Falco_Peregrinus Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 (edited) Hello everyone, Just today I was reading the "famous" soviet test of the also "famous" captured FW190 in Russia, and I was wondering; Are there somewhere any tests of soviet fighters carried out by the Luftwaffe during the war? They must have captured Mig-3, Yaks, Lavochkins in decent numbers and test flown them ..I have never read anything about what the Luftwaffe thought about soviet planes "back then".We always see big fights over german planes' characteristics in any game, and have seen many tests of their planes carried out by the RAF or even the VVS.But I couldn't reckon any flight test carried out officially by the Luftwaffe, apart from the very interesting book of memories of the german pilot Lerche and his opinion (very briefs) about the soviet planes he test-flew.Of course my knowledge of german and/or soviet planes is pretty limited, but I was wondering if I could find more. 216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 The Finns tested Soviet aircraft and the test results for some are available (like the LaGG-3). There probably are some Luftwaffe tests lying around, you can try to translate your search keys to German with a translator and see if you find something.
Monostripezebra Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 (edited) Well for the british and american aircraft there was the famous "Zirkus Rosarius" and even some operational use of captured planes with the KG200.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zirkus_Rosarius https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kampfgeschwader_200 So I´m pretty sure there must be some documents around for the russian planes, too. 6./ZG26_5tuka Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 It's not really performence tests but I have a book "Luftwaffe Test Pilot Flying Captured Allied aircraft in WW2" from Hans Werner Lerche. He describes his flights with german aircraft as well as allied ones, from Spitfire Mk.IX to P-47, P-51, Yak-3 and La-5FN. If you're interested hit me up per PM
Falco_Peregrinus Posted March 5, 2016 Author Posted March 5, 2016 Thanks guys.. indeed, it would be very interesting to see what the germans engineers thought about soviet warplanes.and what "numbers" were they able to gain from them whilst flying-testing the crates. TY Stuka, I have Lerche's book and it's very, very interesting. A shame that he was able to only collect the LA-5 characteristics after the war as the others went lost. But he definitely describe interesting traits in those planes.
Heliopause Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 I think at Rechlin (test centre) performance tests with captured aircraft where carried out.
