Hi all,

Am new to BOS but not to 2ww sims as played the original IL2 a lot, off and online.

Am loving this game and am sort of gently coaxing myself in to the single player game trying to learn things via quick missions before I make dumb mistakes in the campaign.  Some things I am finding confusing though.  I am trying to learn in expert so I can get used to having to spot planes with icons off with a mind to when I go onto mp.

Ok so I get a mission, make sure it's set to long and expert and click start.  On more than one mission It seems my wingmen desert me halfway through.  I am using the orders menu to tell them to do things and all of a sudden the ability to give orders seems to just disappear.  At first I thought it was the sim recreating the unreliability of 2ww Russian radios (am learning in Lag and not flown anything else yet) but I notice mission accomplished messages coming up and others where apparently my wingies are going back to base.  Also when I do get to send an order I don't get any acknowledgement, is that normal ?

I will not be surprised if my nubness is to blame here so are there any tutorials guides that could help me out there..

I thought if your ability to give messages to your wingmen stops it means they've been shot down.

Hi Noody,

Welcome to the sim. Sometimes the logic of the AI make them RTB when they are out of ammo or had been damaged. Sometimes could be also a bug or an incorrect command.

the ai in the sp campaign will engage contacts on their own when they appear at the action point so maybe that's where they go, not sure about the radio commands though

Usually your wing won't ditch you until the action point, what I do in campaign is keep my eyes on my wingmen when I get close to the action point and then as soon as they break towards target I follow them in.

Once you've met your objective and decide to RTB you can give the order to regroup and they should link up with you and follow you home. Don't forget that you can get randomly bounced while flying to and from the action point so sometimes your wingmen will engage threats halfway.

Hope this helped, good luck!

Hi Noddy, you can give your wingmen the order "follow me and do as I do", normally they should then stay with you, exept as Peterla mentioned, when they are out of ammo or seriously dammaged.

For the radio, you should know, that you can only give messages to your wingmen, when they are not to far away from you. I don`t know how far away, but I guess it might be about five or ten kilometers.

Make sure to give them time to climb out though before telling them to follow you. If you tell them too early they might bank towards you while low on speed right after wheels up, stall and then ditch off the runway.

Ahh thx all,

Some good answers and advice.  Next mission I will be mindful of stuff here and I think it will start to make sense as I doubt very much I have discovered some glaring bugs in so short a time that no one else has already :)

My advice is to just jump straight into full expert servers its not hard and its where this sim shines.

Agree. If you're into SP, there's just nothing better than PWCG.
