RFG_Hisl Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 Nice Video. Thanks for sharing. But i think the armament is always only 1X 12,7 mm MG (UB) no matter of the Cannon-Version.
Roast Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 Indeed a nice video. I applaud your bravery for taking this heavy bird in the sky. You rightfully mention the weight of the plane for making it ideal for B&Z attacks, but in the video you approach your targets slowly [due to the weight] from behind, thus making you vulnerable to it's gunners. You were lucky to get away with only that light scratch Better stick to those B&Z tactics next time? Happy hunting!

Really? I'll have to check up on that, you may be right. I took information from a source but did not double check. I'll be more careful next time. Indeed a nice video. I'm actually just starting to learn to fly this aircraft. Been a long time since I flew something like this. I'll improve as time permits. Will be trying this online as well.

Shepherd Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Yes, you have my permission to upload more videos like this. I like the way you take some time to explain a little bit about the aircraft before getting into action. Flown properly the Lagg ist a very effective plane to engage bombers but, as already mentioned I'd suggest just to attack from the rear if you are very much faster than the bomber and even than you cope with a high risk of getting an engine hit. I personally prefer to attack with snapshots from the side or above. For sure it's a little bit more difficult to estimate the right angels and speeds, but with some practice it's possible to kill a bomber with 1-2 short bursts. Beside the minimized risk for your own plane this safes a lot of ammo for the next attack. Anyway, got this I would definitely prefer the 20mm armament before the 37mm canon, but this is just my personal preference... See you in the sky...

I've always loved the LAGG in the old IL-2 series. Used to do snap shots a lot years ago but alas very much out of practice and relearning things. Will continue to learn and improve...perhaps make a video of that as well. I too prefer the 20mm but this was actually my load-out for this particular campaign mission and I could not change it so was stuck with this weapon. See you in the online skies.
ShamrockOneFive Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Nice video! I liked a lot of the different shots you did close in to the aircraft... Looks great! Thanks. Really? I'll have to check up on that, you may be right. I took information from a source but did not double check. I'll be more careful next time. Yep, he's right. With the later series (such as the Series 29 that we have) the armament is always a single Berezin UBS 12.7mm up top and conventionally its the ShVAK 20mm in the nose but with the possibilities of the VYa-23 or Sh-37 cannons as well. The earlier series such as the Series 4 had a veritable broadside: 2xShKAS 7.62mm 1 or 2xUBS 12.7mm (depending on the factory) 1xShVAK 20mm As you can imagine... all of those guns and their ammunition weighed a lot! So everything was simplified to a single heavy machine gun and a single hub mounted cannon. 1
Learstang Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 (edited) ShamrockOneFive is correct about the armament. The series 2 and 3 were even more heavily armed, with two UBS 12.7mm machine guns, two ShKAS 7.62 mm machine guns, and a single ShVAK 20mm cannon firing through the propeller hub. Heavy armament, but too much for an underpowered aircraft like the LaGG-3 so the armament was progressively lightened until a standard fit was the 20mm and a single UBS. The later series 35 and 66 featured this armament (these aircraft don't appear in either the Battle of Moscow or Battle of Stalingrad games, which is a pity, as they were decent dogfighters at low altitudes; certainly better than the earlier LaGG-3's). Although the 23mm cannon could be fitted, and was a very powerful cannon, it normally wasn't used as most of the VYa-23's built were slated for the Il-2. At any rate, an excellent video and a realistically bouncy landing! That landing bounce was always a problem with the Lavochkin fighters, although it became somewhat less pronounced as the aircraft was developed into the La-5 and La-7. RedBravo65 Posted May 17, 2016 Author Posted May 17, 2016 Thanks for the info gents. What-ever it's armament, it is such a sexy looking fighter IMHO.
