As for the Allison engined 'Snout' on the P-51... don't like that either. It wasn't until they stuck a Merlin in it that it became a true beauty... And the 'Malcolm hood' of course... No, no, no, it's a beauty spot, the snout is much more beautiful than the big Merlin high alt belly radiator!!! Look how slim this Mustang is! In comparison the Merlin one looks pregnant

352nd_Wheels Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 The Allison engined P-51 could have been a high altitude performer if the govt. had allowed Allison to put superchargers on the engine. The govt. got the plane it contracted for and not the one it could have had if they hadn't turned down the option to install Allison engines with a supercharger. Wheels
