Sgt_Joch Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 not IL2 related, but since his tests often come up, Eric Brown, the famous test pilot has passed away at the ripe old age of 97. RIP, sir. http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/world-s-greatest-aviator-eric-winkle-brown-dies-at-97-1-4035347 4
PatrickAWlson Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Quite a life. How many test pilots can be numbered among the greatest and actually make it to 97.
Monostripezebra Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 He made it to a great age, nothing bears testament to his flying more then that..
PatrickAWlson Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 RIP Winkle... Not really appropriate of me, but I can't help but want to put a "van" in the middle ... 1
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Another of the greats has gone up into the skies. My condolences to his family and friends, and my deepest gratitude for all his work and influence. The man was nothing short of a legend, yet Eric Brown also seemed extremely grounded and kind.
CUJO_1970 Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 oh no...! The greatest aviator has left us. Very very sad to hear this. A true legend. <S>!
Elem Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Oh my! I was so afraid that was going to happen. I am reading "Wings on my Sleeve" right now having read his other books and really enjoying it. He truly was the greatest aviator of a generation if not all time. I was due to see him at a lecture at Hatfield University this coming April and I just had a horrible suspicion that he would be taken from us before then. A fantastic man who had a fantastic life. So sad.
F/JG300_Gruber Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 A true Pilot. Away goes the man, but the legend will stay alive. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.
CUJO_1970 Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Honestly, I've not been this upset about someone I've never met dying in quite some time. I've read so much from him over the years.
Lusekofte Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 This man has flown about all luftwaffe planes and allied ones. And a fantastic man in general. RIP
Feathered_IV Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Oh no. I was just thinking about him too. Here's to a life well lived.
Gort Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 No new will ever get close to his record number of carrier landings. Done deal, he will hold the record forever. Godspeed.
Wulf Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Bugger! That's very sad. A real hero, an aviation legend and a true Scot. To me his death marks the end of an age in aviation. An amazing guy by any measure.
TheBlackPenguin Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Rest in Peace, amazing accomplishments! Its worth tracking down his numerous interviews, it seemed in one of them he revealed a soft spot for the Pe-2.
-TBC-AeroAce Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 How can we really be. Apart offff thisss
HagarTheHorrible Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 As Wulf say's, truly the end of an era. Inevitable, but very sad non the less. It sometimes strikes me as being truly ridiculous that someone that high profile could possibly still be alive, it really does seem like a different age and not something connected with , ironically, living breathing people.
taffy2jeffmorgan Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 A very good doco done by the BBC about this extraordinary man, R.I.P
Guest deleted@13284 Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 (edited) He was indeed an amazing man,the like of which we will probably never see again. I found these facts about the man, some I had no idea he had done... Flew 487 different types of aircraft, a world record that is unlikely ever to be matched Piloted 2,407 aircraft carrier landings Appointed MBE, OBE and CBE Survived 11 plane crashes and the sinking of HMS Audacity in 1941 Met Churchill and King George VI numerous times Was at the liberation of Bergen Belsen Interrogated some of the leading Nazis after the war, including Heinrich Himmler, Hermann Goering and Belsen's chief guards Josef Kramer and Irma Grese Edited February 22, 2016 by Lister_of_Smeg
Feathered_IV Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Incredible man. He was like the David Attenborough of aviation. 1
