Talk me down from the edge...

The whole chute shooting thing really has me in an ethical dilemma. Emotionally it feels wrong to shoot a guy in a chute, especially if the odds are good he can be captured. Yet, I have this nagging feeling of the guy getting back to his unit just to shoot down more of my comrades. Of course that's in a real war situation. I don't know how I'd feel if I knew a guy I let escape, killed one of my buddies.

In game, like I've said, hacking somebody down in a cute seems to be bad etiquette. Personally I don't really care if somebody shoots me down. I won't do it, just because I don't want to offend, and I get no thrill from it. One thing to remember, once you've let somebody 'offend' you, you have given him emotional control.

But what takes me aback is when people switch to the emotional gut reactions, and start throwing around honour or chivalry. Those are controller words, which are often misused or abused. And that's what gets us into wars in the first place. But I guess that's OT and would be in a psychology/ ethics discussion right?

I do however agree that people that just go online to piss people off are flying douchebags. And they mess up the game.

But I guess that's OT and would be in a psychology/ ethics discussion right?

Why OT? The whole point of ethics is to work out, in a rational manner, principles of behaviour that will allow a group of people to get along in circumstances where their natural psychological urges tend to create conflict.

The difficulty is that there is rarely if ever a single perfect answer, but if an acceptable answer is not found, the regression to an "anything goes" state of nature is likely, which only a few people find appealing.

So this whole thread has been a psychology/ethics discussion; and an interesting one too, thanks to the OP's good management. Your post seem to me to be right on topic, including the last part.

Sometimes people who are completely invested in a given ethical rule find it shocking, SHOCKING!, that anyone else can possibly disagree or claim that there is room for rational discussion about what the rule should be. This does make discussion about ethics difficult with such people so it is generally just better to ignore them. Easier said than done..

If an enemy flyer takes me out as I'm taking off, or when I'm trying to land, so what?

It's never bothered me as many, many aircraft were lost that way, so for me it's pretty realistic... If I'm stupid enough to stick nav lights on and someone pings me, again, I'm at fault.

If I go online I generally fly from the furthest airfield from the front line... it's kind of common sense?

If I try to take off or land at a front line airfield, then I expect to run the gauntlet and may get trouble, but that is my choice to use it.

Rules? Don't have a need for them... as someone has said, fly with common sense. The only thing I would never accept or do myself is shoot a bailed out pilot... Would I do it in real life, no, so I feel no need to do it in a game either.

Jah, and for those that are trying to shoot me up as I take off, remember this.. If you don't get me before I take off, you can bet I'm laughing. :-)

Heh, this reminded me of a Yak-1 sortie on DED this Thursday. I lined up, rockets under my wings, nav lights on and started rolling. At 120km/h I saw a Yak-1 on final from the opposite direction and I started feeling terrible - how amateurish of me, I lined up and didn't check if the runway was clear! 'Fear not though, I can handle it.' I deployed the flaps, brought all engine controls to the wall and took off at 150km/h holding off a stall. I swerved to the right feeling all proud of myself - collision averted, yippee! Then comes the fun bit. Specifically, six guns blazing from a high-speed Fw-190. Banking hard at the edge of stall I managed to avoid most of it in a split second, but my engine took the hit for me. While the Focker extended I took my chances, bringing the aircraft around with my nose pointed at him. He gained distance and I knew it was now or never - I dropped the gear, flaps and went in for a rough landing. Though the prop was bent and the engine was bust, I was on the runway safe and sound.

What is the thinking of players who turn on their Nav lights in battle so friendlies can locate them?  I believe this was another No-No on many IL2 1946 servers.

We used to do it at the end of a CoOp, after we'd eliminated all the opposing AC, or they were all headed back to base.

We'd use the Nav lights just for a moment to form up and head back to base or the carrier together - was more fun that way.

Sure, but at the end of a competitive chess match do you then spit on your opponent? I suspect not. This is not the equivalent of hooking a guy as you cross the blueline (hockey) for positional advantage. This is akin to spearing a guy in the balls after you score in overtime. It is childish in the extreme and not tolerated in "sport."

This is a game no matter how you cut it. It is not war and doesn't actually "simulate" war in any real way. There are no actual good guys or bad guys to defeat. To pretend otherwise is either immaturity or psychosis. There is no justification for chute kills in a game.

As it is a game, it is a social event. We all come together here as a pastime to enjoy the game, the history and for most of us to compete a bit.

Chute killing is nothing more than an EFF U and that is just about the least social thing you can do without physical contact. There really is no justification for it, sporting or social.

or when a guy pulls an opponents hockey jersey over his head while he punches him. bad sportsmanship.

Or time honored tradition? :)
