GridiroN Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 Is there any functionality of turning your bomb fuses off other than not killing people if you have to drop bombs away from your intended target?
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 Some targets like mechanised convoys are easier to hit with contact fuses. With my standard 5 seconds timer the trucks always run away, while if I drop a 100kg brick on them the whole pack goes up in flames right away.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 Is there any functionality of turning your bomb fuses off other than not killing people if you have to drop bombs away from your intended target? Yes I think it's CTRL V iirc
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 Ah, I misread it, my bad. I presume if you're at low altitude and damaged, you can then drop the bombs without blowing yourself up to make the aircraft lighter.
GridiroN Posted May 15, 2016 Author Posted May 15, 2016 Yes I think it's CTRL V iirc No, sorry, I'm asking what the purpose of it is.
busdriver Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 You have the idea, the purpose of disarming a weapon is to permit safe jettisoning of weapons in friendly territory. Realistically you would takeoff with your bombs "safe" in case of an emergency (engine fire/failure, gear fails to retract) and once you're approaching the enemy lines, "arm" them.
Yogiflight Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 What about the bombs getting hit by shrapnells or bullets? Do they explode when armed and not explode when safe?
GridiroN Posted May 16, 2016 Author Posted May 16, 2016 (edited) What about the bombs getting hit by shrapnells or bullets? Do they explode when armed and not explode when safe? In real life, it's possible I imagine for something to trigger the explosives, but I doubt it's modelled in game, hence, this thread. Edited May 16, 2016 by GridiroN
LLv34_Temuri Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 I'd like to see the German electric fuses for which you can set the delay in-flight modeled in this sim.
busdriver Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 (edited) What about the bombs getting hit by shrapnells or bullets? Do they explode when armed and not explode when safe? If a piece of shrapnel or a random bullet were to hit the bomb's fuze, this could (emphasis that it is possible, but not a sure thing) cause the fuze to "arm" whilst the bomb is still attached to the plane. And after the fuze time delay has elapsed...KABOOM! The same thing could happen if the fuze was set for detonation on contact. Shrapnel or a bullet ricocheting off the body of a bomb should not cause the bomb to explode or the fuze to arm. This is not something I'd expect to see in this sim. Edited May 18, 2016 by busdriver

According to the last dev update, the chance of a round hitting ammo stores and causing an explosion has increased. So if cannon and MG ammo can now explode, wouldn't it be possible to model in the bombs exploding on your aircraft due to hits? Also, many times I have seen an IL2 or Pe2 attempt a cross country takeoff, screwup, crash, then explode violently from their stores. Maybe it does happen in game?
