them. That way, we get to the point of knowing the

plane a lot more thoroughly than playing SP career missions again and again and again. If all weapons are unlocked from the start, it's almost perfect!

Needless to say that I deactivated the unlock system, once this option became available.

But again, just my 2 cents.
