Campaign: pre-flight planning?

I really think that the campaign needs to be sorted in some ways. One thing I would like to see is the possibility to edit waypoints for the campaign missions pre-flight. I mean, if the plotted course takes me right over heavy FLAK emplacements I want to be able to edit the route by adding or moving waypoints. I would also like to be able to plot my course on the main map when in flight to keep track of course deviation, since I fly without the HUD or icons. This would make low visibility/night navigation more realistic. Am I the only one wanting these features and would it be possible to implement from a technical p.o.v?

I think it would be very useful, especially for bomber pilots and it would add to immersion. Something the current campaign design somewhat is lacking.

Yes, those would be usefull features. Especially the WP editing. But I think it is hard to implement in the current system because when you see the flight plan, the mission is already created.

it's been said quite a lot but you should try PWCG. you can add, edit and remove waypoints and waypoint altitude. it also has a whole slew of customization options for the campaign.

I am a little surprised by some of the stuff not in the game\sim that I would`ve thought would be in as common sense standard. For instance, if you play on fully realistic settings, you have no access to the map? Why? I can understand having no icons on the map, but we should really be able to pull up a map so we can find landmarks. That`s not full real, that`s just  making it fully hard, harder than reality.  I have had to download and print a paper map so I can view where I am and even make route changes as needed.

It would be neat if you could export the "O" map to a 2nd monitor. At least in Expert mode. It kind of breaks immersion not being able to glance at the map while looking out the window.

Would be a great feature to let us do more with the map. Take inspiration from Silent Hunter series - adding simple tools to let us measure distance, place notes/markers or even adjust waypoints (although this might be difficult thing to implement - as map icons don't necessary correlate with waypoints).

Also - another cool feature would be a pilot body with a kneeboard map where you could glance down to orient yourself without using any UI (probably would work great with VR too!).

Thankyou. If only it didn`t show me the planes on the map! Better than nothing I suppose...

Funny that you mention Silent Hunter since that was EXACTLY what I was thinking about when I wrote the original post.

I'd love to be able to plan a bomber flight in MP and arrange the waypoints before flight.  Then be able to have the navigator give me any course corrections as required, and have the bomb-aimer talk me in after I turn on the IP and commence the bomb run.

I'm all for it. Something I really like about sim flying is to plan the flight detailed on given tactical information and execute it thereafter. This is a real weak spot of BoS since its focus is almost mainly on the fast but realistic combat experience.

This is also why I don't fly bombers often in BoS although I'm a bomber guy. A lot of the fun comes from operating the plane (which is tedious without clickpit) and planning the flight (which is also not possible in BoS).

Just in case people haven't come across it, this is a very handy thing to have on a second monitor/tablet/laptop,  etc. I'm hoping Nobby'll do something similar with the BoM map.

I really shouldn't share this since the prototype isn't done yet, but I'm working on a similar tool here. There were a few features I wanted to see in Nobby's tool, so I decided to take a crack myself. It's far from done, but in the next few weeks I plan to improve the flight creation/edit flow, add all the airfields with their headings, and add icons for CAP areas and targets with notes. Crucially, I plan to keep the project open source and hope the community can work together to fill this gap in the game.

That is looking great, Gamblerr! It seems very slick and super easy to use!

Thanks for the kind words, folks! I plan to do an "official" release in the next week or two in the 3rd Part Apps subforum once the minimum viable product is done, so keep an eye out for that. Feel free to start using it now, however, and keep any feature requests or bug fixes in mind for when I open that thread! :)

One other aspect of pre-flight planning that could use a little work is that on escort missions you always seem to get allocated the same callsign as the flight you are escorting. This is unrealistic and potentially confusing. It would be much better to either be able to pick a callsign for your flight or have one allocated that is different from that of the flight you are escorting.
