WWGeezer Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 First, is there part of the forum dedicated to Bomber advice? Second, for traditional High Altitude bombing what are the traditional altitudes ( ROF guy, so my numbers are off)? And last...regarding the modeling of AAA are you vulnerable at all altitudes, or at certain heights is the risk reduced? I have been working on a bombing practice mission with airstarts to work both on navigation and controls, accuracy with crosswinds, but wanted to start with something that is accurate I used one of the server missions and stripped it out, placing a number of airstarts around the two targets
BSS_Sniper Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 (edited) The sad part is that you are rarely going to find anyone that takes a He 111 up to altitude and use it to level bomb. Unfortunately people like to "war thunder it", take 111's since they have the largest bombs, hug the deck to target and then bomb from as low an alt as possible, die and do it all over. I wish there was a way to discourage the unrealistic use of bombers. As far as your question, I like to bomb from 3km to 4km. The AAA can still reach you but it is minimized and I normally don't take damage. Edited March 3, 2016 by BSS_Sniper
xvii-Dietrich Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 As BSS_Sniper says, there are not a lot of high-alt multiplayer bombers, but you can do whatever you want. Multiplayer missions also cycle too quickly, meaning the mission will sometimes end while you are still climbing up to altitude. Multiplayer missions also often don't provide bases way back from the front lines, which again discourages altitude bombing. I've not seen any dedicated bomber forum for BoS/BoM. The only one I've ever seen is part of Luftwaffe section of Storm of War (IL-2:Cliffs of Dover, www.stormofwar.org). I usually bomb from 5000m, and I never get hit by AAA. However, I don't fly BoS too much at the moment. But I am waiting for BoM to come out, so I can fly the Ju 88 A-4 (which is a personal favourite!). BoM will have larger maps, making these high climbs more practical.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 We find 5000m is a bit too high due to the LOD, the targets pop up a bit too late for our liking. 4000m is perfect for the He-111
F/JG300_Gruber Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 We find 5000m is a bit too high due to the LOD, the targets pop up a bit too late for our liking. 4000m is perfect for the He-111 This is also my opinion, higher than 4000m you see the target to late for any significant correction. Lower, the AAA gets nasty. I stick to 4000m as well 1
WWGeezer Posted March 6, 2016 Author Posted March 6, 2016 thanks guys....4,000 sounds good. In ROF we had a group of folks dedicated to the high flying bombing missions. In some of the ROF campaigns they put rules in place that forced you out of the dive bombing mode. Our squad tends to fly co-ops ( or a close facimile) and am trying to get back into the high altitude work. Appreciate the comments
WWGeezer Posted March 6, 2016 Author Posted March 6, 2016 PS....Yes even at high altitude the weapon mod bomb loads (sc1800) are borderline atomic. Here is a few shots from a bombing run showing the impact waves. I started off a little off target But the impact zone was pretty incredible
1CGS LukeFF Posted April 1, 2016 1CGS Posted April 1, 2016 Quick question - is there an average target altitude above sea level that you guys use on the BOS map when the actual elevation is unknown? Does it even matter much when bombing from 4,000m? Most elevations on the Stalingrad map are no more than 100 meters above sea level, so it does not make a dramatic difference.
