Is there a list of important key commands specific to the JU-88 in order to fly properly at the Expert level without over heating and damaging an engine ? I have an interest in flying this aircraft and I would like to learn the specific key commands from those who know. Thanks everyone !

I didn't find any oil nor water radiator command, only air cool flaps.

Exactly. The controls for the air cooler flaps are on the left side, but you can see the flaps opening and closing anyway. If you fly in summer you will need to keep them somewhat open, to prevent the engines from overheating.

Also note that on approach you will need to maintain some power after extending gear and flaps, otherwise you will get too slow. 200 - 210 seems about right for the approach.

Yes I tried some landings. Full flaps extended and 200 kmh are good but need some throttle to maintain nose level. If not enough you sink fast.

I like that you can see the parameters for every plane now in the Briefingscreen

Guys...

Is there any OIL and WATER shutter settings that we need to know about in order to fly this aircraft at the Expert level ?

Nah, I've been flying it on expert with no oil or rad settings, just air cool flaps open, rpm's at 86%(ish), throttle around 78% I think, whatever gets me into the continuous range. No issues at all, haven't overheated yet. Keep in mind I'm sure that's not even close to the best settings but it works for now until someone tells me a better way.

Yes, it doesn't seem to have oil or radiator controls, the outlet shutters allowed airflow over both. I think the part at the top is the oil cooler and the others are the coolant radiators.

Thanks guys for the feedback !

The part at the top remembers me the oilcooler of the Ju87. And the Ju87s oilcooler can be closed with the flaps on the front. But I didn`t find any part in the cockpit, moving, when I hammered on the buttons for opening and closing oilradiator flaps, so it seems not to be possible for me.

Cowling cooling settings same as the LA5 and 190.unless it's changed, since I'm unable to verify.

The only controllable cooling shutters on the Ju 88 are the outlet cowl flaps.

Mastiff,

I think the 190 has no cooling settings, as far as I know it is only automatic.

BTW, in external camera i saw, there are no flaps in front of the oilcooler in game. Maybe the engine on HarryM´s picture is another version of the engine.

no matter what i assign the radiator cowl flaps to they don't seem to want to open/close any idea?

Outlet cowl like on the La-5 I think

Here's the engine management sequence I use (I have a throttle quadrant and split the engines so that I can set differential throttle and prop RPM):

  • Enter mission, engines off
  • Check cooling flaps (RCTRL -/+ on my system), leave them half open
  • Hit 0 (zero) to switch to split engines
  • Both props to full RPM
  • Both throttles to idle
  • Hit RCTRL 1, to start left engine
  • Once left engine runs, adjust left throttle to increase RPM to 900
  • Hit RCTRL 2, to start left engine
  • Once right engine runs, adjust right throttle to increase RPM to 900
  • Taxi to holding point
  • Set flaps to 25, trim, close window, check controls
  • Hit 0 (zero) to unsplit engines
  • Set cooling flaps (RCTRL + on my system) to full open
  • Hit 0 (zero) to split engines
  • Take off, raise gear, raise flaps, climb; on take off I might use differential throttle for a straight run
  • When at cruise altitude, hit 0 (zero) to unsplit engines
  • Set cooling flaps (RCTRL + on my system) to full open
  • Hit 0 (zero) to split engines

I do this because I want to set cooling flaps for both engines (I don't think it can even be done differentially), but I want to control the engines' power output differentially. I use similar sequences for the He-111 and the Bf-110.

I found this which I believe is a translated version of a original flight manual (not sure for what version):

http://www.allworldwars.com/Ju-88-Flying-Operations-Manual.html

The values and procedures etc mentioned seem to be applicable to the Il-2 BoM Ju 88 as well when I used it.

If you can read German a copy of the real flight manual is available at: http://www.deutscheluftwaffe.de/archiv/Dokumente/web/new%20site/frames2/Dokumente.htm (on the left side select 'F', then navigate to "Junkers A.G.").

Edit - Just noticed there's an English translation of this flight manual (at least the chapter on flight operations), see Luke's post at: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/21771-ju-88-finnish-pilots-notes/.

andy,

you don`t have to go to `F` for `Flugzeuge`, you can, of course, also take `J` for `Junkers Flugzeugwerke AG`.

Posted this in another thread, but here you go:

Engine settings are the same as for the Ju-87 and He-111 (all three are Jumo 211 powered):

     Start- und Notleistung                    1.40 ata       2600RPM     (1min)

(Takeoff and Emergency Power)

Steig- und Kampfleistung                    1.25 ata        2400RPM      (30min)

(Climb- and Combat Power)

Höchstzulässige Dauerleistung            1.15 ata       2250 RPM

(maximum Continous Power)
