ZG26 Server - What is it all about?

Just going to update on the server we have running as we are getting a few people joining under their own steam and who might not be aware what we are trying to do. Firstly this is not supposed to be a permanent alternative to the bigger DF servers...this is me testing and learning the ME and I am also very keen to fly a BOM only plane set on the Moscow map although I added the 111, Ju-87, Pe-2 Series 87 and Il2 42 so if you don't own BOM you can still fly here  The reason I am running this server is to improve on my mission design with a view to running IL2 style FB co-ops to appeal to hardcore types and it's highly unlikely that there will be respawns/refly or tanks, On the nights we dont run a co-op we may leave these DF missions running...hopefully.

 

So about the server and missions. First off I have looked through many peoples missions to learn the ME and the core structure of WOL is the one I find the simplest and easiest to understand, with Gargarin's permission I have used that part of the mission but that is probably where the similarities end other than the airfield flak which I kept as it's bloody ferocious!

 

Anyway I've finally got a few DF style missions that work pretty well. I think everything is fairly self explanatory, choose a side, your targets are somewhere in the zones you can see (they're not too hard to find). You can see icons for the locations you need to defend though. I think the target area is fairly ok and shouldn't be too far to get a fight....oh and it's full real with no icons and no kill messages.

 

There is wind and a very small amount of turbulence (0.5m/s) to 'keep it real' and there are signposts to show taxi direction and the windsocks are even pointing the right direction! Cloud is light but I will start adding more challenges as I go.

 

I do have to add that this is a server for mature and nice people who are willing to fly in a respectful way and I wont hesitate to ban people who cause trouble and that includes not using the airfields and taxiways correctly when there are other people on the airfield...there are other places where people can fly how they like

Hmmm..... Are you 100% sure that if somebody not own BoM he is still able to fly on a BoM Moscow map if you place a BoS plane set????? I read somewhere here you need to own BoM if you want to join a server with a BoM Moscow map.

I am not 100% sure but one of the French guys came in and tested, flew a IL2 42 and it was ok....I think it's because the map is in beta?

 

I'm sure when the game is released it wont be like that

But before anyone asks NO! there is no Yaks, La-5s 190s or G2s lol

 

There are some really cool matches of aircraft with this plane set, I think the F4 might be needed to be more competitive with the Mig (and the F4 was present in numbers at Moscow) but I don't want to turn it in to one of those kind of servers where everyone just flies the best aircraft....that's why co-ops will be the way forward

No problem I think our guys were tired and logged off early. I'll try and get everyone together, so far we've had a maximum of 14 people so pushing it passed 20 or 30 would be nice.

 

I will start working on a single co-op soon so we can all have a serious flight

Did it actually tell you you needed BOM because I could swear one of the French guys joined and said he didn't have it?

 

Some people do have trouble connecting at first, maybe the mission files are a bit too big? 600 kilobytes doesn't seem a lot though.

Well that does make sense because I see people join and then leave within a split second so they must be BOS only players.

Yes,it was Rugby,this French guy and I remember he told us he doesn't have BoM but as it is still early access,it is possible to fly on BoM map.

Improved the Flak at some targets as it was too weak...now you will all be sniped 15km from the target....only kidding 

 

Hopefully when a target is destroyed the target zones will now disappear...we'll test tonight

 

Added an airfield target for the VVS and a very nice one too if I might say so myself :D I'm trying to make the targets appear realistic and not just a pile of boxes and random blocks/buildings.

 

We tested attacking a spawn airfield last night...the flak is pretty lethal...probably not worth the long flight

 

Reworked some of the targets like rail yards and depots so they look a bit nicer.

 

Changed the artillery position so they look more realistic, closer to the road now and some of the guns are covered in netting

 

I might move one of the VVS AIRFIELDS [Edited] closer to the front line...I'm pondering this at the moment. Also I would like to turn one of the industrial towns like Klin in to an actual target rather than adding buildings on to the outskirts....I think that would feel very authentic.

 

Any feed back is welcome, I might not implement every suggestion though.

Just remembered something

 

I think most airfields are Taxi left but at least one which is the bottom VVS airfield ]Brykovo] is Taxi Right 

 

On all airfields if you look at the caponier's in front of you you will see yellow signs indicating the taxi direction, on some of the airfields there are further signs on the side of the taxiway to warn you off approaching bends.

A nice night I think...not too much air to air, it seems most people are ground pounding which is very cool but we got some nice engagements.

 

In Pe-2s we were bounced by an F2 and anded up chasing him away until he blew his engine and had to pancake. In the P-40s we met a 109 or two but the mission rotated and then in IL-2 41s we got hammer by flak and lost two aircraft but as I left the target area I spoted a 109 patrolling and got in to a very cool little scrap and shot him down

 

I found some bugs which I will fix tomorrow especially the new airfield target which was shooting the wrong side ....On the first mission I figured this out so I killed them so they wouldn't shoot the LW pilots taking off.

Thank you for this server! We made a couple of nice Ju 88 bombing raids with my Finnish friend last night! The map is very beautuiful and a real navigation is much more easier than in Stalingrad.

He he I always do it for some stupid reason, last time it was dive bombing in the Ju-87 with an open cockpit....Maybe I am cut out to fly the I-16 for the rest of my life :D

Done that a few times - once when flying a Bf-109 to even up the teams, I did the standard take-off procedure. Bring the aircraft to the runway with the cockpit open to see the taxiway, line up, take-off and close it. You can imagine my surprise when the airplane shook and I heard a bang

 

Couldn't be bothered to land though, so I went, strafed a column while feeling the wind on my hair, then headed back.

A friend and I did an attack run against the fuel depot in 110's and I chose to separate properly at low altitude before initiating my climb and did just fine... He chose to climb almost immediately after dropping his bombs, lost most of his speed and became a large, slow target for the AAA below.

Nice! It probably depends on what you attack, some are the earlier targets which are probably rubbish but I'm working my way around all of them to make them better. Once that's done this template is close to complete and I can move forward and make some co-ops and more DF missions The one we attacked was brutal although that was partly my faulty for navigating the squad over the flak position  I think the level of flak in that video is about right to encourage group/squad flying......what does everyone think?

It's very immersive : you have to search (not a long time !) to find the right target. (i did exactly the opposite and I found the right target after dropping all my bombs  ).

And buildings sounds great.

That even happened to us! We bombed and rocketed a village of innocent civilians and then realised we were 10Km away from the target  Luckily for them I crashed into a tree......

Took a High level bomber mission in a PE 2 37 yesterday, I noticed you got some BOS planes in the inventory. I found this server very nice and I will use it as a favorite. Thank you for your effort. I liked the navigating in winter map , hard but not as hard as BOS winter maps on long flights. Bombed the crap out of one of the Railway stations. I think I will go in right now and bomb some more

I've been tied up for the last three days and haven't made any updates to the missions but I am going to get working on that tomorrow hopefully. I need to check each target carefully now and I've got a few other ideas to work on.
