just one of these silly ideas.. But I´ve allways wanted some more meaningful ground action in flightsims and wondered how it would be to fly in RTS-settings. Seeing, that like on the DeD server, the ground forces can actually be quite a usefull addition and with rumours of a second groundcentered game maaybe in development, I wondered how viable it could be to make two different products interact? And how you could balance it meaningful?

Some thoughts:

Maps:

When looking at tank sim/strategy titles running in real time, for instance those from (graviteam or others, too), it is clear, that one of the challenges in interaction is map design. Fligh sims usally have huge, but less detailed and alterable landscape then ground oriented games.. and there are a number of different approaches.. WT for instance has a detailed mini-battlezone set in a fixed location of larger less-detailed air-map, which has some good working sides, but also very "arenaish" feel and despite other bombtargets an insane clustering of air units over those mini-battlezones. For a less casual approach, I think this way would not be ideal suited, as the battle area is always too crowded that way which does shift the balance to air units.. you know where to expect targets and they are like "in a barrel" [that arena zone] all the time

A different approach would be the same map, but unqueal detailing.. ie: all the 3d objects would have fixed coordinates and places in common, but the actual model it´s scalable details would differ in the respective programs. IE: you see a similar target in the flightsim, but not all the damage-stages or so on.

The danger of this approach is having "unsyning" bugs between world representations

A third way would be scaling down in the ground game, ie: with the flightsim worlds allready beeing pretty pretty, you´d settle for that as comon ground, deliberatly having a game that is not "top notch" detailed.. but oriented on the performance needs of the flightsim.
