=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 I happened to find a great collection of photographs taken in 1973 in Japan with last flyable Ki-84. Unfortunately for us it is no longer in such state. Few more here : http://geta-o.jp/WB/P&F/HAYATE/WB-HAYATE.html There also is a record from that event on youtube : And some original ww2 footage : 6
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted February 26, 2016 Author Posted February 26, 2016 And here is the sound of Homare engine, recording quality is not great but you can get the idea :
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted February 28, 2016 Author Posted February 28, 2016 Indeed, it retains a beautiful lines of Ki-43 but with that Homare engine and 4-bladed propeller aircraft is a bit bigger and looks a lot more powerful. It was really nice to fly in old Il-2 and was extremely tough opponent with that kind of combination of speed, maneuverability and climb rate. Hope there will be a day when 1CGS will make it here to fly.

69th_chuter Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 That was one of the favorite planes at Freeman Field, and the most reliable oddly enough.
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted May 29, 2016 Author Posted May 29, 2016 I'm curious of hearing more on the first part, what was particularly liked so that it made it on of the favorite ? On the latter one I'm not surprised. Lots of problems with Homare were not the consequence of a bad design, but lack of spare parts and skilled mechanics. If pilots could sometimes count on evacuation, then mechanics almost never. They would be given rifles and told to join their brothers in the infantry units. And experienced and skilled mechanic is as important as experienced and skilled pilot.
