SqwkHappy Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 ..So after practicing landings in the beast that is the 109 F4 for a couple of weeks, I finally managed to get a landing so soft I couldn't notice the transition from air to ground. It was beautiful. What i've managed to gather is make sure stab is at 1, and that your sticks y-axis is well calibrated and the electronics are clean, because you need all the finesse in the last 2 seconds of landing to make it a great one. The plane likes to try and do all sorts of things as you get close and if you're not there to make the fine movement to correct it, you're gonna bounce. Still though, it was very satisfying. Wish I was recording for this first one. I highly suggest this read if you haven't already done so: http://www.eaf51.org/newweb/Documenti/Storia/Flying_%20109_ENG.pdf A big part that now stands out to me is how he says at a certain point he doesn't know the exact landing speed because he's too busy doing other things to look. This rings very much true in IL2: BoS. At some point all your energy and focus is on keeping the plane level and in a gentle glide downward.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 I was bored, can't sleep and anyway I love landings more than anything else in this sim https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujZBiCyXWRw&feature=youtu.be 2
SqwkHappy Posted March 3, 2016 Author Posted March 3, 2016 (edited) I was bored, can't sleep and anyway I love landings more than anything else in this sim Nice! I would definitely consider that a good one! I noticed a few things about your flight: 1. Your cockpit is dark but the ground is bright. I assume ultra settings on a great nvidia card with everything turned up and some kind of gamma / brightness tweak? 2. That's the same airfield I've been practicing on for the last week. Haha I know from the city next to it. 3. Ideal conditions. No wind? No turbulence? 4. Do you have trackir or are you using key binds for head movement? I couldn't be sure. 5. You like wide view FOV. I've tried it a few times but I feel disconnected. I use the default FOV because technically your vision in sim is about an 8x10 inch rectangle in real life, and default sims that well. Then I use zoom / zoom reset to mimic RL visual ability. When I set my default trackir positiion, I lean a few inches forward and hit F12. That way I can sit back and have a decent view of the pit in normal flight. Someone suggested that in RoF forums, don't remember who but it's brilliant. Person probably plays BoS as well. Thanks for the post! I loved it. Edited March 3, 2016 by [MYK]Mikeypro83
6./ZG26_Emil Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 1. Yes 0.6 gamma it looks much nicer especially on the snow map. 3 think there was some wind etc but all my landings are like that in the 109 as that was the only aircraft I flew in sims since 2001. 4. Track IR yep, I couldn't live without it 5. I think it looks much worse in a video that isn't full screen. I have a very large 2560x1600 monitor and looks fine but it looks a bit weird on Youtube. I don't use the zoom axis on TIR and tone down the side to side and up down movements a lot. I then use the keys to move the head right back and save with F10.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 I get a kick out of landing anything well, so agree you should feel good about it! There's more to flying than just shooting stuff :-) PS. Yeah right, Emil was just lucky there, he's such a 'noob' in 109s, he hasn't a clue :-P Ha ha!! By the way was it you in the La5 I crashed in to at 750 Kph the other night?
6./ZG26_Emil Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Yes, yes it was. That's what I get for trying to balance the sides eh? ;-) In fairness, your rounds were perfectly on target,... before your plane was too! Might have seen you coming had my wingman and I not being trying to read flight manuals as we flew ( so to speak) :-P I had a feeling it was you guys....lovely formation flying
-TBC-AeroAce Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 U remind me of the first days I played this game and I could not land for arse!! A bit of practice and BOOM!! 1
SqwkHappy Posted March 4, 2016 Author Posted March 4, 2016 Not anywhere near a great landing, but it's the best one out of three practices. 3 m/s wind with 1 m/s turbulence. https://youtu.be/ynJeceuusuU For some weird reason the plane kept bumping up and down on the run way until I applied a little brake and it ceased. Possible bug? Who knows.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 The bumping is due to the ground handling I think. It's quite a cool feature. Nice landing

LLv24_Zami Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Nice landing Mikey! Better than I mostly do . Nothing wrong with the very slight bumping there, just physics.

SqwkHappy Posted March 5, 2016 Author Posted March 5, 2016 (edited) I got it! So basically I came in hot. I kept my speed up so I could keep a very slow decent rate with good control. I'm not sure what my final speed was on touchdown [edit] somewhere around 148-154km/h [/edit] [edit] better video with cockpit view first and outside view second for better idea of what went down... -TBC-AeroAce Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 (edited) All I can say is on downwind I drop all flaps and gear. Trim for 200 ish and then its the easiest plane to land for me in game. Just look out to the side to judge flare height(this is actually the hardest thing for me with all BOS aircraft esp the pe2 which I always think I'm higher than I am) Edited March 5, 2016 by AeroACE
F/JG300_Gruber Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 ..Yeah. I'm used to it. It was weird that it stopped because I applied a bit of brake. Thanks. My guess would be that when applying brakes, as the tail have a tendency to raise, it softens the impact of the tailwheel on the ground and therefore reduces the bouncing.
Yogiflight Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 If you want less bouncing on the runway, you should perhaps land on Gumrak, it is a concrete runway, so much smoother. That`s, why it looked so smooth in Hans landing video with the P40, I think it was. But the landing in the second video was near to perfect, I think.

I had an even harder time doing good landings in RoF because I was unable to judge the grounds distance from my plane accurate enough. My guess would be that when applying brakes, as the tail have a tendency to raise, it softens the impact of the tailwheel on the ground and therefore reduces the bouncing. That makes sense. I don't recall ever seeing it.
CIA_Luth Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 would you mind sharing your graphic settings? your video looks incredibly beautiful.

Yogiflight Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Thanks Luke, for the video. I was looking for it, but couldn`t find it anymore. I, then, tried it with the 109 F2, and the Gumrak runway is definitely less bouncing than the other runways, when you are rolling on it.
SqwkHappy Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 Thanks LukeFF would you mind sharing your graphic settings? your video looks incredibly beautiful. Sure thing, but you may be surprised... graphics setting: Balanced resolution: 1776x1000 fullscreen: off vsync: off mgpu support: off ssao: off hdr: off (hurts my eyes sometimes) distance landscape detail: Normal FPS limit: 60 anti-aliasing: off (don't really need it) gamma correction: 0.9 The game runs about 15fps better when I'm not recording because fraps is a performance hog, so gameplay is much smoother than what you see in the video. The reason I have a lot of settings off is so I can get the best performance during landings, which is where I observed the biggest frame drops.

Concrete runways are programmed to be smoother than dirt airstrips.
