seafireliv Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 They used to in IL2. I`ve been flying and going inverted when diving in combat conditions. Had a test flight today and dived normally and the engine was fine...
[CPT]milopugdog Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 I'm pretty sure the engine should only cut out in a dive if you pull negative Gs. As for flying upside down, it will quit on you once you hold it for a few seconds.
Jade_Monkey Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 Yes, upside down it dies out after a few secs, i dont know about dives.
BeastyBaiter Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 Dives aren't a problem, the only thing that matters is G. Negative G for more than a second or two will cause it to cut out. Obviously it will start right back up once positive G is reestablished if the prop is still turning reasonably fast.
Finkeren Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 The way different forces such as negative Gs, airflow etc affect the operation of the engine is one of the things the sim models really well. Much of it is a carry-over from RoF, where they have much more serious and direct consequences for the fragile WW1 era engines.

Obviously it will start right back up once positive G is reestablished if the prop is still turning reasonably fast. In a neg. G situation the fuel flow in the carburetor should be affected immediatly, like in the hurris and Spitfires before "Miss Shillings orifice" was installed, which only fixed the problem of flooding the engine by limiting the max. fuel flow.
II./JG53Lutzow_z06z33 Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 (edited) The fuel cut off in the original il2 was way over sensitive. Edited April 9, 2016 by II./JG53Lutzow_z06z33
ShamrockOneFive Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 If you push forward too violently in the I-16 you do get engine cutoff. Or if you sustain a negative G position for more than a few seconds it happens as well. The one in the original IL-2 seemed to cut off immediately... I always had the impression that it was oversensitive as it felt like a switch. This feels more progressive as the more negative G you push the worse it gets. A little light push and I hardly notice anything.
